What appealed to you about
Northumbria?
What appealed to you about the course at Northumbria?
I was attracted to the Keith B. Taylor
Global Scholars Programme – a joint
partnership between St. George’s
University and Northumbria University.
This course takes me closer to finally be able to practice medicine, and that
is my ultimate goal. Spending time at Northumbria and St. George’s gave
me the chance to experience something new away from my comfort zone.
I wanted to challenge myself and now I’m here I know I made the right decision.
Northumbria is a great place to challenge yourself, and the University is based
in such a beautiful city. Who could resist?
What was it about the course that
particularly appealed?
How did you feel when you arrived?
The programme is designed to help
students practise in developing
countries by giving a one-year medical
education at Northumbria University.
Newcastle is a dynamic city with a
multi-cultural population.
How did you feel during your first
week at Northumbria?
The first week at Northumbria was fun,
exciting and a little bit overwhelming.
The university sponsored a tour of
Newcastle (the coast, museums, etc) with an afternoon British tea. There were a lot
of information seminars about the University services and the sports facilities available
on campus.
What do you like most about the course?
The one on one interaction with professors from Northumbria University and St. Georges
University and teaching assistants, and the experience with different cultures including
lifestyles and food.
What do you like/dislike about Newcastle?
The local people are really nice. Newcastle is a great place to explore with beautiful bridges,
great nightlife and of course the hardcore Newcastle United fans. There are great transit
systems with cheap access to different cities all over Europe.
I was a bit homesick at first, but everyone was so friendly and helpful that it
really helped to calm my nerves and before I knew it I had new friends and
was so comfortable that I forgot
to be homesick.
What has the course been like so far?
The course takes a lot of time, effort
and dedication, but all of that is much
easier to do if you enjoy it, or at least
learn to enjoy it. There are great
people and facilities here at
Northumbria to help every student
earn the best possible grade.
Do you have any advice for anyone
applying for this course?
Northumbria University is a great
place to study. The partnership with
St. George’s University has enormous
potential for the students enrolled on
the course. Before you choose a
course make sure it is something
you will enjoy. It is really hard to
stay motivated in a course that
isn’t enjoyable. Good luck!
What three words would you use to describe your time at Northumbria?
Beautiful, lively and diverse.

Tarek Dahrouj
What appealed to you about Northumbria University?
I am originally from Lebanon (Middle East) and Colombia (Latin America).
St. George’s University offers students an option of studying the first year of
Medicine in Newcastle UK. This way, students have the chance to learn the
English culture and experience living in the UK.
What was it about the course that particularly appealed?
I have chosen this course because I am willing to give it all my time to learn
every little aspect that could later help me in helping people as a successful
doctor. This is what I want in life and Medicine being intriguing just pushed me
further to work even harder and gain as much information as I can.
How do you get on with your tutors?
The professors are highly educated and students get a lot of help and care from
the professors and all the School staff. They do a great job at making students’
learning as easy and smooth a process as possible.
What do you do when you’re
not studying?
It is very important to be healthy
and therefore I go to the gym for
two hours three to four times a
week. Newcastle is full of clubs and
pubs and restaurants and therefore
it is really nice to dine out or hit the
clubs in Newcastle at the weekends.
There is also a movie theatre in
which one can choose from more
than 10 movies to enjoy.
Do you have any advice for anyone
applying for your course, or for
university in general?
My advice would be to study hard
every day so that weekends can
be fun!
