BARLOW'S WHEEL

PURPOSE:
Demonstration of Fleming's left­hand rule
OPERATION:
Arrange the device according to the following instructions:
1) Place mercury in the concave section surrounding the pole of
the U­shaped magnet.
2) Arrange the toothed wheel as illustrated in the diagram on
the right. The tip of the one of the teeth should be 1mm deep in
the mercury.
After setting the device as explained above, connect each terminal of the device with the positive and negative poles of
a 1.5V dry battery. The toothed wheel will then rotate according to Fleming's left­hand rule.
NOTES:
• If the wheel is rotating too fast, the mercury will scatter.
• When the wheel parts from the mercury, a spark is generated and the mercury will release a vapor. Do not let the
vapor come into contact with the face.
