A
letter from the President
The Cayuga County Community College Foundation, Inc.
Dear Friends of the CCC Foundation,
The past few years have been full of activity at the Cayuga
Community College Foundation. We have undertaken
some of the largest and most ambitious projects in our
history of supporting the College, our alumni and
especially our students. I am pleased to tell you our story
in this year’s Annual Report.
Although I graduated from the College several years ago,
Cayuga still impacts my life on a daily basis. The lessons I
learned from my faculty and mentors continues to guide
my life, both at work and at home. In addition, I interact
with ACC/CCC grads on a daily basis throughout the
community. The professionalism of my fellow alumni—be they teachers, attorneys, police
officers, business owners, nurses or those from other walks of life—convinces me daily of
the quality of a Cayuga education. We should be very proud of the thousands of alumni
who touch our lives every day.
Your support of the Cayuga Community College Foundation has helped make these
alumni who they are today. Your gifts are also transforming the lives of thousands of CCC
students—future alumni who will make Cayuga and Oswego Counties (and other places)
better for all of us.
As we help to move the College forward, the CCC Foundation will continue to rely upon
the engagement of you, our friends and donors. On behalf of the Foundation’s Board of
Directors, I personally offer you my sincere gratitude for your tremendous support of the
Cayuga Community College Foundation and invite you to journey with us as we plan for
the future.

S
upport to the College
The Foundation provides support to the College in two forms: 1) scholarships, awards and grants to students and
2) support for academic and other College and community programs. The Foundation had another good year receiving
gifts and grants from many generous individuals, foundations and organizations.
Support to Students
In the past year, the Foundation received funds to create two endowed scholarships:
The Peter B. Buxbaum Memorial Scholarship was created by Barbara Buxbaum in memory of her son. This will be awarded to
a returning sophomore with preference given to a graduate of Auburn High School. She/he must declare an interest in pursuing a liberal arts program cumulating in a B.A. degree, with a major in the humanities or social science; demonstrate academic
excellence, particularly in the subject of English; demonstrate an interest in music, the arts and/or student government while
attending CCC; must also demonstrate an ability in communications as evidenced by work on the College’s student newspaper,
contributions to a literary magazine, reporting for a local newspaper and/or other communications activities.
During 2012-2013, the Foundation
provided $393,287 to the College and
to the community through awards,
scholarships, campus improvements and
other awards including the following:
• $242,767 for 270 Scholarships and 79
Commencement Awards to diminish some
of the unmet need of $21,242,608 for
2012-2013.
• $18,358 in Faculty Grants for the Emerson
Endowed Chair, four Special Project
Grants and one Summer Fellowship.
• $84,632 for Program Grants.
The Thommie Walsh Memorial Scholarship was established through the efforts of Thommie’s sister, Barbara. The scholarship
will be awarded to a full-time, returning sophomore attending the Auburn Campus who is pursuing a concentration in Theatre
or Music at CCC. First preference will be given to a graduate of Auburn High School.

