station/local
facility key
Tickets can be purchased
in advance or on the day
of travel from any staffed
station ticket office
or self-service ticket
machines. Stations with
a ticket office have the
symbol in this guide.
You can also buy tickets in
advance over the internet
(see links page). If your
local station does not have
a ticket office, or if the
office is closed you may
buy tickets for immediate
travel from the conductor
on your train.
What type of tickets are available?
• Anytime – Fully flexible
Valid any time, any day, any train, any operator. These are aimed at business travellers and are
fully flexible but more expensive. These can be purchased on a ‘turn-up-and-go’ basis.
• Off-peak – Fully flexible outside rush hours
Valid on any train any operator, any day, any time except on Monday-Fridays before about 09:30.
They are also not valid for trains leaving London 15:00-19:00 Monday-Friday. These types of tickets
cannot be purchased on the train where there is a ticket office or ticket machine available.
• Advance – When you know exactly when you’re travelling
Airline-style cheap tickets, only valid on the train you’ve booked, limited refunds, limited
change of travel plans allowed. Ticket must be booked by 18:00 the day before travel. These
types of tickets are available on the internet up to 13 weeks in advance and the cheapest
tickets can sell out quite quickly – particularly for journeys to London.
• Railcards
There are a range of ‘railcards’ available which offer discounts of up to 1/3 off the cost of travel.
These include family, 18-25, disabled, senior and armed forces railcards. You can apply for
these railcards at any staffed station.
• Season Tickets – for regular travellers
Season tickets are available for periods between 1 week and 1 year. They offer very good value
for people who travel almost every day, especially if you need to travel during peak hours. The
first time you buy a season ticket you will need to take a passport-sized photograph of yourself
to a station ticket office. Only 1 week season tickets are available on board the train.
How do I find my local station?
All good maps will show the locations of railway stations – check the guide to symbols at the
front of your map. In this guide you will also find a list of local bus services that stop near each
station, as well as the post-code of each station should you use a sat-nav device. In the guide
if you see the symbol, it means that there is free parking available at the station.
indicates a pay-car-park is available.
As you approach your local station you will see the national rail logo (as shown in the
picture above left) on direction signs to the station. You will see a large version of the logo at
the station itself (as shown in the picture above right).
What do I do when I get to the station?
Arrive at the station in good time if you need to buy your ticket and find the correct platform
to wait for your train. At smaller stations, there will be a sign to tell you the direction of travel
from each platform. At larger stations you may need to check information screens to find the
correct platform. At larger stations there will normally be staff around the station who can
also help you find your train.
Once you have found out which platform your train is using, proceed there to wait for your
train. If you have to cross the railway tracks, make sure you look both ways and take note of
any safety information. If the line is clear, cross quickly and carefully – there may be a gap
between the crossing and the rails where small objects like high heels can become caught.
What do I do while I wait for my train to arrive?
In this guide you will find information on the facilities for each station, such as café, toilets
and waiting rooms. There are normally seats on each platform as well. Whilst waiting on the
platform, make sure you stay well back from the platform edge, as fast trains may run past
the station without stopping.
What do I do when my train arrives?
When the train arrives, let other passengers off the train first. You can then
board at any carriage and choose an empty seat. If you are travelling with a
bicycle, or if you require assistance, you should board at the rear of the train, as the conductor,
who will be able to assist you, is normally at the end of the train.
On some long-distance trains, seats can be reserved free of charge when booking your ticket.
These are identified with a reservation ticket displayed above the seat. This is a good idea as some
services (particularly on the Renaissance Line and the Monarch Line) can become quite busy.
The display board on the front of the train will show the train’s last stop. So if you’re
travelling to a destination in the middle point, it helps to know what is the final destination
of your train.
The map in the centre pages of this guide may help as it shows the stations along the lines
calling in Lincolnshire.
How do I find my seat reservation?
On long-distance trains a letter usually identifies the different trains’ carriages so it is easier
to identify which carriage your reserved seat is located in. The carriages are arranged in
alphabetical order, but sometimes the carriage at the front of the train will be letter ‘A’ and
sometimes it is the carriage at the rear end of the train that will be letter ‘A’.
Trains do not stop for long at each station, so if you are unsure of which carriage to join, it
is better to board the train quickly at any point and walk through the train to find your seat.
The on-train staff will be happy to help you if you ask them.
What do I do once I’ve got on the train?
Once you’ve found a seat sit back and relax and enjoy the journey. The train’s conductor
will pass through the train and inspect your ticket and on some trains there may be a
refreshment trolley passing through the train serving drinks and snacks.
If you require the toilet during your journey there are facilities located on the train.
If you are travelling with luggage, there are luggage racks located throughout most trains.
There will also be some space for smaller items above your seat. On quieter trains, you
can also leave luggage in the seat next to you, although should your train get busier it is
common etiquette to move your belongings to allow other passengers to sit down.
If you have any queries about your journey, the conductor will be able to advise you
– including information about onward connections.
Some early morning and late evening trains will be very quiet, and if you have concerns
about travelling alone, it is a good idea to sit near the back of the train. This is where the
conductor is generally located, who will be able to provide assistance, should you need it.
What happens when I get to my destination?
As the train approaches a station the conductor will make an announcement to tell you
which station you are now arriving at. If this is your destination, gather all your belonging
together and make your way to the train doors. Remember – trains do not stop for very long
at each station. Once the train is stationary leave the train by the nearest exit and mind the
gap between the train and the platform – there can be a considerable step down.
If you have to cross the tracks to leave the station, wait for your train to pass first, otherwise
you will not have a clear view of the tracks.
As you leave the station the station assistant may wish to inspect your ticket - so keep your
ticket and any passes handy.
At most stations you will be able to find local area information just outside the station, and
many also have directional signs for pedestrians.
What public transport is available when I get off the train?
Buses
If you need to make a bus journey after you get off your train, this can often be added onto
your train ticket under a scheme known as ‘Plusbus’. You can find out about Plusbus by
visiting www.plusbus.info or you can ask at your local staffed station.
Taxis
www.traintaxi.co.uk is an excellent website with up to date phone numbers for taxi firms
local to each UK railway station.
You can also call 118-TAXI (118-8294) to be connected to local taxi operators for any
railway station.
What do I do if I want to make a comment about my journey?
At all staffed stations you will be able to pick up a comment card, or you can visit your train
operator’s website (see the links page at the end of this guide).
If your journey has been delayed, you may be entitled to a full or partial refund on your
ticket – information can be found on the comment cards and websites. You should note
however that such refunds are provided in rail travel vouchers.
Remember though, train operators like to know when your journey went well, as well as
any problems you may have encountered. Many rail operators also operate a staff award
scheme, and if someone has been particularly helpful to you, you can let the train company
know in your comments.
Castle Line
Have you remembered to…
Check your train times. Remember, it’s a good idea to check the final destination of your trains, as it is this destination displayed on the front of the train.
Decide which ticket is best for you.
Work out your route to your local station. The line guides may help.
Make sure you arrive in plenty of time.
Find your platform and wait for your train to arrive.
Let other passengers off the train, step on board your train and find a seat.
Sit back, relax and enjoy your trip. Keep your tickets handy.
Listen out for the conductor’s announcements.
Make sure you’re ready to get off when your stop is announced.

