2013 ANNUAL REPORT
MONTGOMERY COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
A GIFT
of COMMUNITY
We
are thankful to live in a community where people
believe and demonstrate that it really is better to
give than to receive.
Because of that, we believe that
a stronger, more vibrant community is possible and
achievable. Montgomery County is blessed with generous individuals, families and organizations. It truly
is an honor to work with such kind and thoughtful philanthropists who give selflessly to our community.
Gifts to the community foundation over the last 10 years have exceeded $8 million dollars. Through these gifts and
prudent investment practices, the Community Foundation has returned over $10 million dollars to our community by
investing in our local nonprofits and students through our grants and scholarships. These grants have allowed us to
better our community and are a result of the trust that donors have placed in us to make their charitable goals a reality.
The following pages of this report tell the stories of the many gifts that we have had the privilege of being a
part of and how these gifts have impacted individual lives as well as our community. On behalf of the Board
and staff of the Community Foundation, thank you for giving us the opportunity to share in the joy of giving.

GIVING
is BETTER than
RECEIVING
During our second annual Essay Contest, in honor of
Community Foundation Week, we invited 8th grade students
from all three county schools to participate and write an essay
regarding the statement, “It is better to give than to receive” and
why they believe that to be true based on a personal experience.
Teachers from each school chose the top five essays and
submitted them for judging. The essays were thoughtful and
inspiring, making it difficult to choose.
Brianna Martin, 8th grade Southmont Jr. High student, was chosen as the top
winner! Brianna wrote a touching essay on a personal experience involving her
three young cousins who lost their father to cancer. During that difficult time,
Brianna and her family spent a lot of time with the children, showering them with
love and attention. In the end, Brianna was the one showered with love from a
little boy whose heart was broken from grief. As the overall winner, Brianna was
given a $100 MCCF grant that she could award to a local nonprofit agency of
her choice and she chose Mountie Mission. During a special assembly with all
Southmont 7th and 8th grade students, Brianna presented her grant to Diane
Cross, who was thrilled to accept on behalf of the agency. Principal Mike Sowers
was all smiles too when he accepted a $250 MCCF grant on behalf of the school.
Our second place winner was Elizabeth Swift, Tuttle Middle School. She wrote a
lively and engaging essay on one Christmas in particular when she spent weeks
working on the perfect gift for her mother. By the time Christmas arrived, she
was nearly beside herself with excitement over watching her mother unwrap
the gift. After the paper fell to the floor, Elizabeth writes, “All I remember after
that was the biggest smile I could ever have hoped for, and it warmed my heart
completely. I realized then that I had been doing Christmas wrong my whole life.
There is no real joy unless you can feel the joy of giving, even if it is just one gift to
one person. It truly is better to give than to receive.” Elizabeth’s love of animals
inspired her to direct her $50 MCCF grant to the Animal Welfare League and
board member, Anne Lovold, was delighted to accept the grant on their behalf.
Joy Shirar, Northridge, was our third place winner and she wrote an insightful essay
about her discovery of the difference between a want and a need. Her moment of
revelation came as she noticed the plight of a homeless woman and she thought
back to all the moments she had asked for unnecessary things. She writes, “Lately,
I have realized that giving is the best possible thing to do. I had to think what my
life would be like in someone as less fortunate. I then had a good quote come to
mind. It spells out JOY. The “J” means Jesus first. Next is the “O” which stands for
others second. Lastly is the “Y” which represents you last. Giving is better than
receiving in many ways.” A very fitting quote for a young woman named Joy! After
looking over the list of agencies, Joy knew right away she wanted to direct her $50
MCCF grant to Achaius Ranch and Nicole Wilson accepted the grant on their behalf.
“When one person gives, two receive; but when one person receives, another is left with
one less hug, one less smile, or one tear that wasn’t ready to fall. It is better to give
than to receive.” – Brianna Martin, Southmont Jr. High School.