SProgram Support
upport to the College
During 2012-13 the CCC Foundation provided significant program funding. Foundation grants give CCC faculty the new
tools they need to provide updated, cutting-edge educational programming for our students. Here is a sampling of
Foundation-funded initiatives in the past year.
The Instructional Equipment Fund provided support for:
• Seven I-pad minis and software for our “Sim Man” (simulation mannequins for use by nursing students)
• Over $10,000 in pumps, software and other items for CCC’s Nursing Labs
• An HXR-MC2000U SONY camera for our Telecommunications program in the CCC’s School of Media and the Arts (SOMA)
• A Logic Analyzer device for CCC’s Mechanical/Electrical Technology programs
• More than $6,600 in grants to update our kiln for pottery and art production
• A high-end Yamaha Digital Piano for our music students
The CCC Foundation provided a special grant to purchase laptop computers for military veterans attending the College.
Cayuga’s Veteran Laptop Loan Program (VLLP) makes laptops available to student veterans for use on and off campus to assist
them with their educational success.
Thanks to a series of grants from the Green Family Foundation, the CCC Foundation has provided $77,000 for Cayuga’s
Telecommunications programs. Their 2012 grant helped purchase new flooring, lighting and acoustical materials for our
television studio.
Nursing student Samantha Howley using technology
to practice the art of nursing
Using a grant from the John Ben Snow Foundation, the CCC Foundation purchased furnishings, a stage, a lectern and other
items for use in the “Fashion Bug” special events area at the Fulton Campus.
The mosaic mural project, funded by the CCC Foundation’s Daniel C. Labeille Artist-in-Residence Endowment, added a new
outdoor mural at our Auburn Campus. CCC students designed this piece and created it under the direction of Jennifer Gandee,
a long-time adjunct instructor at the College, talented ceramics artist, and director of Gandee Gallery in Fabius, New York.
(See accompanying article)
The Library Collection Fund of the CCC Foundation purchased fifteen titles to bolster our science, history and music
collections. These included E-Healthcare Systems and Wireless Communications: Current and Future Challenges to support
students in our Nursing program.
The CCC Foundation secured a highly competitive grant through the Coleman Foundation in Chicago, the leading
foundation in support of community college entrepreneurship education. Our E-ship initiatives overseen by Professor Thomas
Paczkowski, the Fred L. Emerson Endowed Chair for Enterprise and Innovation, used the Coleman grant for Cayuga’s Business
Idea Competition. (See accompanying article)
Special Projects and Development Grants provide faculty and staff members the opportunity to attend conferences,
explore possible new programs and develop new intersession courses. In the summer of 2013, Business Instructor Amy
Valente researched the potential for developing a new certificate program in the area of Tourism and Hospitality. Her proposal
noted that “tourism is a $1 billion industry in Central New York, and current global economic conditions…create opportunities
for our region to draw additional international visitors… In addition, the region has an abundance of arts and cultural
opportunities…” As a result of Ms. Valente’s work, a certificate program was presented to the Board of Trustees at its January
2014 meeting.

CCC Students Create “Roots in the Finger Lakes” Mosaic Mural
Artists have captured the beauty of the Finger Lakes in every type of media
for centuries. Now the Finger Lakes have been portrayed in a mosaic mural
entitled “Roots in the Finger Lakes” at Cayuga Community College. The piece
was designed by Cayuga students with artist-in-residence Jennifer Gandee
and faculty member Melissa Johnson. This project was funded by the CCC
Foundation through its Daniel C. Labeille Artist-in-Residence Endowment.
Gandee and Johnson began with a series of meetings with students, faculty
and staff. “We envisioned this as a complete learning process from the start,”
Gandee said. “First, I introduced students to the history and forms of mosaics
going back to ancient times.” Johnson continued, “We then asked students to
sketch out their ideas, discussing their drafts as a group. Through this process
we combined several of the themes they presented: a tree trunk and roots,
sedimentary layers with fossils, and the Finger Lakes. Our collaborative
drawing of the image was further developed by Jen.”
The chosen design incorporates multiple elements into one unified piece.
“The lakes became the roots of a large tree, growing in multi-colored layers of soil, interspersed with fossil and organic imagery,” said Johnson. An outdoor wall near the College’s
School of Media and the Arts (SOMA) was selected as the site for the mural, because SOMA brings together CCC’s programs in Media Production, Audio/Radio Production, Studio Art,
Music, Theatre, Writing and Literature.
The final piece included more than 1,000 individually-fired tiles, plus other materials donated by local businesses. Jesse Kline, who was involved in the downtown mosaics in Auburn,
assisted with the final stages of the installation in April 2013. “Students, employees, CCC alumni and other community members came together helping to install the tiles,” said Gandee.
In the future the College plans to add an outdoor seating area where students and the College community can read, study, play music and appreciate this work of art.
Falcone Lecture Series Brings Yvonne Conte to CCC
Just in time for the holidays, motivational speaker Yvonne Conte arrived at CCC in November 2012 to share her unique perspective on how to
“De-Stress the Mess.” Ms. Conte spoke at a new venue on our Auburn Campus, the Cayuga Café. Her presentation was sponsored by the CCC
Foundation’s Noreen and Michael J. Falcone Lecture Fund, which has brought outstanding speakers to the College and surrounding communities
since 1997.
Ms. Conte, who lives in Westvale, New York, sprinkled humor and stories from her Italian-American upbringing throughout the evening. She read
brief excerpts from her most recent book, Cry, Laugh, Cook! A Collection of Essays, Conversations, and Conte Family Recipes. She reached out to a crowd
of over 100 guests in CCC’s Café, encouraging them to “remember the emotional and physical benefits of laughter. Our thoughts and actions are
closely linked in our lives; the better you think, the better you will become.”
Yvonne Conte has written 87 feature articles and published six books. She also presents keynote addresses each year for such clients as Xerox
Corporation, Time Warner, GE Global, AT&T, and Merck and Medeva Pharmaceutical. Featured on national and regional television programs, Conte
also offers workshops through Humor Advantage Training Inc. Her uplifting message has reached more than 50,000 people across the United States
and around the world. For more information about Conte, visit her at www.yvonneconte.com.

