MU Music Department CADENZA - Spring 1996 A Message from the Chair The Department of Music announces the establishment of Friends of Music at Mansfield, an organization to boost the presence of musical arts in the community and to provide much needed scholarship assistance to attract talented students. We hope our Cadenza readers will consider becoming one of our Friends. All Friends will receive special invitations to outstanding events and regular correspondence concerning the wide variety of activities sponsored by the department during the academic year. Be a part of this dynamic endeavor described in the following pages, and do become a member of the Friends of Music at Mansfield. The Second Annual Scholarship Weekend is scheduled for April 26-28. Be sure not to miss this opportunity to hear the outstanding performances of small and large ensembles, Kreuscher Scholarship Winners, the Music Department Faculty in their Gala Concert of music of many styles, the Concert Wind Ensemble, and an evening of Choral Music. Plan to attend now, and order your tickets as early as possible. The administration has informally announced that all of Mansfield's teacher education programs received passing marks following our October evaluation by the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) sent Dr. Dennis Ritz (BS '70, MS '74),Chairperson of the Music Department at Shippensburg University, to evaluate our music education program. Dennis found us to be passing in all respects, but in true Mansfield style, he expects us to be better than passing. Our grateful appreciation to Dennis for his several suggestions that have already prompted improvements that we could not have made by ourselves. I am pleased to announce that I have been awarded a sabbatical leave for the 1996-97 academic year. This is my thirty-first year to be a part of Mansfield and my fifth as Chairperson of the Music Department. My introduction to Mansfield began in the seventh grade with Carlton Chaffee as my band director, a Mansfield graduate who was an excellent musician and cared about all of his students. My long and exciting professional career at Mansfield has been the dream of my life. Many good things have happened in the last five years, but I am particularly proud of the new faculty who have been hired and our establishment of the music department scholarship benefit activities. During my sabbatical leave I plan to take several trips looking at programs in music education including schools in Hawaii and Guam. You may hear from me again, but this is my final message from the desk of the chair. Aloha. Very sincerely, Joyce C. Wunderlich Faculty Highlights Dr. Robert Amchin has been invited to present a workshop to the Steuben County (NY) music faculty on "Orff Schulwerk in the classroom" and he will present materials on general music education and percussion techniques for the Indiana Orff-Schulwerk Association in Terre Haute, Indiana. Highlights of the weekend included the Alumni Banquet in Manser on Saturday evening with inspirational and reflective thoughts shared by Thomas Jones '77, Bill Cutter '78, and Kimber Billow '69. Alumns also attended a jazz concert on Friday followed by a reception and three rehearsals on Saturday and Sunday before joining their voices in concert on Sunday afternoon. The alumni choir was one of the finest Dr. Dettwiler has had the privilege to conduct. Their enthusiasm, talent, and energy all combined to produce a truly inspiring concert. Letters from alumni reflect the same emotional and musical thrill. "There was great power in the coming together again with people from our past." "I still can't get the music and the laughter out of my mind! What a terrific event! Whether I was singing, reminiscing, getting acquainted with old friends, or making new ones, I experienced joy that I haven't felt in a long time." A tape of the concert is available for $9 (which includes postage). To order, mail your name , address, number of tapes, and a check payable to C.C.S.I. to Concert Choir Reunion, Butler 105, Mansfield University, Mansfield, PA 16933. Zona '85 Friends Of Music At Mansfield University The Music Department invites you to become a member of our donor group known as Friends of Music at Mansfield! We believe Mansfield deserves to be competitive with other institutions, private or state supported. Unlike earlier times, the state legislators have in recent years voted less and less financial support for its institutions of higher learning. Private schools, while advertising much higher tuition, give the strongest musicians large scholarships making it less probable that these students can afford to attend Mansfield. We too must offer scholarships to attract talented music majors. Please join our donor program and become a member of the Friends of Music at Mansfield. Levels of Giving $5000 and above $1000-$4999 $500-$999 $100-$499 Under $100 Donations of $100 or more include a Pass to the Scholarship Weekend, April 26-27-28, 1996, an invitation to the President's Reception following the Faculty Gala Concert and special announcements of musical activities throughout the year. ---------------------------------------------Detach and Return----------------------------------------------Name Phone / Street Address City State Zip Code My employer has a Matching Contribution Fund yes no Name of Company Address of Company My contribution is given in memory of: My contribution is given in honor of: I am interested in funding a special on-going scholarship.
