Ray says: We have just returned from a magical 21 day trip through Morocco with 20 friends. This photo was taken just before we set off on a two-hour camel ride into the Sahara Desert to camp overnight in Nomad tents. Our Tour Guide, Lhoucine, is holding a copy of The Bush Telegraph with Liz, who is waiting for her camel to be selected. Seeing the sunset and sunrise over the dunes of the Sahara was amazing. NRL Ambassador Nathan Hindmarsh (former NRL player who played for Australia, the NSW Blues and the Eels – pictured below right with two young fans) joined the local schools’ event at Taran’s invitation. “As an NRL Ambassador I am proud to be here today showing our support for the Day for Daniel and the local schools who are raising awareness through the 2015 Colour Trek about safety for kids as well as raising funds for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation,” said Nathan Hindmarsh. “I was very happy to accept Taran’s invitation to come to Berowra and be a part of what is going to be a very successful day.” The long procession of walkers ambled towards Warrina Street Oval Berowra Heights via Berowra Christian School where the colour was GREEN, then on to Berowra Public School for a liberal dousing of purple and yellow (!) before walking down to Warrina Street Oval where students were sprinkled in red and blue! Taran said, “At Warrina Street Oval there were some great raffles from many organisations who supported the ‘Day for Daniel’ initiative.” In addition, Berowra Christian School’s P&F donated 10% of their recent Pet Show proceeds ($700) to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation (see photo below left). If Bush Tele readers would like to donate, the Fundraising page is: http://makingadifference. gofundraise.com.au/page/ berowraschools “Thanks to Taran Jones from BPS for organising the day and to the students who made the day a success!” Objectives of Day for Daniel: • To raise awareness about child safety and protection and to promote a safer community for children. • To educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to Recognise, React and Report. • To provide FREE safety and educational material. • To honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe. • To have over 1 million people Australia wide to participate in Day for Daniel. Day for Daniel is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not acceptable in modern Australia. Born in 1851, he had commenced his working life as a journalist and soon found himself the editor of the “Mudgee Independent”. William later worked for Loneragans, a company founded in Mudgee that operated several department stores. William worked for East St Leonards Council prior to moving to North Sydney Council. Whilst working for North Sydney Council he was noted for his frugality, paying attention to the basics and the efficiency of the council under his management. The author Michael Jones noted in his book “History of North Sydney 1788-1988” that “With a business person’s approach to government, he kept municipal expenses to a minimum. North Sydney with only 6 per cent of income spent on administration was one of the most efficient, according to the 1913 Royal Commission on Greater Sydney”. Possibly to find relief from his busy role, William took his leisure in Berowra, owning a house in Goodwyn Road and five acres of land on Yallambee Road. How often he resided in the suburb is not known, however former Berowra resident Bill Wall mentioned the ownership of the house and land when he wrote a short history of Berowra for Mick Joffe’s book “Yarns & Photos”. Bill Wall also mentioned seven children by name, two of whom (Reginald William Smith and Walter Barnett Smith) are the subject of this story. William and his wife Susannah had nine children between 1874 and 1899, five of whom were sons. Reginald was born in 1888 and Walter in 1895. These two sons would serve during the First World War and are named upon Berowra’s War Memorial (left). Walter was the first son to enlist, signing up with the 117th Howitzer Brigade on the 1st February 1916. Walter was 22years old at the time, single and trained as a surveyor. He had been educated at Fort Street High School and had militia experience serving with the 18th Infantry Regiment. Walter’s occupation as a surveyor involved familiarity with measurements and mathematics so it is not surprising that he joined the artillery and was sent to officer training at the “The Family Affair Catering 4 Curry Masters factory outlet is now open to the public every Friday from 10am to 2pm Quality catering for all occasions. The Australian Field Artillery had established headquarters at an estate in Marrickville which had been previously owned by a prominent Sydney businessman named Thomas Holt. It is believed that at some point Holt raised rabbits commercially on the property, hence the name “The Warren”. “The Warren” was used to train the artillery reinforcements prior to sending them overseas. Walter spent many months there before being appointed as a Second Lieutenant with the 117th Howitzer Battery on the 1st September 1916. At the end of September 1916 he embarked aboard the HMAT A60 ‘Aenas’ bound for England. Walter arrived in England on the 19th November 1916 and spent time at the ordnance school at Woolwich before proceeding to France on the 19th April 1917. The 117th Howitzer Battery had been disbanded on the 3rd March 1917 and once in France Walter found himself attached to the 3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade on the 6th May 1917. Walter’s service records do not provide a clear picture of his service, however he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1st August 