Entrepreneurship Update: The Coleman Foundation supports Business
Idea Competition
Cayuga Community College embarked on an Entrepreneurial Initiative in 2006 to
enhance the quality of life and increase entrepreneurship in Central New York. Thanks to
grants totaling more than $2 million, the CCC Foundation has helped the College:
• create the nation’s first Endowed Chair at a community college in Entrepreneur ship, the Fred L. Emerson Foundation, Inc. Chair in Enterprise and Innovation;
• underwrite award-winning student run enterprises (Cayuga Records and C3 Video);
• generate thousands of dollars for charity through social e-ship (the Prom Dress
Project);
• start a Wine Studies Program capitalizing on the Finger Lakes’ wine industry; and
• co-found the SUNY ENGINE (Educational Network to Grow Innovation and
Entrepreneurship).
Cayuga has infused entrepreneurship across academic disciplines, touching more than
20% of our students. As Professor Thomas Paczkowski, CCC’s Emerson Endowed Chair
noted, “While we have had success in encouraging students to think and work entrepreneurially, we need to take the next step. We now wish to encourage our entrepreneurs
to test and advance their ideas under the guidance of experienced mentors.”
CCC Foundation Contributions 2004-2013 as per audit
2012-13 Update
In 2012-13, CCC took its entrepreneurship program to this next level, involving
mentors to guide our students. CCC piloted the 2013 Business Idea Competition, open to
students from all of SUNY’s community colleges. Using practicing entrepreneurs to assist
these students, we recruited an outstanding group of mentors. They included
John Liddy, Entrepreneur in Residence at Syracuse University; Robert Pine, business
consultant and founder of a telecommunications company; Richard Chalupnicki, owner
of a financial services company; Laura Coburn, educator and founder of Coburn Design;
and others. “These entrepreneurs have all started and managed successful businesses,”
said Paczkowski. “They were excited to contribute to the next step of our Entrepreneurial
Initiative.” Cayuga faculty involved in the competition included Amy Valente, Sheila
Myers and William Prosser. Prizes were awarded in the amounts of $1,250, $750, $500
and $250.
“The Business Idea Competition provided mentoring opportunities to students from
practicing entrepreneurs,” Paczkowski continued. “Students met with their mentors
prior to submission of their applications and received expert advice following the
competition.” Each entry included a concept summary, the intended target market, a
value proposition, market analysis and a description of the product/service offering.
Since 2006, the CCC Foundation has secured major support for the Entrepreneurial
Initiative from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation and the Stardust Foundation of Central
NY (Auburn); the First Niagara Foundation (Lockport, NY); the Coleman Foundation
(Chicago, IL); the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation (Kansas City, MO); and the Stardust
Foundation (Scottsdale, AZ).

