Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)
What is a CFL?
It’s a Compact Fluorescent Lamp, which is a small fluorescent light bulb.
Why should I use CFLs?
Replacing traditional light bulbs with CFLs is one of the easiest changes you can
make to reduce energy use around your house. CFLs use up to 75% LESS energy
than a traditional incandescent bulb. While CFLs may cost a bit more, they can save
you money by reducing your energy usage, and therefore your energy bills. CFLs
last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. They will also reduce the
amount of greenhouse gas emissions which can help to reduce global warming.
Where can I use CFLs?
If you’re going to replace just one or two bulbs, choose lamps or fixtures that you
use for a substantial amount of time each day. It will probably be in one of the
following rooms: family or living room, kitchen, bedroom or outdoors. This will give
you the greatest energy savings.
Is there just one kind of CFL bulb?
CFLs come in different shapes and sizes to accommodate your needs, whether it’s
for a table lamp, wall sconce, outdoor flood light, ceiling fan or track lighting. Be
sure to read the packaging, since only certain CFLs are designed for dimmable,
3-way or recessed fixtures.
What about wattage?
The labels on CFLs include information to make
it easy to choose the best bulb. A common
term is “60 Watt Replacement”. See the
Incandescent-to-CFL Rating Chart.
Can I throw old CFLs into the trash?
No. CFLs contain trace amounts of mercury that
make them energy efficient. For this reason, the
State of California does not permit the disposal
of CFLs in the trash. The Environmental
Protection Agency recommends that you take
old bulbs in a sealed plastic bag to a local
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection
center. Call 714-834-6752 to find the closest
HHW collection center.

of light as your current incandescent light bulbs, consult the following chart.

For example, a 14 watt CFL uses 1/4th the amount of energy of a 60 watt
incandescent bulb, yet provides the same amount of light.
To clean up a broken CFL, sweep up - don’t
vacuum - all of the glass fragments and fine
particles. Put everything into a plastic bag and wipe the area with a damp paper towel to pick up any remaining residue. Add the towel
to the plastic bag, seal and take to an HHW collection center near you. You can also open a window to ventilate the room. You should
not handle a broken CFL bulb with your bare hands - always use rubber gloves.