1917 and later during 1918 he attended the Australian Corps Gas School and Lewis Gun School. Walter served through till the armistice without incident and early in 1919 took the opportunity to further his surveying skills by attending the AIF Survey School in Southampton for the period starting on the 27th February 1919 through till 30th June 1919. This was classed as a non-military employment which served the function of keeping a serviceman’s mind occupied whilst awaiting for a CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT Suites 20-21 The Madison 25-29 Hunter St HORNSBY MGA return voyage as well as adding to and refreshing their civilian skills. When Walter did return to Australia later in 1919 he was accompanied by Miss Edna Copp whom I suspect he may have met in England. They were later married at St Leonards in 1920 and gave birth to a daughter in 1923. Walter followed his father’s career path and soon found employment as the Shire Engineer for Colo Shire Council. Walter was later to serve for many years as the Town Planner of Bowral Council. Echoing the praise given to his father’s contribution to North Sydney Council, the Mayor of Bowral noted at the conclusion of the final meeting of Bowral Town Planning Committee in July 1948 that “Mr. Barnett Smith had carried out his work in a particularly thorough manner, and had accepted the many criticisms of the plan without protest. The committee owed a debt to him for his thoroughness”. Walter passed away in 1949 aged fifty five years. Part II will be published in next week’s Bush Tele. These modernisations required upgrading the classroom furniture, identifying a funding gap, which needs to be bridged by parent fundraising. Two local parents have already helped bridge that gap. Real estate agent Francesca Parrino of McGrath Ku-ring-gai Council Mayor, Cheryl Szatow (pictured), has welcomed the findings of an Upper House inquiry critical of the Baird Government’s merger proposals for councils. The inquiry has made 17 recommendations and 9 findings based on several months’ consultation and public hearings involving local communities, councils and other stakeholders. The findings were announced on 29 October. The inquiry found that the Baird Government’s benchmarks used to assess whether councils were ‘fit for the future’ were unreliable. The inquiry also criticised what it called a ‘rushed and flawed’ reform process which focused too heavily on council mergers. Mayor Cheryl Szatow welcomed has a personal attachment to the school and parish community as a former St Bernard’s parent, and upon being approached for suggestions, generously donated funds. Francesca’s donation of $4,000 will be split between a contribution to the “furniture fund”, and a $2,000 travel voucher, which is first prize of the St Bernard’s Community Fete raffle, and provided at cost by parent, Michelle Desmarchelier from TravelManagers. Photo: St Bernard’s principal Cheryl Walsh, Francesca Parrino and St Bernard’s students. the inquiry’s findings, saying that it vindicated Ku-ring-gai Council’s opposition to a merger with Hornsby. “We are in excellent shape financially, delivering quality services and meeting the needs of residents, now and in the future. One has to ask what the Baird Government’s real agenda is if a council such as ours is being tossed aside.” “Ku-ring-gai ratepayers face rates increases, loss of representation and reduced service levels if a merger with Hornsby goes ahead.” “As Mayor I cannot support the Baird Government on this issue. I would be letting down ratepayers if I did not oppose this on their behalf.” She urged local residents who were not in favour of the proposed merger between Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby to express their view to their local state members Alastir Henskens and Jonathan O’Dea. It was let down by IGA’s daggy image and by Berowra Heights being too small to support two supermarkets. Another supermarket operator will suffer the same fate unless it’s sufficiently differentiated to draw in customers from beyond the suburb (as Aldi does at Mount Kuring-gai). A large, speciality retailer with no local presence or local competition (think Super Cheap Autos or Spotlight) would be a welcome replacement but to be successful would require out-of-suburb customers. Given Berowra Heights’ location, they are unlikely to be attracted. Without the attraction of a speciality retailer, the centre is doomed as a retail hub. How long it survives will be determined by the time remaining on the existing leases between operators and the centre’s owner. If the owner were to buy out the leases the site could be redeveloped for further housing. Alternatively, our councillors could put some effort into pressurising Hornsby Council to purchase the site as the location for a pool (after all, they have our money to fund that purchase) and find a business partner to build and operate the pool as a commercial venture; that being the only public pool Berowra is ever going to see. I know which option I’d like. Henry Gillard, received online Dear Bush Tele, Re future use of the IGA Berowra site (TBTW 22-10-15) More shops we do not need – just look at the new but vacant ones nearby. But what better place for Berowra’s long-awaited aquatic and fitness centre? Come on, Hornsby Shire Councillors – give it the thumbs up! Barry Beattie, Berowra Dear Bush Tele, So sad to hear that IGA is not reopening. I would love to see a Harris Farm Market there – great position, easy parking, fantastic fruit and vegetable chain. Maria, received online Dear Bush Tele, When the units were being built behind Berowra Hardware they had a flyer on their front desk protesting with outrage the