ötätara Children’s Centre
Trades Academy @EIT
ötätara Children’s Centre is open from 7.45am
– 5.15pm Monday – Friday on the EIT Hawke's
Bay campus. The centre caters for children of
EIT staff and students as well as those from the
wider community.
In partnership with local schools EIT has
established a Trades Academy.
At ötätara we aim to provide a service where
children and families feel welcome and
respected.
Each child is assigned a key teacher who
takes overall responsibility for the well-being,
learning and development of the child, and is
the main point of contact for the family.
We provide a calm, natural and nurturing
environment, with plenty of opportunities for
learning and development according to each
child’s individual interests and needs.
Care moments are perceived as vital learning
opportunities. These times are unhurried,
nurturing and responsive to each child’s
emotional and developmental needs.
We perceive children as active and creative
learners, thinkers and investigators. We aim to
help them develop a passion for exploration
and learning along with the skills needed for
enquiry and research.
WINZ subsidies (based on eligibility) and 20
hours ECE are available. Bookings are essential.
Manaaki Tamariki Child
care Centre
The services of the Manaaki Tamariki Childcare
are available to all students with children. The
centre is located on the Tairäwhiti campus
opposite Te Whatukura, and is open 8am –
3.30pm throughout the year (excluding 4
weeks over the Christmas period). Bookings
are essential - EIT students will take priority
over the general public.
Chaplaincy
EIT has a team of chaplains available for all EIT
students and staff. They are mostly volunteers
and come from a wide range of faiths and
spiritualities. Chaplains provide a confidential
listening ear, with non-judgemental respect for
each person’s personal philosophy or spirituality.
Career Express
In partnership with local secondary schools,
Career Express facilitates students’ transition
from school to tertiary education and training.
It also allows students to gain credits towards
their chosen career qualification at the same
time as studying NCEA.
Successful completion of a STAR (Secondary
Tertiary Alignment Resource) or Gateway
course may reduce time and fees for students
who enrol in relevant programmes in 2015.
Our aim is to provide students with “handson” learning to encourage them to explore
their educational pathways.
Secondary school students attend one day per
week to undertake practical, hands-on training
in trades and various other programmes.
The credits they gain contribute to their NCEA
Level 2 qualification. Trades Academy places
are limited, and all enrolments need to be
directed via each student’s secondary school.
If you are interested in a place in the Academy
for 2015, please talk to your school Dean and/
or Careers Adviser.
If you are unsure of who to talk to at your
school, EIT’s Trades Academy Manager —
Paul Hursthouse can be contacted on

of the student body, advocating for student
issues, and promoting the social, cultural,
recreational and educational interests of
students on all EIT campuses. EITSA creates
a student environment that empowers
and supports all students to achieve their
educational goals and training.
EITSA provides a democratic voice for all
students at EIT by representing them through
working relationships with EIT and other outside
organisations. Students are able to express
concerns or views relating to their education
through the Students’ Association representatives
on various boards and committees. You are
encouraged to put your name forward to become
a student rep for your department (reps meet
every six weeks). After a year of service you then
become eligible to put your name forward to join
the EITSA Board at our AGM.
The Student Advocate assists students to
resolve academic grievances, Study Link
queries, enrolment issues, issues with EIT
regulations and policies, and other concerns
affecting their study at EIT. This may include
mediation, assistance with drafting appeal
applications and representation before Faculty
Academic Committees.
To help students achieve the necessary study/
life balance required to succeed EITSA provides
recreational activities. EITSA run a variety
of events throughout the student calendar
to cater for the wide range of cultures, age
groups, and interests in the student body, and
these activities help to grow campus life and
create an atmosphere where students can get
to know one another.

which includes info on promotions, discounts
and other student information.

Scholarships and grants
Scholarships and grants are another way to
help you cover fees, programme related costs
and living expenses.
Traditionally when students think 'scholarship'
many believe they need to be a high academic
achiever to qualify.
Help
with
fees,
scholarships
and grants
This is not the case in many instances. Overall,
New Zealand has a low rate of applicants
for tertiary scholarships – partly due to this
misconception.
EIT has a long list of scholarships available,
many of which don’t require high grades or a
record of academic achievement. Obviously
a certain level of criteria has to be met –
however for the financial assistance, it’s worth
investigating.
EIT subscribes to the BreakOut database,
a Funding Information Services initiative.
BreakOut contains all scholarships and grants
available within New Zealand. Visit the EIT
Hawke’s Bay campus Information Centre to
access this service.