A GIFT
of GRAIN
T
urning the soil, planting the seed, and reaping the harvest, are all part of a
process that is quite familiar to Jim McBee. Growing up on the farm, he learned to drive a tractor before he learned
to drive a car, and Jim still enjoys the feel of the tractor’s steering wheel beneath his hands as he helps out on the
family farm. The McBee farm, located east of Linden, is officially recognized as a Hoosier Homestead Farm; a farm
that has been continuously owned by a single family for 100 years or more. A barn that was built in 1902 still
stands on the 300-acre property.
Jim recently gave a gift of grain to the Montgomery County Community Foundation to establish the Jim and Kim
McBee Family Scholarship Fund. Choosing to give from the harvest off the land was an instinctive thing for Jim to
do. His family believes the biblical principle found in Proverbs 3:9 “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the
first fruits of all your produce.” Jim credits his parents, Jerry and Nancy McBee, for being excellent role models, and
instilling in him the values he holds close to his heart and that continue to govern his life.
Jim’s late wife, Kim, was diagnosed with cancer in 2010. She fought courageously, using her faith and humor as
shields against the disease, but it eventually took her life way too soon in October 2012. Prior to her death, Jim and
Kim had those hard, but necessary, conversations about what was important to them and the kind of legacy they
wanted to leave. Their sons, Chris and Josh, were raised and so the focus shifted to what they could do for others.
They discussed setting up endowments, rather than one-time gifts, because of their permanence. As Jim said,
“Endowments are forever, but they don’t just happen – you have to plan for it.”
When making decisions about bequests, Jim and Kim chose areas that were an integral part of their life. For
instance, their church has an endowment in Kim’s name, and income from that fund will help sponsor a spring
mission trip to Oklahoma to help victims of last year’s deadly tornados. This spring, their MCCF scholarship fund
will be awarded for the first time to help a North Montgomery senior go to that next level in their education.
Through these endowments, Kim’s legacy lives on – and someday, Jim’s will do the same. It all started with one
seed, planted deep within the soil of their hearts that grew into the concept of blessing others as they had been
blessed. And that seed, which became a gift of grain, will continue to produce long after the crops are gathered in
and the harvest has ended.
Jim is certainly no stranger to the concept of giving
back to his community. He serves on the MUFFY
Board, is a CASA volunteer, and is very active
in the Linden United Methodist Church, all in
addition to his job as the Director of Business and
Transportation for North Montgomery Community
School Corporation. Jim is pictured here with his
parents, Jerry and Nancy McBee.

A GIFT
of LEGACY

“We’re here for a very short time and when we’re
T
gone, memories tend to fade. This fund in their name
will ensure that the legacy of Samuel and Fern Boots
will continue to live on.” - Senator Phil Boots, speaking
about his decision to establish the Samuel L. and
Fern Boots Unrestricted Fund in loving memory of his
parents.
O
R
Y
Samuel Boots was a graduate of Wabash College, Class of 1933. In his younger years, he
worked at the Silver Shanty, a local hamburger place. He liked the little establishment so
Fern and Samuel Boots
much that he replicated it, down to the bar stools and counter, and had the building locally
pre-fabricated in brick. He then moved that building to Frankfort, Indiana and called it the
Brick Shanty, where he happily served up hamburgers until WWII made it difficult to keep the business going. One
day he just decided to board it up and then moved back to Crawfordsville, where he purchased an 80-acre farm
south of town and began farming. This was not new to him as he came from a farm family; however, his family lost
their farm during the Great Depression. In 1950, he became the Shell Distributor for this area, hired his brother, and
Boots Brothers Oil Co., Inc. was born.
Phil’s mother, Eva Fern Rice, was born and raised in Montgomery County. She and her sisters, known as the Rice
sisters, would sing on the local radio station on Sunday evenings and they were quite well-known for their talent.
Fern worked at a local brick factory until she married Samuel, and then she concentrated on raising six children.
Both of them were active in the New Market Christian Church where they enjoyed a close fellowship of friends. It’s
also said of Fern that she had a lively and engaging sense of humor, along with somewhat of a “lead foot” on the
accelerator. Unfortunately, that was way before seat belts were mandatory and Phil remembers being bounced
around a few times in the family’s station wagon!
Phil says that his sense of community service came through the example set by his dad. Samuel was very involved
in the Republican Party and served as County Commissioner for several terms. Phil took over the family business in
1975, served on the County Council for ten years, and then ran for office and was elected
as Indiana State Senator in 2006. Phil enjoys his role as Senator and says that even though
it can be frustrating finding ways to agree in political circles, he is immensely rewarded by
knowing he has some degree of influence. His greatest satisfaction is when he is able to
help one of his constituents cut through governmental red tape and find solutions.
Phil met his wife, Faffy, at Milligan College in Tennessee and they were married in 1970.
Phil was drafted into the Army and went to Vietnam, where he served a little over 13
months, with the 1st Air Calvary Division. After Phil came home, they eventually made
their way back to Montgomery County, where they settled down and raised two children,
Brian and Kavian. Today they are the proud grandparents of six grandchildren!
Phil and Faffy Boots
“Giving back to the community where you live, and where you have prospered, is the right thing to do. Everyone should do
that either through public service, through dollars, or both.” - Senator Phil Boots

