Products
HVPD are experts in the growing industry
of partial discharge (PD) testing and
monitoring of in-service high voltage
cables and plant. We offer a complete
range of equipment that gives an early
warning of faults and deterioration in
medium and high voltage (MV and HV)
insulation, allowing plant owners to take
early corrective action.
We provide bespoke solutions to our
growing customer base in the oil and gas,
renewables, shipping, transmission and
distribution, and power generation
industries.
Partial discharge is caused by discontinuities and flaws in medium and high
voltage electrical insulation. PD activity will
eventually lead to complete insulation
failure which in turn can cause unplanned
outages and downtime. PD occurs due to
many factors including poor installation,
ageing, manufacturing defects, environmental impact and third-party damage.
If costly unplanned outages are to be
avoided, it is vital to carry out regular PD
testing as part of a condition-based
management (CBM) regime. This enables
operators to take baseline PD readings in
order to evaluate insulation quality, to
locate PD activity sites and to target repairs.

Applications
On-line field applications
Cables
Switchgear
Motors and Generators
Transformers
PD can occur in any MV or HV cable
operated at 3.3 kV or above. Our testing
can locate potential failure sites to within
0.5% of a cable’s overall length using the
technique of On-line Cable Mapping.
The formation of surface tracking and PD
related erosion can lead to in-service failures
through flashover. HVPD’s technology can
be used to test Air-Insulated Switchgear
(AIS), Solid-Insulated Switchgear (SIS)
and Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS).
On-line PD testing is now widely accepted
in the rotating HV machine industry as the
best way to assess the stator winding
condition of in-service HV motors and
generators. Using the HVPD Longshot™
PD diagnostic system with its dedicated
PDGold© software it is possible to carry
out both on-line (in-service) and off-line
(factory) PD testing of rotating machine
high voltage insulation.
HVPD offer a number of on-line PD test and
monitoring solutions for in-service testing of
oil, solid, and gas insulated transformers.
HVPD’s on-line PD screening of medium
voltage (3.3 to 45 kV) and high voltage (66
kV+) transformers gives pre-qualification of
any dangerous discharges emanating from
within the main MV/HV windings and/or the
accessories attached to the transformers.
Case study
Case study
Early-life on-line PD testing of the motors
for a power generation company
On-line PD testing of a generator
transformer
HVPD performed on-line testing on 3x
6.6 kV water pump motors from two
different manufacturers. Baseline
spot-tests produced an assessment of the
present insulation condition of the stator
windings and provided a basis for future
PD trending.
HVPD Longshot™ results indicated that
one of the manfacturer’s motors had stator
winding insulation in the ‘Unreliable’
condition category.
Our client filed a warranty claim with
the manufacturer, based on inadequate
design of the stator winding. Two separate
third party off-line PD tests backed up our
findings and the motors were rewound
and repaired under warranty.
Following a failure in the 275 kV generator
conecting link in a transformer, the cable
and sealing end were replaced. On-line
measurements on the transformer and
repaired HV connecting link were carried
out at the commissioning stage.
HFCT sensors were attached around
the earth connections of the HV cable and
TEV probes were used to perform the
time-of-flight measurements to locate the
PD events. PD was identified and traced to
support insulators on the blue phase
connecting link between the HV cable
sealing end and the transformer output
bushing. These were then repaired and
the transformer, retested for PD, passed
as suitable for service.
Case study
On-line PD cable testing and mapping
for a light rail operator
A 33 kV XLPE cable system had been in
service for twelve months before faults
began to occur at cable joints. The HVPD
Longshot™ with PDMap© detected
high-magnitude cable PD activity on
multiple circuits.
Out of more than one hundred 33 kV
circuits tested, significant PD was
detected within six, putting them in the
‘Red’ condition category: ‘Major concern,
locate PD and then repair or replace.’
The sources of PD were mapped and
located to specific joints which were then
replaced and retested to verify that the
repairs were successful.
6
Case study
Switchgear PD monitoring for a
distribution utility customer
The HVPD Mini™ Monitor identified
rising PD levels in an 11 kV switchboard.
Transient Earth Voltage (TEV) sensors,
attached to the metal-clad switchgear,
identified surface discharge from two
panels. Intermittent PD activity between
5 a.m. and 9 a.m. was caused by the
formation of condensation on insulation
surfaces as the dew point was reached
(this would have been missed if PD
spot-tests had been carried out during
normal working hours). The client was
able to correct this issue cost-effectively
by installing temperature-controlled
space heating into their switchboard.