ugly and inappropriate development about to happen. It was always a point of discussion. The irony of it all. Berowra needs more retail shops to service its already over populated suburb – we don’t need more housing. Keep the site for retail shopping. Aldi would be welcome here or at the IGA site. Natalie Jeffers, local Berowra Heights resident and Director of Absolute Luxury Travel, sailed aboard the QM2 last year and has defined the experience as extraordinary. Enjoy her report of last year’s coastal voyage: “I have just cruised aboard Queen Mary 2 and what an experience! Big ship luxury and high-tech, with a golden era feel. British and very elegant, the QM2 has contemporary styling.” Highlights: • Afternoon tea – A British tradition, yet culinary experience • Cocktails and canapés in the Commodore Club, a large observation lounge with magnificent ocean views • Delicious dining menus designed by Cunard’s Culinary Ambassador, Jean-Marie Zimmermannch • Black and White Ball in the Queen’s Room – imagine a big band playing songs of yesteryear and couples waltzing as they did in the dance halls whilst courting their young partner all those years ago • Trivia or darts in the Golden Lion Pub • The Library is a stunning twodeck-high wood-panelled 6,000book facility with two full-time librarians and a separate bookshop sells maritime-related books, memorabilia, maps and stationery • Canyon Ranch SpaClub. “The food was excellent and the White Star Service impeccable.” Cunard is legendary. Why do they do that? Don’t they know that this is how you are meant to do it?” We often have very important conversations about very important things in our house and this was one of them. It would seem that someone (only two people use this bathroom and my wife was the one asking the questions…) had left the toothpaste crushed and mashed from the middle when it should have been carefully squeezed from the bottom and left nice and flat. Several members of the family weighed in and the consensus was that the offender had done the wrong thing and had left behind an issue for others…part of me wanted to go through the house and squeeze every tube I could find but the reasonable part of me took it ‘on board’ and gave it a little more thought. When you step onto a boat and cross a patch of water as you look behind you will see a ‘wake’. The larger the boat the larger the wake; the faster the boat the larger the wake. When you see the footage on television following a cyclone or a tornado they try to show you aerial photos of the path of destruction that the storm has left behind. We hear a lot about the environmental impact we make upon our world – each individual leaving a ‘footprint’ and most of the time it is a negative impact that is portrayed. Have you ever considered what you are leaving behind in your ‘wake’? Are you frustrating others by the heinous misuse of toothpaste tubes? Are you leaving a path of destruction in relationships or interactions you have with others? Are you causing ripples which add excitement, or waves that make people uneasy? Psalm 23:6 gives a great promise to those who will follow the Lord “surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life”. Usually people see this as a promise of good things coming their way but what if it also means that in our ‘wakes’ we could leave behind these awesome gifts for others? I have always wanted my life to count for something and just maybe this is a way I can make it happen. The more closely I follow Jesus the more good things will follow after me. So my question to you today is “what is in your wake?” A local northern Sydney mothers group, Smiles2U, have been undertaking a toy drive for the Children’s Ward at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital. They have had an overwhelming response, with enough donations to fill an entire treasure chest. The group delivered the toys on Friday, 23 October. Many children undergo painful procedures while in hospital and a surprise treat from the treasure chest will help turn their visit into a positive experience. All toys are new and the children get to keep the toys. The chest was made and donated by a local men’s shed (pictured below). The Children’s Ward, Nurse Unit Manager, Louise Robinson, was overwhelmed with the generosity. “These donations will make the hospital stay for some children that bit easier. Our treasure chest was almost empty until Smiles2U coordinated the toy drive.” Manager Fundraising and Volunteers, Hornsby Liesl McGrath said: “As a hospital, we are very appreciative of the donations from the community. We thank each and every person who has contributed.” Rachel is from ‘North Shore Mums’: www.northshoremums.com.au/about The two Michelles are from Smiles2U. They live in Willoughby (Michelle Barry – 0421 135 719) and Killara (Michelle Key). In A Nutshell by Jason Gower, Principal Paul Jones Real Estate When prospecting for properties to sell over the past quarter of a century of being a real estate agent, I wish I had been given a dollar for every time I heard the phrase, “ No, you’ll be taking me out in a pine box”. I always reply politely with, “and I hope that is not soon!” The fact is that there are a number of our ‘aging’ population who simply want to stay in their local area, a place they are familiar with, close to a network of friends Thursday 5th November 2015 and facilities but in a new home that is purpose-built to help them maintain a lifestyle in their senior years. It is with this in mind that we must think about our ‘over 55’s’ (and that’s NOT old). Where do they go in their retirement years when they find it increasingly difficult to maintain the great Aussie dream home that sheltered their