The Harold and Linda Carpenter Fund
Harold and Linda Carpenter have made the close-knit
community of Darlington their home for most of their lives.
Harold continues to farm in the area and does electrical work on
the side. Linda worked locally as a bank teller for 15 years and
retired in 2008. They decided to establish this donor advised
fund so that they could make recommendations about grants
from their fund to areas that are of particular interest to them.
The Jim and Kim McBee Family Scholarship Fund
This is the first fund that was established with a gift of grain. It was a very
simple process for the grain elevator, the donor, and MCCF. This endowed
fund will benefit graduates of North Montgomery High School who
demonstrate motivation, character, ability and potential, and are not among
the top 10 of their graduating class. For the rest of Jim and Kim’s story,
please see page 4 of this Annual Report.
The Mike McCord Scholarship Fund
Mike McCord was just finishing his junior year at CHS when he was killed in a car
accident. His life, although way too short, represented a life lived to the fullest,
and packed with passion and promise. Mike was one of those rare people who
made everyone around him feel like they were the most important person and
he left an indelible impression on his peers, as well as adults. He possessed a
vibrant and enthusiastic spirit, along with uncompromising morals and integrity
shaped by a strong faith in God. Mike made a positive impact on people and in
a loving tribute to his enthusiastic spirit and faith-filled character, the family of
Mike McCord established the Mike McCord Scholarship Fund that will benefit
students of Crawfordsville and North Montgomery High Schools.
The John and Sandy Tidd Fund in memory of Ernest and Anna Tidd
John and Sandy Tidd have been residents of Montgomery County for over 40 years
and both are retired educators in the Crawfordsville Community School Corporation.
Serving on the MCCF Board of Directors has given John a unique perspective into the
areas of need in our community, as well as ways to address those needs. One way
that John and Sandy decided to become part of the solution to our community’s
needs was through the establishment of this donor advised fund in memory of
John’s parents. As a donor advised fund, they will have opportunities to make grant
recommendations in areas that are important to them. One day this fund will be
advised by their children - and John and Sandy’s legacy of philanthropy will continue
to live on from one generation to the next.

Women of Wisdom Fund, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: honoring Rev.
Chris Hotopp-Zachary, Mary Vi Leaming RN and Meda Lorton
Sharon O’Dell-Keedy, D.V.M and the staff at the Sugar Creek Animal Hospital created this fund in honor
and in memory of women whose wisdom and compassion touched many lives in Montgomery County.
Their first honoree was Carolyn Snyder, a founder of Christian Nursing Service. As a field of interest fund,
it will benefit areas of human service, including children with disabilities, youth, less fortunate citizens and
animal welfare. A gift to the WOW Fund can be used to honor or remember a special woman in your life for
any occasion!
The Roland Brooks and Helen Johnson Wynne Fund
This unrestricted fund will benefit Montgomery County in the areas of greatest
need and was established by Judy and William Wynne, children of Roland and
Helen Wynne. After living in the Chicago suburbs and then retiring to Florida,
Roland and Helen made the decision to return to Crawfordsville in 1990. The
many positive attributes of this area, such as a small, welcoming, neighborly
community, led to that decision. As part of the Wabash Class of 1937, Roland
was also happy to be back near the campus. Roland received his law degree
from Indiana University and spent the majority of his working years at General
Box Company as secretary and general counsel. Helen was a homemaker and well-known for her work with
charity. Judy said that the end of their years of life were full of good things here in Crawfordsville, and this
fund is a loving tribute to their memory.
James C. Patton Instrumental Music Scholarship
Pathway Fund
James Patton was known as the “Walking Band Director” at Southmont High
School - a title given to him after he walked home from the state competition in
1985. Mr. Patton passed away in January, 2013 and his family desired to establish
this fund in his memory so that his love of music would continue to live on. After
news of his death reached former students, one of them commented, “I can’t
imagine what high school would have been like without marching band. No group of
teenagers ever had a better band director.” This scholarship fund could not be a
more appropriate memorial for a man who loved music and who obviously made
an impact on the lives of his students.
Orval and Mildred Propst James Pathway Fund
Mildred James was a teacher at Waynetown for many years and as an
avid reader, always taught her students the importance of reading. Orval
was well known for his contracting skills and built many elite homes in
Montgomery County. His love of building homes and his concern for
others would often take him on mission trips where he would remodel
homes in the Mexican colonies near the border. Nancy Carpenter,
daughter, lovingly established this fund in their honor so that their lifetime
values will keep giving, and their legacy continue on forever, in the very
community where they have lived and loved so faithfully.

