Space-Ray To Display Full Line Of Radiant Gas Brooders & Heaters
For Pig And Poultry House Operations At The 2015 IPPE Show
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina USA --- Space-Ray will display its full line of energy efficient, radiant gas brooders for
both pig heating and poultry brooding operations at the 2015 International Production & Processing Expo in the Georgia
World Congress Center in Atlanta this January. Booth# C13025.
Space-Ray, a division of Gas Fired Products, Inc. of Charlotte, N.C., was the original designer of the radiant gas brooder
in the U.S., serving the agricultural market now for over 65 years.
On display will be four distinct product groups, each targeting a specific segment of pig heating and poultry brooding
production — the SHP High Pressure Radiant Gas Brooder series, the recently introduced Big Foot Radiant Tube
Brooder series, the newly updated, corrosion resistant SRB40CR Radiant Gas Brooder series, and the PCA/PCS
Positive Pressure Tube Heater series.
SHP High Pressure Radiant Gas Brooder Series
Space-Ray's SHP High Pressure Radiant Series consists of four models: SHP 2, SHP 3, SHP 8 and SHP 17.
All SHP models feature stainless steel canopies for strength and durability, stainless steel burner systems that
modulate from low to high burn as needed to increase fuel efficiency, and maintenance friendly orifice holders that are
easy to clean and wash down. The models are ideal for new or retrofit replacements for other high pressure brooders.
In most cases, individual units can be replaced without added installation costs. No electricity is required for operation.
Thermostats & Control Panel Options
All of the models available in the SHP line-up are available with both individual thermostat and control panel options.
Thermostat options include an Individual Thermostat that provides general ambient control, or a "Remote Individual"
Thermostat that can be lowered to liter level.
An optional modulating control panel that requires no electricity is available that automatically controls the brooders
based on the thermostat’s requirements. As a result, the brooder offers one of the highest fuel efficiencies of any of its
kind on the market. Also available are two economical High/Low control panels that provide up to 20% lower fuel
consumption by automatically adjusting the brooder’s output from maximum heat to minimum heat output in seconds.
Control panels are available with an integral digital thermostat or a thermostat that can be remotely mounted.

LP Gas Models: SHP 2, SHP 3 And SHP 8
Space-Ray's SHP High Pressure Radiant Gas series, SHP 2 (3,440 Btu/Hr. (1kw)), and SHP 3 (6,000 Btu/Hr. (1.75
kW)) are designed for smaller broods – game birds, small poultry and pigs. Both models come standard with a safety
device and dust filter. The SHP 8 (17,000 Btu/Hr. (5kW), will accommodate as many as 170 pigs, 1500 broilers and up
to 500 turkeys.
LP Gas or Natural Gas Models: SHP 17
The SHP 17 offers the same output as the SHP 8 and accommodates identical brood sizes, but features a
unique circular design that allows the radiant heat to be spread over a wide circular area for added fuel savings, performance and a longer life.
The model is available in an LP Gas version or Natural Gas version, both featuring a unique double gas burner system
that combusts dust and carbon to prevent buildup, thus eliminating the need for an air cleaner in reasonably clean
environments . (For extra harsh agricultural environments, a stainless steel air filter is available as an option.) A hose
kit is also available as an accessory for new or existing operations. The SHP 17 features a two orifice system with a
unique pressure adjustment capability that provides from high to low burn settings based on the heating needs of the
structure. Heater capacity ranges from 2,559 BTU/Hr to 17,000 BTU/Hr, (0.75 kW to 5.01 kW), mounting heights are
from 48 to 60 in. (2,120 to 1,520 mm) above the floor.
Big Foot Radiant Gas Tube Heater Series (PBF)
Space-Ray's latest series of radiant tube brooders for poultry houses was designed to yield an extra wide, rectangular
heat pattern — matching the shape of most poultry houses. Marketed under the name BIG FOOT®, this new brooder
provides one of the largest rectangular shaped heating footprints available for modern poultry applications.
Available in natural or propane gas, the new PBF Series from Space-Ray saves on fuel costs, reduces maintenance
and permits higher mounting in the poultry house for broader coverage and added efficiency.
The reflector angle of the BIG FOOT® radiant tube brooder is engineered to an optimum angle of 19º which improves
the radiant footprint and minimizes convective wash. The result is a more uniform heat distribution, better brooding
conditions, and more comfort for the birds.
Space-Ray Big Foot Heaters use positive pressure to push products of combustion through the heavy-duty calorized
aluminized steel combustion chamber. Calorized tube material offers improved corrosion resistance and greater
radiant output.
Each of the heaters come with a choice of one-stage or two-stage input controls for added flexibility and a totally
enclosed burner box that places all the power, thermostat and gas connections in one central location for easier

