To feed a larger, urban and richer population, food production must increase by 70 %. As resources used in agricultural production are limited, this has to be achieved by using them more efficiently. Global commitment to increase average productivity of the world’s major crops by 20% without using more land, water, or inputs. Crop protection protects crop yield and can increase efficiency of a system of inputs. How many inputs are needed to produce one ton of output? Water Machines Fertilizer Seeds Labor Does this improve over time? Pesticide AIs Land Monitoring System Participatory Independent data collection Auditability Transparency, sharing, integration Data collected: • Farm characteristics, crop rotations, location • Agricultural practices, use of inputs and outputs • agro-ecological and soil conditions, pest pressure, abiotic stress • Services received, profitability, customer satisfaction • Weather data (precipitation, radiation, temperatures) Resource efficiency Performance is measured over time ~20% 2014 Year Reference farms 2020 Benchmark farms Panel methods and time series analysis will be used Farmer Reports Preliminary learnings from baseline data: • Differences in adoption of optimized crop protocols • Use of Syngenta products also among control farmers • Direct customers are not (yet) more resource efficient than control farmers. Baseline data is published online under Creative Commons license A challenge is to maintain a rigorous scientific research design while also accomodating commercial realities. A limitation of this study is the small sample size at a local level. Syngenta shares data with academic researchers and students to conduct further independent research.