PATHWAY PLANS
A Pathway Plan is a planned giving agreement that allows you
to build a named fund over five years. In the past, an up front
minimum gift of $5,000 ($10,000 scholarships) was required
to establish a fund. With the Pathway Plan, you now can
establish the fund immediately with less than $5,000 adding

What Kind of a Legacy
Will you Leave?
We all have a desire for significance.
For many of us,
significance comes through creating a legacy during our lives
- something for which we will be remembered in the future. A
bequest is perhaps the easiest and most tangible way to leave
a lasting legacy to the people and charitable organizations
that mean the most to us.
A Bequest is a gift made through your will or trust. There are several ways to make a bequest:
•
•
•
•
Specific dollar amount
Specific asset
Percentage of your estate
Residue of your estate
For more information on how to create a lasting legacy through a bequest, please contact us or log on to our website
at www.mccf-in.org. We look forward to helping you!

$1.6 Million in Grants and Scholarships awarded in 2013!
The chart above shows the total grant dollars awarded since 1991 and sorts them by areas of interest. The numbers
can be staggering in size, yet their significance illusive at the same time. Grants come in all shapes and sizes, and
size alone by no means equals value. Consider that a modest grant of $4,000 to Athens Art can support both their
Annual Fall Salon and fund their strategic planning process, an exercise which sets their direction for years to come.
Or consider that a grant of $50,000 stands to become $75,000 once the Lew Wallace Preservation Society meets
the challenge match offered by the Jeffris Foundation.
“The border around the skylight is handpainted, designed by the owner. It consists of
implements of warfare in groups chained together. We see the shield, helmet, sword,
bugle, breastplate, etc….”
- Ella Kostanzer, January 1, 1900
Imagine the surprise, when in 2011, following Kostanzer’s description,
conservators at the Lew Wallace Study & Museum located a fife and drum in the
southeast corner of the dome and a section of chain which will someday again
link the elements of the military motif. Before the conservation and restoration
work can begin, the wiring in the building dating to the 1890’s must be replaced.
The cost of the electrical work, paint and attendant services is estimated to be
$300,000.

A GIFT
of HOPE
Poverty is a serious concern in our community. In 2013, we awarded a grant to
support a program called Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’ By World, which uses a
proactive approach to dealing with this issue. This national model addresses
situational poverty and the cycle of intergenerational poverty. It was brought to
Montgomery County through a collaborative effort of Montcares members, Wabash
Avenue Presbyterian Church and First United Methodist Church. Getting Ahead is
not your typical lecture or textbook course; rather, it is a process by which participants work together to identify the
causes of poverty, discuss the misconceptions of poverty, and then together, work on realistic goals that will help them
get ahead. Reverend Gary Lewis, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, and Dr. John Van Nuys, pastor of the
Presbyterian Church, facilitated the meetings.
The first session, comprised of 16 meetings, had 8 participants. At first, Gary and John were a little concerned about
whether or not the group would bond, or how long it might take to do so. Bonding is critical to the success of the
program so that trust can build among the group, which helps foster transparent and meaningful conversation. Both
were amazed when the bonding happened quickly and relationships began forming.
For those in poverty, or near poverty, a high value is placed on relationships – even sometimes to their detriment. It
is the one thing they possess, and so to consider letting go of any relationship is often difficult. For example, if an
impoverished person conquers an addiction to drugs or alcohol, they may realize some relationships are no longer
healthy to maintain, and yet find it hard to let go. One of the discoveries made in this session was the concept of
networking and building relationships that are mutually edifying.
For many in destitute situations, the tyranny of the urgent overrides all other thought processes. It is a great survival
technique, but leaves little room for planning beyond the immediate. In this session, ideas on how to plan for the
future took shape as participants were encouraged to think abstractly and beyond the here and now. Information that
was shared about available resources will also help in this endeavor.
These meetings were an illuminating experience for the facilitators as well. One of the biggest takeaways for them
was the multitude of factors contributing to poverty. Beyond the obvious, such as income, participants listed factors
such as broken families, substance abuse, family origins, lack of education, poor choices and spending habits, and even
prejudice. One of the most disquieting lists made by the group was one titled the mental model of poverty. On that
list were words such as trapped, ashamed, denial and depression. But possibly the most sobering word that feels like
a jagged piece of glass in your heart was this
one: hopelessness.
But hope began to form and grow as the
meetings continued. One participant said, “I
used to feel that I was swimming upstream and
struggling by myself. Through these meetings, I
see that I am not alone, and that is comforting.
I constantly think about the concepts we
studied and the issues we discussed and that is
helping me become more self-sufficient.” And
so where once hope was hard to see, it now
blossoms with possibility as these graduates
understand that they can indeed get ahead.

