MS Pre-Algebra A www.AdvancedAcademics.com Course Description MS Pre-Algebra A is the first of two courses designed to prepare the student for more advanced work in Algebra I. The basic concepts of arithmetic and the practical applications of mathematics are used to focus on integers, equations and inequalities, factors and exponents, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, and percents. The course offers graphics, explanations, and practice exercises before formative assessments. Course Objectives When you finish this course, you will be able to: Perform basic functions involving integers Solve equations and application problems using basic functions Factor integers Simplify fractions Solve expressions involving exponents or rational numbers Use ratios and proportions to solve problems Course Assignment Values Assignment Type Points Possible Weight 15 Assignments 75 pts 40% 2 Discussions 10 pts 5% 6 Unit Tests 60 pts 32% 1 Midterm Exam 18 pts 10% 1 Final Exam 25 pts 13% 188 pts 100% COURSE TOTALS Suggested Course Schedule The suggested time frame shown below is based on learning sessions. A learning session is a 45-minute period of time. This course should take approximately 90 learning sessions to complete, but this schedule is just a suggestion. You may work on each unit at your own pace, completing as many learning sessions as you’d like in one sitting. However, keep in mind that you must finish the entire course within the time specified by your school district. ©2012 Advanced Academics, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Learning Session 1 - 15 16 - 30 31 - 40 41 - 45 46 - 55 Content Covered Unit 1: Expressions and Integers Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to identify numerical and variable expressions, identify and use powers, evaluate expressions using order of operations, compare and order integers, find opposites of integers, find absolute values of integers, perform basic operations on integers, and identify and graph points on the coordinate plane. You will also learn the sets which make up the real numbers and be able to identify which sets specific numbers belong to. You will also learn to recognize repeating decimals and the fractions they equal when doing computations on a scientific calculator. In this unit, there will be: 4 Assignments 20 pts 1 Unit Test 10 pts Unit 2: Equations and Inequalities In this unit, you will learn to identify properties of addition and multiplication, use the distributive property, solve equations by adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing, write sentences as equations, and write and solve equations from application problems. In this unit, there will be: 3 Assignments 15 pts 1 Unit Test 10 pts Unit 3: Decimals In this unit, you will compare decimals using inequality symbols, round decimals, perform arithmetic operations with decimals, calculate unit cost, and convert units of measure within the metric system. In this unit, there will be: 2 Assignments 10 pts 1 Unit Test 10 pts MS Pre-Algebra A Midterm Exam 18 pts Unit 4: Factors and Exponents In this unit, you will find factors for given numbers, write expressions as exponents, factor composite numbers, find the greatest common factor of two or more numbers, simplify fractions, multiply and divide expressions with exponents, evaluate expressions with negative and zero exponents, and perform operations using scientific notation. ©2012 Advanced Academics, Inc.