Understanding Qualifications
Programmes and courses
A programme of study results in qualification and consists of a number of courses. Some
programmes consist of compulsory courses while others have a selection of elective courses, or a
combination of elective and compulsory courses.
Credits
A credit system is used to show the value of qualifications, programmes and courses. One credit is
equal to approximately 10 to 12 hours total learning time, with 120 credits being a standard fulltime programme. When a course has been successfully completed, the credits for that course will
be counted towards a particular qualification.
Levels
The level of a qualification indicates the depth of knowledge and complexity of skills required to
graduate. The higher the level, the more complex the concepts and skill sets. In New Zealand the
levels progress from Level 1 to Level 10.
Short Courses
These courses do not generally result in formal qualifications. The short courses that EIT offers are
listed on our website www.eit.ac.nz.
Certificate
Certificate qualifications are made up of courses between Levels 1 and 7, dictating the level of the
qualification. Programmes of study are between 12 weeks and two years, though commonly six
months or a year when studied full-time. These programmes provide a broad introduction to a subject
and may be completed as a stepping-stone toward diploma or degree study.
Diploma
Diploma qualifications are made up of courses from Levels 4 to 7 with the majority of courses
dictating the level of the qualification. Diplomas are made up of courses that total to at least 120
credits. Programmes of study to complete diploma qualifications are usually one or two years in
length when studied full-time.
bachelors Degree
Degree qualifications include courses mostly from Levels 5, 6 and 7. Bachelor degree programmes usually
take three years of full-time study and a total of 360 credits with a minimum of 72 credits at Level 7.
Bachelor degrees with honours are either a 480 credit degree or a degree with 120 credits at Level 8.
What
does
it all
mean?
EIT offers a wide range of
study for qualifications from
certificate to postgraduate.
Programmes are designed
as stepping-stones, which
gives students the option to
reach their long-term goals
by progressing through
to increasingly higher
level qualifications.
Graduate Certificate/Diploma
A graduate diploma requires a minimum of 120 credits, of which 72 credits is at Level 7 or above.
Graduate certificates require a minimum of 60 credits of which 40 credits is at Level 7 or above. This
type of programme allows a degree graduate to study further courses at the same level as their degree
but in a different or additional specialisation.
POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE/Postgraduate DIPLOMA
Postgraduate certificate and diploma study extend and deepen knowledge and skills after completing
a bachelor degree. The postgraduate diploma prepares students for independent research and
scholarships. A postgraduate certificate comprises of 60 credits at Level 8. A postgraduate diploma
requires 120 credits from Level 7 or higher, with a minimum of 72 credits at Level 8.
Masters Degree
A masters degree qualifies individuals who apply an advanced body of knowledge in a range of
contexts for research, a pathway for further learning, professional practice and/or scholarship.
The credit value varies from 120 to 240 credits depending on the type of previous bachelor degree
achievement (minimum of 180 credits for a three year bachelor degree; and, minimum of 120 credits
for bachelor degree with honours). Some industries require 240-credit masters degrees. Masters
degrees must comprise a minimum of 40 credits at Level 9 with the remainder at Level 8.

EIT STEPS UP QUALITY RESEARCH OUTPUTS
EIT has substantially developed its research culture since launching
its first degree in 1996.
Lecturers now teach 12 bachelor degrees as well as postgraduate
certificates and diplomas, an honour’s degree and four masters
degrees. Teaching at this level requires they stay current and
undertake research as part of their educational role.
EIT has an enviable reputation for its range of applied qualifications.
Building on this, it continues to attract external research contracts
for applied projects that make a difference across a wide range of
services and industries, both locally and nationally.
EIT ranks second of nine medium-sized institutes of technology
and polytechnics in the Tertiary Education Commission’s 2012
interim report evaluating research excellence for the Government’s
Performance-Based Research Fund. From across all faculties, the
number of EIT staff recognised as producing quality research
increased from 10 in 2006 to 34 in 2012.
This increase will boost EIT research funding up to 2018.
“The TEC evaluation clearly indicates our higher qualifications are
underpinned by quality research,” concludes EIT Research Director
Professor Bob Marshall.