installation and maintenance.
The CSA-Certified BIG FOOT® radiant tube brooder series is available in four sizes from 60,000 BTU/hr (18 kW/hr) to
90,000 BTU/hr (26 kW/hr). The most popular size is the 80,000 BTU/Hr. (23.5 kW/Hr) version. The Big Foot is also
available in either “U” shaped tube or straight tube versions. The standard emitter tube length is 20 ft (6.1 m), while the
overall length for the “U” tube version is 11½ ft. (3.5 m) and the straight version is 21½ ft (6.6 m).
Each unit is pre-assembled for easy installation and comes with fresh air intake kit, exhaust hood, stainless steel flexible gas connector and a pre wired electrical connection. Additionally, each unit offers a 3-year limited warranty on the
complete emitter assembly.
Unique TISS™ System
Unique to Space-Ray is the patented¹ TISS™ system (Tube Integrity Safety System) that automatically turns off the
heater in the unlikely event of a tube failure. With the TISS™ system, an insulated aluminum wire is positioned in
tension above the reflector. A low voltage circuit continuously monitors the clearance between the reflectors and the
ceiling for excessive heat and tube integrity compromise. If the heat increases due to heat exchanger failure, the wire
melts, the safety circuit is broken and the brooder shuts down.
SRB40CR Radiant Gas Brooder Series
Space-Ray's new and improved radiant gas brooder, the Model SRB40, now provides increased corrosion resistance.
Important changes include a new stainless steel burner (previously cast iron), stainless steel brackets, stainless steel
gas lines and a new dual fuel gas regulator which enables the gas valve on the brooder to operate using either natural
gas or propane gas. The new dual fuel gas regulator is only available on direct spark ignition (DSI) models. This new
feature eliminates the need for users to undergo the costly retrofit expense of changing the gas valve when switching
from propane to natural gas or vice-versa.
The new SRB40CR series brooder is built to resist corrosion from humidity and ammonia, while providing lower
maintenance, greater reliability and improved durability. The new stainless steel burner is designed to withstand the
harsh, demanding conditions found in today’s poultry houses, and can be easily disassembled for cleaning. The
updated SRB40CR brooder also incorporates a new plastic box that houses the ignition control designed to protect
the spark module and electrical connections from both moisture and dust.

Fuel Savings
With Space-Ray's Direct Spark Ignition (DSI) brooders, growers can now save up to 5.5 gallons (22 liters) of propane
for each continuous 24-hour period in a house installed with 14 brooders when compared to pilot operation. This
economical ignition system, combined with the improved corrosion resistance, makes the SRB40 brooder a cost efficient and durable option.
Instead of wasting fuel using a standard pilot light, the Space-Ray Model SRB40CR No. 5 Direct Spark Ignition
Brooder has a powerful spark ignition system that directly lights the main burner. This lowers maintenance since there
is no standing pilot to clog up, blow out or waste fuel.
“If you multiply daily fuel savings by the length of a crop in days and the number of crops per year, our Direct Spark
Ignition brooder can save poultry houses a considerable sum of money and add to operational efficiency" noted Wilf
Jackson, Director of Sales & Marketing for Space-Ray.
Quicker Assembly and Easy Maintenance
The unique design of the Space-Ray radiant gas brooder allows quick, trouble free access to the main burner orifice
by simply sliding back a quick release, stainless steel bracket. This helps reduce maintenance time and assures
longer life and lower operating costs. Assembly is now easier with keyhole slots for screws.
Broad Heat Pattern Featured
The new CSA certified Space-Ray DSI radiant gas brooder has a 40,000 Btu/hr (12 kW/hr) capacity and features a
broad heat pattern.
The heat pattern is enhanced by Space-Ray’s unique 60° emitter angle that is especially designed to aim the radiant
heat directly at the birds where it is needed most. Space-Ray’s stainless steel emitter is fully insulated and enclosed
so that the insulation will not crumble or distort in the tough operating conditions normally found in poultry houses.
An engineered spun steel aluminim canopy maximizes the downward heat effect.
The DSI brooder can be used in both single and multi-zone installations. The multi-zone operations can be controlled
by thermostats, a computer or an environmental controller. Each brooder incorporates a 100% gas safety shut-off
value and a flame failure safety device.
In addition to the new SRB40CR Direct Spark Ignition Brooder, Space-Ray also offers an energy efficient line of pilot
ignition radiant brooders, a line of single jet brooders and a complete line of both pull through (negative pressure) and
push through (positive pressure) tube-type gas heaters for the poultry industry.

