School Direct is a teacher training scheme that enables candidates to apply for training within a school or group of schools. Each programme is delivered in partnership with an accredited teacher training institution, such as the University of Greenwich, and comprises of on-the-job training and university-based courses. Many of our successful School Direct graduates find employment within their training school or in another school that is part of the scheme. School Direct offers two types of training places: School Direct places are open to all graduates and are funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee. Tuition fee loans and bursaries may be available from the Department for Education. The university supports a wide range of subjects on this route, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, music, computing, design and technology, physical education and French. School Direct (Salaried) places are open to graduates with prior career experience (not necessarily in education). Trainees are employed as unqualified teachers with a salary subsidised by the Department required to meet the broad demands of teaching. Avery Hill (30 credits) School Direct Training (Salaried) trainees will follow a training programme that is determined by the schools that they are attached to. This may include the courses shown above. Graduates from this programme can pursue a teaching career in secondary schools. Key facts Attendance: 1 year full-time Entry requirements: You should have: A good honours degree (2.2 or above) from a UK university or equivalent. At least 50% of your degree must be related to the subject that you wish to train to teach. PLUS GCSEs at grade C in English language and mathematics prior to application. In addition, you must: • Attend an interview at the school to which you applied • Provide recent evidence of working with/observing children in a school classroom • Pass Professional numeracy and literacy skills tests before beginning the programme • Be prepared to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. For the salaried route, you must also provide evidence of career experience (this does not have to be in an educational setting). Your application will be made to a specific school but all successful candidates will be registered as students of the university. There is no closing date for applications to postgraduate courses, but many fill up quickly, so you are advised to apply early. Teaching and assessment Financial information You will be assessed on a continuous basis for recommendation of Qualified Teacher Status. You will receive academic assignments for the PGCE.
