Sulphuric acid mist causes coughing and will burn eyes and skin. First Aid Skin Action: Skin contact: possible if the battery electrolyte is splashed. Battery electrolyte is corrosive to skin. Treat as an acid burn. Remove from source; remove contaminated footwear and clothing immediately. Wash with soap and water. Obtain medical attention. Eyes Action: Eye contact: possible if the battery electrolyte is splashed. Treat as an acid burn. Remove from source; remove contaminated clothing immediately. Flush eyes thoroughly with tepid water for 15 minutes, lifting eye lids regularly. Obtain urgent medical attention. Inhalation Action: Inhalation: possible from toxic fumes when involved in fire. Remove patient to ventilated area and lay down. If not breathing, commence cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Obtain urgent medical attention. Ingestion Ingestion: possible via hand contaminated by contact with lead or acid components of the battery. Do not induce vomiting, keep calm and quiet. Drink copious amounts of water. Obtain urgent medical attention. Splash-proof chemical safety goggles or a face shield should be worn for eye and face protection when working with cells. Appropriate respiratory protection should be worn when mist (e.g. following excessive overcharge) exceeds permissible limits. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION Storage and Transport Storage Precautions Transport Handling Transport Keep inside a well ventilated building at moderate temperatures. During transport, the batteries are kept in wooden or cardboard / polystyrene packaging. Considerable care should be exercised when handling the batteries due to their weight and the relative fragility of the case. Do not use the terminal posts for handling or lifting the cells or batteries. When supplied, plastic handles should be employed. Battery Energy sealed lead acid batteries are classified in Australia as non dangerous goods for road transport. For air transport, they are classified as suitable under IATA Dangerous goods regulation Special Provision clause A 67. Spills and Disposal Spills or Leaks Disposal In the event of a spill or a leak avoid breathing the vapour / fumes and avoid contact with the skin. Wear protective clothing, acid resistant boots, gloves, face shield and goggles. If SAFE stop the source of the leak. Evacuate and limit access to area. Remove combustible material and all sources of ignition. No smoking or naked flames. Isolate the spill and dilute with water then neutralize with sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate. Advise the Police and Fire Brigade of location, type of product and quantity of spill. When neutralized collect residue and place in a suitable container labelled as containing hazardous waste. Treat refuse as hazardous waste when disposing. Do not release hazardous waste into drains, sewers or the environment. Special Precautions Special Precautions Keep away from sources of ignition during and immediately following charge. Use insulated tools when working with cells. In confined areas place the shroud cover on the inter-cell connections or on the cell top as soon as is practicable.