“Going Green” was the theme for 2013 Community
Engagement Grants. Green efforts take on many
shapes and forms and have far reaching benefits.
According to the Indiana Department of Environmental
Management, Hoosiers generate approximately 8 million
tons of municipal solid waste every year. By exercising the
three Rs, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” we can save energy and
natural resources and reduce pollution.
Grants of $1,000 each were awarded to 12 agencies during 2013
for projects which were ecologically friendly.
Green in ‘13 recipients were:
Women’s Resource Center - Oak Hill Cemetery - Lew Wallace Preservation Society
NICHES Land Trust - Boys & Girls Club - Habitat for Humanity - Youth Service Bureau
Red Cross - Historical Society - Athens Arts - Pam’s Promise Transitional Housing
Crawfordsville High School’s Transportation Systems Class
According to Purdue Extension resources, residences
with properly placed trees experience 27% lower costs
for cooling in the summer and 15% lower costs for
heating in the winter.
According to IDEM, ENERGY STAR qualified
CFLs and LEDs use up to 75% less energy
than incandescent light bulbs which are being
phased out in 2014. The CFLs last up to 10
times longer and the LEDs last up to 25 times
longer.
Recycling used aluminum cans
requires only about 5% of the
energy needed to produce
aluminum from bauxite; and,
recyling just one aluminum
can saves enough electricity to
light a 100 watt bulb for 3 1/2
hours.

Natural Resources
Oak Hill Cemetery restored 18 acres of land to native grasses and plants and will minimize future
disruption of the space by allowing only “green” burials.
NICHES conducted a clean up of Sugar Creek and removed invasive Garlic Mustard from the Bachner Nature
Preserve.
Montgomery County Historical Society planted three native Indiana trees on the grounds of the Henry S. Lane
Place.
Habitat for Humanity planted trees and shrubs to protect a newly constructed home from the elements, making
it more efficient to heat and cool.
Lew Wallace Preservation Society planted four new Magnolia trees on the grounds of the Lew Wallace Study.
The trees replace dead or aging trees believed to have been planted by Wallace himself.
The gardening project at Boys & Girls Club utilized a rain water collection system.
Energy Conservation
An old refrigerator and two washing machines were replaced with new Energy Star rated appliances at Red Cross
and Pam’s Promise respectively.
Fifty-one new LED bulbs replaced fluorescent bulbs at Athens Arts and will use about 85% less electricity.
Motion sensors were placed on restroom lights at the Boys & Girls Club helping out where kids sometimes forget
to turn lights out.
Reduce & Reuse
Fewer paper towels are being used at Women’s Resource Center since a hand dryer has been installed in the rest
room. And new moms are using cloth diapers thanks to the support and encouragement provided by Women’s
Resource Center. This reduces waste in our landfills and is budget friendly too.
Education and Innovation
Youth Service Bureau distributed family friendly educational materials promoting the 3 R’s.... Reduce, Reuse, and
Recycle at National Night Out.
A gardening project at Boys & Girls Club taught children about gardening and the use of rain water collection.
Students at Crawfordsville High School are using a Power Hub to control the amount of electricity generated
from different collectors, such as a windmill and solar panels and sync them to produce a DC current for a
recharging station.
So what did MCCF do?
Replaced old ballasts and changed nearly all of the lights in our building to energy efficient bulbs and took
advantage of a rebate offer from Energize Indiana, which further increased the monetary savings.
Ramped up our recycling efforts.
We think before we print and use the duplex feature to save paper when we must print.
All grants applications and scholarship applications are now submitted electronically.
Explored the use of Compressed Natural Gas for vehicles. Sunshine Vans will soon add three new vehicles to
their fleet which run on CNG.