Mäori Studies
“Piki ake, kake ake i te toi huarewa, te ara o Täwhaki, i piki ai ki runga”
The need to learn and speak the Mäori language is greater than ever before.
The need to learn and speak the Mäori language grows increasingly important as the number of
native speakers dwindles with the passing of the older generations.
Young Mäori are now realising they are the kaumätua of tomorrow and that the survival of the
language is very important to fulfil their cultural needs. Furthermore, as the Mäori language
has become more available through kóhanga reo, primary schools and Kura Kaupapa Mäori,
parents have become more conscious of the need to keep up with their children’s knowledge of
te reo Mäori.
There are also vocational reasons for learning the Mäori language. Many employers now
prefer bilingual and bicultural employees, especially since te reo Mäori became an official
language of New Zealand.
Te reo Mäori is a special taonga, a gift to be shared with all New Zealanders.
EIT offers a range of programmes in Mäori studies, helping create the leaders of the future.
What you will study
Our te reo studies cover everything from basic introductory level through to a specialised degree
programme. In addition you will become proficient in Mäori customs, culture and research.
Job and career opportunities
Graduates can pursue a professional career in a variety of fields such as government
departments, hospital boards, teaching (kóhanga, primary to secondary, tertiary), working with
local Iwi (liaison, policy advisor), television/radio (reporter, scriptwriter, announcer, bilingual
researcher).
Graduates can also take on key roles at their own marae and within their whänau, hapü, iwi.
Graduates can gain entry to the one year, full-time Bachelor of Arts Honours (Mäori) programme
or look to master’s studies.
Te Üranga Waka, EIT Hawke's Bay
The marae complex, Te Ara o Täwhaki, and surrounding buildings is primarily a teaching facility

Toihoukura
He toi whakairo, he mana tangata!
Where there is artistic excellence, there is human dignity!
From its early accommodation in what was affectionately dubbed “The Barn”
in 1992, Toihoukura now runs its contemporary Mäori visual art programmes
from world class premises as part of EIT’s Tairäwhiti campus.
In 2013, Toihoukura celebrated 20 years as a specialist school of
contemporary Mäori visual arts. Its history as a conduit to global
contemporary indigenous arts has been one of great importance to the
Tairäwhiti community, and students from all over Aotearoa/New Zealand.
The school is currently headed by Professor Derek Lardelli (tä moko/multi-media) and Associate
Professor Steve Gibbs (painting), who along with Christina Hurihia Wirihana (mahi raranga),
and Erena Koopu (painting) round off the artistic tutorial team. Ruth Smith delivers Toi Reo (Art
Language – te reo Mäori). All teaching staff are considered exponents within their respective fields,
and as such, attract ongoing support from fellow renowned artists and art organisations.
Both Derek and Steve have been the driving force behind what the school has become, opening its
door to students and audiences locally, nationally and internationally. In 20 plus years, Toihoukura
has seen graduates progress into careers such as art teachers, practicing self-employed artists,
cultural advisors and gallery curators amidst an array of many other creative industry pathways.
Philosophy
The focus of Toihoukura is to ensure the continuing development of art forms that are specifically
Mäori. This is promoted through the development of, and participation in an arts ‘wänanga’
learning environment that encourages the personal and professional development of every
student.
The kaupapa of the programmes delivered within the department have been developed in direct
response to the continuing need to strengthen Mäori art within a contemporary Mäori context.
Cultural concepts and technical knowledge acquired through practical work and experience is
analysed through wänanga learning. Students are empowered to develop their own direction,
vision and independence with regard to cultural expectations and conditions. Ongoing exploration
of traditional elements in Mäori art and design ensures that students will develop a strong sense of
imagery related to their own ancestral whakapapa (genealogy).