kids, giving them a yard to play in and as for those now painful stairs? Why is it then, that there is a very vocal and naïve crowd in Berowra (and elsewhere) that is hell-bent on making it difficult for any development suitable for our aging but still spritely and not infirmed residents? When ‘Athenry’ (Berowra Waters Road) over 55’s (SEPP 5) was built and sold, some 10 years ago, there was a huge uproar. Now there is a waiting list for when one comes up for sale. As for ‘the Great Wall of Berowra’ (Turner Road Berowra Heights), it was the protesting (anti-development) few that damned prior, aesthetically pleasing designs, and look what you got! Why is it then that the same vocal group of ‘locals’, along with some new recruits, are so anti the proposed development on the Berowra Hardware site? Something that I know senior locals will buy so as to continue enjoying the wonderful Berowra community that we have grown to love. Sure, it is everyone’s right to have an opinion but don’t let this one be another victim of ‘death by Facebook’! Do your homework, look at your future and the future of others, then have a good hard think about the concept and give positive feedback before lashing out in the negative like an angry lynch mob! Because I know how people think, I will add that I have no association with this development, have had no communication with the proposer over this development before writing this article, nor been employed to benefit from the future sales of this site. If I am asked to submit a proposal, I would be honoured to do so. Until next time. Take care! GETTING PRE-APPROVAL WILL HELP YOU SECURE A PROPERTY Buying a house is a very exciting time, and it’s difficult for most home buyers to stop themselves from jumping right in and looking at property. However, getting pre-approved for a mortgage is one of the most important things to do when beginning your home search. It is only natural to want to start looking at houses immediately, but if you get pre-approval first, the remainder of the process will be much simpler. Below I have listed five reasons why you should get pre-approval before you start house hunting. YOU’LL BECOME REALISTIC Falling in love with a home that exceeds your price range can be upsetting, so avoid this by obtaining pre-approval before you begin. IT SAVES TIME While it’s fun to search listings and attend inspections, it can also be wasteful of your time to be looking at properties you might not be able to afford. IT MAKES YOU A SERIOUS PLAYER When it comes time to make an offer on a property, you will be taken much more seriously in the eyes of a vendor if you have pre-approval. In fact, your offer may be more attractive because the sellers will know you’ve already secured a mortgage. YOU’LL REDUCE YOUR RISK If you enter into a contract on a property without pre-approval you could be placing yourself at risk. Firstly, getting a mortgage approval may take time and it may push back your ability to close if you don’t already have pre-approval. Secondly, if you fail to get approved for a mortgage after entering into a sales contract you may end up losing the deposit you gave. IT SPEEDS UP THE PROCESS Having pre-approval before entering into a sales contract will make the process much more streamlined and you will be able to close the deal without delay. Thursday 5 November 2015 11 New-build Home Sales Drift Lower The HIA New Home Sales Report, a survey of Australia’s largest volume builders, showed monthly new home sales declined by 4.0 per cent in September 2015, with the level of activity down from the April peak by 5.2 per cent. “The decline in total new home sales was reflected in both the detached and non-detached segments of the market in September 2015,” said HIA economist, Diwa Hopkins. “Following the peak level of sales that occurred in April this year, sales activity has trended lower only very modestly. This augers well for actual new home building activity in 2015/16. “A fresh record level of building activity during this financial year could have been achieved – and could have been of strong benefit to the broader domestic economy – but increasingly restrictive credit conditions are likely to curtail the boom in new home building.” “The deterioration in credit conditions is likely to weigh more heavily on new home building activity beyond 2015/16. We have therefore pared back our forecasts for activity over our forecast horizon beyond the end of the current financial year.” In the month of September 2015 detached house sales declined in four out of the five the mainland states. Detached house sales declined by 19.8 per cent South Australia, 8.6 per cent in Western Australia, 5.9 per cent in Queensland and 0.5 per cent in New South Wales. In Victoria, detached house sales increased by 3.1 per cent. REAL ESTATE Bush Tele’s latest feature Local REAL ESTATE NEWS will connect your business where it matters ... with the local audience. Since 1999, Brooklyn Community Theatre has performed a one-nightonly event and has become a hugely popular evening for locals and visitors alike. Artistic Director Peter Hughes believes there are many reasons for its ongoing success. “You arrive at the park to be greeted by an amazing stage and background music. There is a sense of excitement amongst the audience who sip on their favourite drink or dine on delicious food. As night arrives, it takes on a whole new ambience and suddenly the stage lights up and you are treated to a hilarious play, performed by actors who you may even know. The show is always high quality, with the focus on fun. It truly is a magical evening.” Saturday 14 November 2015. Gates open and great food from 6.30pm – Curtains up 8.30pm.