of SERVICE M
ontgomery County is home to many brave and
selfless men and women who have served our country
in the military. At their own peril, at the risk of not
returning home to family and friends, they have
defended the freedoms we hold so dear. For one such young man, SPC Brian Bowman, a
medic with the United States Army, that risk became reality when he was killed January 3,
2010 in Ashoque, Afghanistan. Brian was tending to the needs of a wounded soldier when
insurgents attacked with an Improvised Explosive Device. Brian was a 2004 Southmont
graduate and he married Casie Carter in 2007.
Brian Bowman
The Brian Bowman Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by family and friends to honor his memory and to
ensure that his legacy will live on this community. One of the major contributors to his fund is a group who may not
have known Brian personally, but certainly understand his sacrifice and commitment to our country. The American
Legion Riders Post 72 have proudly sponsored the Brian Bowman Memorial Ride for the last three years and have
raised nearly $10,000 in donations for the fund. Larry Cooper, Director of the ALR Post 72, says that “it’s a whole
community thing” and that many local businesses and individuals have supported their efforts. The American Legion
Post 72 and the Brian Bowman V.F.W. Post 1431 are also major contributors.
The activities of the American Legion Riders are limited only by the imagination of their members, and they are much
more than a motorcycle club. The Riders are well known throughout the nation for their extensive charitable work,
which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children, hospitals, schools, veteran’s homes, severely
wounded servicemen and women, and scholarships. Whether one wears a golf shirt and slacks, or one wears a
leather motorcycle jacket, this group knows how to work together in the community for the common good.
In 2014, an award from the Brian Bowman Memorial Scholarship Fund will be given for the first time to a local
high school graduate. Some of the criteria stipulate that the student must attend an Indiana college and major in
a medical-related field. The application also includes a custom essay question about patriotism and how he or she
would use their patriotism to make our country better. The recipient will also need to demonstrate motivation, as
well as good character and citizenship. Each year as this scholarship is awarded, Brian’s sacrifice will be remembered.
Plans are already underway for the next Memorial Ride and Brian’s widow, Casie, truly appreciates the many hours
spent in preparation. We salute the American Legion Riders and their faithful commitment to growing Brian’s
scholarship fund. Every one of us is deeply indebted to Brian and all our servicemen and women who have faithfully,
honorably, and bravely defended and protected this great land we call home.

A GIFT
of EDUCATION
From the time Katie was a little girl, she had a keen interest in the medical profession. Early on, she aspired to be
a veterinarian; but on a mission trip to Ecuador in 2006, a chance encounter with a Physician Assistant gave her
a different idea. A few years later, an internship in a local doctor’s office confirmed her thoughts and the course
of her life changed. Katie graduated from DePauw in 2007 and then completed her Physician Assistant program
from the University of Findlay in 2009.
Katie grew up in Montgomery County and though she initially left Indiana to
go to graduate school, she knew that someday she wanted to return. Upon
obtaining her Physician Assistant license, Katie was offered a position at the
University of Cincinnati Medical Center and she, along with her husband,
James, settled into life in Ohio. But early in 2012, Katie was offered a position
in Lafayette, Indiana at the Lafayette Surgical Clinic as a Physician Assistant
in General Surgery and she accepted. James easily found employment in his
field as well and they returned back to the place where they both grew up.
Katie was the recipient of the 2003 MCCF Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded
through Indiana’s community foundations and is designed to raise the level of educational attainment in our state.
The winner must attend an accredited Indiana college or university and offers full tuition for four years, along with
a stipend for books and equipment. Katie was truly honored to receive this scholarship, but also deeply grateful as
it relieved her concerns about accruing tremendous college debt. The news about her award came just three days
after her mother passed away – a defining moment in the life of this young woman and a memory that remains
bittersweet for Katie.
A typical day for Katie includes making rounds with the doctors, patient care and testing, consulting, and being on
call in the trauma center. The most rewarding part of her job is also the most challenging – helping patients, and
their families, feel safe, confident and comfortable as they face situations that are very much out of their control.
An important discovery Katie made while doing this was just how much patient’s moods, and perceptions about
their illness, affect their outcome. She considers
it a privilege to help them understand the surgical
process as she tries to alleviate their fears and calm
their anxieties.
Katie is enthusiastic about her job and enjoys great
rapport with the other doctors and nurses on staff.
Her love of practicing medicine and her genuine
compassion for people is a perfect blend for her
life’s work. Katie Gentry is a great example of the
way the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship is
designed to work. Her education, earned in Indiana,
is now being used every day in the rural community
she calls home. Coming back, and now experiencing
the joy of giving back, Katie’s journey has come full
circle.