PCA/PCS Radiant Gas Tube Heater Series
Space-Ray's PCA/PCS line of positive pressure radiant gas tube heaters feature highly efficient aluminum reflectors,
giving the heaters have a high reflectivity rating of 97.5%. The reflectors totally cover the emitter tubes for uniform
energy distribution on the poultry house floor, maximum emitter tube temperature and minimum convection loss.
A heavy-duty reflector support hanger adds to the durability of the unit.
Available in natural or propane gas, the PCA/PCS Series Radiant Gas Tube Heaters from Space-Ray saves in fuel
costs, reduces maintenance and permits higher mounting in the poultry house for broader coverage and added
efficiency.
The Space-Ray PCA/PCS Tube Heaters use positive pressure to push products of combustion through the heavy-duty
calorized aluminized steel combustion chamber. Calorized or heat-treated emitter tubes are offered as an option by
Space-Ray. Calorized tube material offers improved corrosion resistance and greater radiant output.
The tube heaters come with a choice of one-stage or two-stage input controls for added flexibility and a totally enclosed burner box that places all the power, thermostat and gas connections in one central location for easier installation and maintenance.
Five Models Available
CSA-Certified, the gas tube heaters are available in five models and numerous configurations. Capacities of PCA/PCS
Series heaters range from 75,000 BTU/hr (22 kW/hr) to 150,000 BTU/hr (44 kW/hr). Lengths vary from 20 ft (6.1 m) to
60 ft (18.3 m), depending on the model selected. Included as standard on PCA/PCS Infrared Poultry Heaters is the
totally enclosed burner box that includes the blower motor and a heavy-duty cast iron burner for strength and reliability.
Other standard features including an all metal fresh air ceiling intake, an external 24V thermostat connection and a
three prong power cord connection, all designed to minimize installation cost and add to installation flexibility. Also
standard are a step opening combination gas valve for quiet operation and added safety, a ½-inch NPT gas connection and monitoring light systems for trouble shooting in case maintenance is required. A 36 inch long stainless steel
gas connector is also included with each heater.
A heavy-duty ball bearing blower motor comes permanently lubricated to reduce maintenance and does not require
any lubrication for the life of the motor.
Each Space-Ray PCA/PCS model comes standard with “S” hooks, an exhaust hood, a 36 in. flexible gas connector,
a manual shut-off valve and an all metal fresh air intake. An optional Cold Air Stopper™ system stops cold or hot air
from entering the poultry house, even when the heaters are not in operation. Cold Stopper™ also helps to reduce
sweating problems.

Unique TISS™ System
Like the Big Foot tube heater (above) the PCA/PCS Series also features Space-Ray's patented¹ TISS™ system that
automatically turns off the heater in the unlikely event of a tube failure. With the TISS™ system, an insulated aluminum
wire is positioned in tension above the reflector. A low voltage circuit continuously monitors the clearance between the
reflectors and the ceiling for excessive heat and tube integrity compromise. If the heat increases due to heat exchanger failure, the wire melts, the safety circuit is broken and the brooder shuts down.
Radiant Brooder Principle
Unlike space heaters that work from the top down, heating the air and upper areas of an area first before heating the
farrows, pigs or birds, the Space-Ray radiant gas brooders operate using the same principle as the sun’s rays.
Radiant warmth is delivered directly into the brooding area where it is needed most, passing heat directly to the floor
area before heating the air. The radiant heat then helps dry out the floor, reducing ammonia levels. The heated floor
acts as a thermal reservoir trapping and recycling heat to save energy.
