2:00-3:00 Breakout Session I
I. Successful FBO Management (Spring Lake A)
Mark Jaraczewski, McKinney National Airport
Fixed Base Operations (FBOs) are a complex and challenging business.
The FBO business model has changed, and we must be able to adapt to
the market demand. Management remains a crucial role for personnel,
client relationships, safety, and a variety of other topics that are crucial
for success. How your FBO is perceived sets the tone for your customer’s
experience. Hear from experienced FBO operators on what works, what
hasn’t, and what makes a successful FBO.

airport managers. No formal presentations will be made during the
session but the panel members will share their experiences and thoughts
on questions and issues brought up by the moderator and those
attending this session. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions
about any issues and concerns at their airports. This forum is designed

Breakout Session II
I. Beyond the Fence: Why You Should Care What the Neighbors
Think (Spring Lake A)
Rob Mark, CEO, CommAvia
Wait just a minute … listening to the neighbors relates to airport
marketing how exactly?
OK, so approaching marketing from a bit of a seldom-used back road
might sound a bit far-fetched, but it’s really not. In fact, listening is
actually the only way to sell anyone anything these days and airports are
always trying to sell something — a new hangar, bigger airplanes visiting
the community, a loan to create new infrastructure — to name a few.
But just as a great Texas chili or superb pecan pie relies on the right
ingredients, marketing an airport demands first-rate communications for
success.
Good communications with the neighbors can buff an airport’s image
until it shines like a jewel. Poor communications, however — or what often
happens, none at all — can create insurmountable roadblocks, some
massive enough that no amount of money can fix.
Give us one hour on April 17 and we’ll send you home with at least five
marketing communications ideas you can implement at your airport the
next day — as well as a thorough explanation of why they’re important to
the success of your operation.
II. Managing Your Airport’s Zoning and Encroachment Issues
(Spring Lake B)
Daniel Benson, AICP, TxDOT Aviation Division
Mike Shahan, North Texas Regional Airport
Stacy Snell, AICP, Planning Manager, City of New Braunfels
This session will include a presentation from TxDOT Aviation Division staff
on the pertinent zoning regulations and policies that all airport sponsors

need to be aware of. It will be followed by presentations on recent zoning
efforts pursued by two airports, highlighting the issues and challenges
faced by one city-owned and one county-owned airport.
III. Airport Project Development: From Beginning to End (Veramendi F-J)
Bill Macke, TxDOT Aviation Division (Planning)
Amy Slaughter, TxDOT Aviation Division (Grants)
Harry Lorton, TxDOT Aviation Division (Engineering)
Ed Mayle, TxDOT Aviation Division (Engineering)
If you’ve ever wondered about the airport planning and development
process from beginning to end then you will not want to miss this
session. TxDOT Aviation staff from Planning, Grants and Engineering
will discuss their respective roles in making airport projects happen to
better illustrate the process from earliest conception to completion of
construction.