Successful Scholars
Back home again in Indiana
For many of us, spending all day in the clinic of a middle school tending to 6th8th grade students might be overwhelming. But not for Tuttle Middle School
nurse Amy Bales. She relishes the time spent with the students and connects
easily with them.
Amy, a graduate of Crawfordsville High School, always knew she wanted to
work in the medical profession. She dreamed of furthering her education and
went to Purdue University for two years. Life events presented a struggle for her to continue,
but she never gave up on her dream.
Years later, and with much encouragement and support from her family, Amy decided to try school once again to
obtain her nursing degree. By this time, she had four children, and as a single income family of six, the financial
pressures seemed quite daunting. She applied for and received the Edith V. Botts Non-Traditional Scholarship,
which benefits students who are not recent high school graduates. Amy considered this scholarship award as
an absolute blessing towards achieving her goal. Her credits from Purdue transferred and she completed her
Registered Nursing degree from Ivy Tech in two years.
As a school nurse, Amy sees anywhere from 60-100 students a day with needs ranging from cough drops to tube
feedings. But medical issues are only part of what goes on behind these clinic doors. Students will often wander in
searching for a listening ear as Amy has gained their confidence and trust. Sometimes during lunch, the clinic turns
into a place of refuge for those who might otherwise feel isolated in the cafeteria. Sometimes it is a safe place for
those who just need to talk about what’s going on at home and in their lives.
The most startling realization for Amy has not been the questions these middle school students ask, but rather the
magnitude of serious issues so many of them face. Before starting this job, she had no idea how many kids struggle
at home either because no one is there, or because no one is paying attention. She didn’t realize how many
children are basically raising themselves and are desperate for someone to care. Amy has even had students show
her their report card simply because no one is home to look at it.
Amy is by no means alone in her endeavors
to reach out to the students. She quickly
acknowledges that the Tuttle Middle School staff
is just “awesome” and they demonstrate heartfelt
compassion and concern for the students each
and every day. This only adds to her joy of
getting up in the morning and coming to work.
Amy has four children of her own, but as her
husband, Chad, points out, she really has 537 kids
at the end of the day! Sharing in the joy of giving
one moment at a time to one student at a time,
Amy delights in saying, “I absolutely love my job
and can’t think of anything else I’d rather do!”