CCC Foundation Recognized as “Top 100” in America
Since its inception in 1982, the Cayuga Community College
Foundation has consistently earned praise as one of the best in
SUNY. Now, the CCC Foundation has taken its place among the
best foundations in America, ranking #95 among the nation’s
community colleges.
Dr. William R. Crowe, Director of the University of Georgia’s Center
for Continuing Education, has completed extensive research on
public two-year colleges and their supporting foundations. His
work was based on the annual tax returns (IRS 990 filings) of each
foundation, ranking them in an order based on total assets and
funds raised. The data included filings from 2009-2012, making
this the most comprehensive research project ever conducted in
the arena of two-year college advancement.
“Dr. Crowe’s research continues the national recognition given
to the CCC Foundation in recent years,” said Executive Director
Jeff Hoffman. “Our Foundation has earned accolades from the
National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship
for its support of Cayuga’s ‘E-ship Across the Curriculum’ model. In
addition, our good friends Jack and Jerry Bisgrove were honored
in Washington, D.C. by the Council for Resource Development
(CRD) for their support of CCC. Their award was one of only ten
given nationwide to community colleges.”
“This recognition of the Cayuga Community College Foundation
is a testament to our donors,” said Board President Lloyd Hoskins.
“The outstanding support we receive, both for annual giving and
for capital campaigns, has helped us earn this recognition. We
take our responsibility very seriously to raise significant support
for the College and to be diligent in our management of all funds
entrusted to the care of the CCC Foundation.”

ACC/CCC Alumni Association
With each passing year, the ACC/CCC Alumni Association continues to carry forth its mission to provide
services to our graduates, our students and our community. Its reputation of being one of the strongest
associations of its size in the SUNY system has been earned and well deserved.
Our Alumni Association’s achievements reflect the strong commitments of ACC/CCC’s graduates and
friends. By staying involved and connected, they enjoy fellowship with other alums while building a
foundation of success for students—our future alumni. We encourage you to think about your days at
ACC/CCC from time to time, reflecting back on how your education positively affected your life.
The 2012-13 issues of The Spartan alumni newsletter were special anniversary editions celebrating
the 60th anniversary of the founding of the College. ACC welcomed its first incoming freshmen on
September 1, 1953; many thousands have passed through our doors since then. We’ve been here for
60 years and we’re looking forward to the next 60 years of educating students and enriching lives!

lanned Giving
Our Faculty: Leaving a Legacy at Cayuga
Community College
Author Eugene P. Burtin wrote, “Teaching is leaving a vestige of one’s self
in the development of another. And surely the student is a bank in which
you can deposit your most precious treasures.” For sixty years the faculty
and staff of Auburn/Cayuga Community College have been depositing
a bit of themselves in every student who has walked through our doors.
As each student leaves the College, he or she takes a part of every ACC/
CCC teacher into our communities. This is the legacy of an excellent
educational institution.
Many of Cayuga’s faculty, staff and retirees of the College have taken this
concept a step further. They have created an additional legacy at CCC
through their wills and estates. The most recent person to do this is Linda
Alfieri, Director of Cayuga’s Nursing Program. “I have always supported
the CCC Foundation with my annual giving,” said Linda. “In 2011, I collaborated with my colleague and Cayuga alumna Dr. Cathleen McColgin
to create the annual Alfieri-McColgin Nursing Excellence Scholarship.”
This is awarded to a student entering his/her second year in CCC’s
Nursing Program who has demonstrated a spirit of inquiry and passion
for the pursuit of excellence in the nursing profession.
But this still wasn’t enough.
“My husband and I realized that through our will, we could create a
permanent legacy in support of Cayuga’s nursing students,” Linda said.
“Working with the CCC Foundation and our attorney, we have set aside a
portion of our estate to endow a scholarship for nursing students. We are
delighted that our gift will support students, not just for one year at
a time but forever.”
Gifts like this represent giving at the highest level. They reflect our
personal values as well as our strong belief in the future of the College.
Legacy Circle
For over thirty years, the faithful support of alumni and friends has been a key to the
success of the Cayuga Community College Foundation. In that spirit of giving, we have
created the Legacy Circle to honor individuals who have included the CCC Foundation in
their estate plans. The Legacy Circle represents giving at the highest level. Commitments
such as these assist in bringing outstanding educators and speakers to the College;
providing scholarships for outstanding students; and enhancing the College’s programs,
services and facilities.
If you have named the Cayuga Community College Foundation in your estate plans or
would like to know how to do so, contact Jeffrey L. Hoffman, the executive director of the
Foundation at (315) 294-8627 or foundation@cayuga-cc.edu. Listed below are bequests