Once the largest fishing port in the world, now home to the largest shopping centre in
Lincolnshire, Freshney Place. A trip to the busy docks to see the fish for sale is a reminder of
Grimsby’s past and many family businesses still thrive today. Take a step back in time to see
the harsh realities of life aboard a deep sea trawler at the National Fishing Heritage Centre. If
you like your day to be full of atmosphere, hustle and bustle and like a bargain, head down

Newark-on-Trent is an attractive market town situated along the river Trent. It offers you a
wealth of history, interesting buildings and museums. You will discover a lovely cobbled
market place on which busy markets are held. Many architecturally beautiful buildings can
be found around the square. The Millgate Museum will offer you a glimpse of Newark’s
social and working life in the 19th and 20th centuries among its period streets, shops and
rooms. Newark is a warm and friendly town and has lovely shops and excellent eating
places. It is renowned for its international antique fairs, and is a short bus ride from
Southwell, a charming village which, with its famous minster is technically a city. Newark

Sheffield is the fourth largest city in the UK and with 150 woodland areas, 50 public parks,
and the Peak District just a short drive or bus ride away, Sheffield is arguably the UK’s
greenest city! Sheffield is home to the largest theatre complex outside of London and the
largest all-season ski village in Europe. Just a short tram ride from the city is Meadowhall,
with 300 stores, a cinema and complex dedicated to eating it is a great day out and is
easily accessible by train. Weston Park Museum is located just a mile from the city centre,
and showcases exhibits revealing Sheffield’s long and vibrant history. There are animated
displays and creative opportunities for children, as well as exhibitions exploring Sheffield
through the ages. The Old Queen’s Head, a pub by the bus station, is the oldest commercial
building in Sheffield. Over five hundred years old, with timbered walls and an engraving of
local legend ‘Spring Heeled Jack’ in one of the uprights, the pub is well worth a visit.