MCCF Annual Report 2013

Breezy, brisk and beautiful! The weather cooperated and it turned out to be a gorgeous, crisp
fall afternoon for our 5th annual Denim & Diamonds event, Saturday in the Park. Gathering
at the South Shelter in Milligan Park, over 170 guests were treated to great music provided by
him&her and delicious appetizers by Bon Appetit. Our guests were given the opportunity to
view firsthand some of the grants awarded to our local park and recreation department: The
Skate Park where demonstrations were given by local skateboarders; Splash Zone, the new
water play area near the swimming pool; and Sunshine Van Garage, which houses vans that
provide transportation for our elderly and handicapped citizens.
An afternoon in the park must require some play – so cornhole boards were available for some
lively cornhole interaction! These beautiful boards were not your ordinary cornhole boards;
they were constructed and painted by local volunteers. At the end of the evening, these
boards were available to buy through a silent auction. Our board builders were Fred Dennison,
Tom Jent and Lyle Sanders, and our local artists were Kelly Barton, Mary Lou Dawald, Elizabeth
Lincourt, J.D. Minch, Anne Viray Sipahimalani and Jeff Neal. Sally Ray also volunteered to make
the cornhole bags which coordinated with the beautiful boards.
Our Denim & Diamonds event is never complete without a mouthwatering meal at the Country Club prepared by Chef Jeff. Food was served
picnic style, complete with baskets, and even the dessert was fun as we
roasted marshmallows at the S’mores Bar! And in keeping with the tradition
of our event, guests were encouraged to bedazzle and embellish their t-shirts and we had
some clever and cute creations to judge! The winners of the t-shirt contest were: Terri Cravens,
Mary Taylor, Jon Dantzig, Jodi Walker, and Emily Saidian. Sally Evans and Suanne Milligan were
honorable mentions.
We are so grateful to all our generous sponsors who helped make this event possible: NUCOR
Steel, Capital Cities, Bon Appetit, Wabash College, Mutual Wealth Management, Kirtley, Taylor, Sims, Chadd &
Minnette, P.C., Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health, Crawfordsville, Tipmont REMC, Lafayette Bank & Trust, Pace Dairy,
Halderman Farm Management, F.C. Tucker West Central, Sennett Farms, Tri-County Bank & Trust, Estep Burkey
Simmons, LLC, Puritan Water Conditioning, Collier, Homann & Perkins, LLC, Johnson Williamson LLC, Brian Keim’s
Lawn Service, Davidson Greenhouse, Janet Rucker, D.D.S., Stephen Akers, Architect, LLC, Top Line Athletics, and
Brenda Taylor. And to everyone who contributed in any way to help make our 2013 Denim & Diamonds another
great event – your generosity through time and talents is so deeply appreciated. To all our guests – thank you so
much for joining us and we hope that your Saturday in the Park was memorable and fun!

A GIFT
A
of Volunteerism
highlight of the Montgomery County Community
Foundation’s Annual Meeting each year is the naming of the
“Volunteer of the Year” and the “Peggy Herzog Youth Volunteer
of the Year.” Local nonprofit organizations are invited to submit
nominations for the award and after careful review the executive
committee makes their selections. With 13 outstanding nominees, each making significant contributions to their
respective organizations, the choices were difficult to
make.
Bill Doemel was selected as the winner of the 18th annual
MCCF Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his service
to the Montgomery County Free Clinic. Bill joined the
Christian Nursing Service Board in 2006. He found that
the program which had been in existence for 40 years was
now presented with tremendous challenges. Dr. Keith
Baird, volunteer physician for the clinic, was retiring and
the CNS location was no longer adequate. CNS was facing
a grim future. Couple these challenges with the fortuitous
presentation by Dr. Richard Gunderman, Wabash class of
’83, on medical philanthropy and now Bill was inspired
and determined to find a way to provide medical
services to the needy in Montgomery County.
Bill Doemel accepting VOY Award from MCCF President John Tidd
After studying the needs in Montgomery County and
examining the data, he discovered Volunteers in Medicine. Confident a VIM clinic could be possible in Montgomery
County, he next sought support from the medical community and he found a partner in Dr. John Roberts. Roberts
commented, “Bill sought my advice on the feasibility of such a clinic and has been relentless in planning its
implementation. He has immersed himself in the language and business of medicine and has become very wellversed in what it takes to develop and run and free medical clinic.” A successful grant proposal to North Central
Health Services resulted in a 3:1 matching grant for which they had to raise $300,000. With that goal completed
ahead of schedule, the doors to the Dr. Mary Ludwig Free Clinic opened in August. A check in the amount of $1,000
was presented by MCCF President John Tidd to Montgomery County Free Clinic in honor of Bill’s volunteer service.
Peggy Herzog worked for many years as the Drug Prevention Educator
for the schools, working with groups such as Youth to Youth, D.A.R.E. and
PRIDE, to name a few. Upon her retirement, a group of colleagues and
many others established a fund here at MCCF to honor her work. An
advocate of developing leadership in our youth, Peggy Herzog has elected
to direct the income from the fund to support an annual Youth Volunteer of
the Year Award.
Abby Williams and Peggy Herzog
Abby Williams, a senior at North Montgomery, and PEER mentor since her
freshman year, was named as the 2013 Peggy Herzog Youth Volunteer of
the Year. Diane Sparks, PEERS Director, finds her extremely reliable, and
always prepared for the presentations. Her conviction to the principals
of PEERS is genuine and she truly desires to help others see the wisdom
in avoiding risky behavior. The PEERS Project received a $500 gift in her
honor. The foundation appreciates all of the volunteers nominated as well
as those who took time to nominate them. Our community is fortunate
to have so many kind and caring individuals, willing to share their time and
talents to benefit others.
