Tree Protection
E very effort sllall be made by the Owner to preserve and
protect all existing major [fees and newly planted trees
on me borne site. Where possible, the Owner is
responsible for conslIUcting retaining walls, construction
baniers. or similar appropriate efforts in order to ensure
the survivability of maj:or trees on the building site.
Major trees are identified in FIGURE I, and are to be
located on all site plans submitted for review by the
ARC.

To the fullest extent possible, SQiJ shall not be
excavated, spread, soiled or otherwise disposed of
within the drip line of trees.

FIGURE 3
FIGURE 1
Appropriate procedures consistent with the best practices
of tree preservation must be employed at each site. All
existing or newly planted trees locared on a bome site 01"
within the street riglu·of-way will also require protection
from site construction. All ex.isting grades
sbail be maintained fOT these trees in order to ensure and
preserve positive drainage by ilie employment of
acceptable preservation practices. The Owner is
u.l.thna.tely responSIble for the protection of all trees
throughQ\lt any construction process.
The fonowing procedures are considered appropriate to
ensure the survival and good bealth of existing trees:
.
•
.
Protective fences or barricades shall be placed
around the drip line of trees to prevent soil
compaction and mechanical damage. Placement
ilould be at drip line of tree as shown in FIGURE 2-
'possible.
52
1.1
Preservation of Existing Vegetation
The Owner is to make every etlon to preserve all
existing vegetation on its own lot wherever possible.
The intent is to preserve the natural integrity and
character of the borne site and to observe regulatory
requirements. Disturbance of naroral vegetation on a lot
may be subject to specific approval by the St John's
Water Management District (SJWMD) and/or the
Florida Department of Environmental Protection
Other existing vegetation preservation alternatives are
as follows:
•
Trees left in cLusters with existing understory
increases a tree's chance for survival because the
root system will be less affected as shown in
FIGURE 4.
•
Removal of understory is not practical or desirable
because of the probability of tree root damage.
Creating planting beds under tree group canopies is
beneficial because it maintains a more natural look.