Worksop & Sherwood Forest
Worksop is a thriving market town located at the northern edge of Sherwood Forest in
Nottinghamshire. There are regular open-air markets including a monthly farmers’ market
and other popular events such as Continental Markets. If nostalgia is your thing, Mr
Straw’s House, a National Trust property which unchanged for the past 60 years offers a
true glimpse into the past. If it’s the great outdoors that you are after the limestone gorge
honeycombed with caves at Cresswell Crags tells a fascinating story of life during the last Ice
Age and the acres of parkland, farmland and woods of the National Trust’s Clumber Park are
both only a stones throw away.

At the heart of Nottingham City Centre is the Old Market Square, refurbished in 2007 to
include a large water feature, which consists of numerous fountains and gushing rapids.
To the south of the square shopping streets lead their way into the Broadmarsh shopping
centre. Beyond the shopping centre lies the canal which is a pleasant area full of cafes
and restaurants. Northwards from the square more major shopping streets lead to the
Victoria Shopping Centre and to an entertainment quarter home to the Theatre Royal and
Nottingham Playhouse. Hockley is a cosmopolitan district of Nottingham with a mix of
independent retailers that celebrate individuality and style, and offer a more bohemian
vibe. The city boasts a real range of shops, offering numerous designer stores alongside the
usual high street brands.

Skegness is Lincolnshire’s premier seaside resort with a six mile long sandy beach and a
well known mascot The Jolly Fisherman. Between the beach and the promenade, there are
acres of beautiful gardens where visitors can explore, relax, or soak in the sunshine on a
warm summers day. At the North end of the promenade visitors will discover Natureland
Seal Sanctuary and tropical gardens, and numerous other superb attractions. There really
is something for everyone to do here, from shopping in some great high street stores and
traditional souvenir shops, to bowling, crazy golf, bowls or a good old British walk in some
of the county’s most amazing surroundings.

Boston
Boston is an historic and attractive market town, its most notable landmark is St.Botolph’s
Church, more commonly known as Boston Stump, whose high tower is seen for miles
around. The market, held on Saturdays and Wednesdays in the Market Place and also on
Wide Bargate on Wednesday, is a worthwhile experience. Explore the town’s medieval street
pattern with two main streets following the river either side, smaller lanes and alleys run in
between making for a compact town where everything is accessible by foot.

Stamford
Birmingham
Stamford, ‘the finest stone town in England’, is in South West Lincolnshire on the River
Welland. Stamford stands in the southern part of Kesteven, Lincolnshire, and is renowned
for its historical, religious and architectural wonder. Most visitors are impressed by the
18th and early 19th century town houses, built during Stamford’s second great period of
prosperity in the stagecoach era.
The City has enjoyed a renaissance in the last few years arising from the renovation of its
historic areas and the creation of many new developments such as the world renowned
International Convention Centre and the National Indoor Arena. Birmingham became a focus
for the world’s eyes when it hosted the 1998 G8 Summit of world leaders, and on a slightly
lighter note, the Eurovision Song Contest.
Near the station is the exclusive George Hotel with fine boutiques and a great place for
afternoon tea. Here you may spot a portrait of one of Stamford’s famous historical figures
– Daniel Lambert – the fattest man in history, with a waistline of a staggering 112 inches!
From here begins the 88-mile long distance walking path, Jurassic Way which runs all the
way to Oxfordshire. Clearly it wasn’t here in Daniel’s time!

One of the jewels in Birmingham’s crown must be the canalside area in the heart of the city.
Known as Brindleyplace, it has a wide variety of bars and restaurants, as well as modern
office spaces, hotels, the Crescent Theatre, and the National Sea Life Centre. The area has
gained international recognition with a recent ‘Excellence on the Waterfront’ award.
Cambridge
Cambridge is one of Britain’s most visited cities. The city is world famous for its University
and its ancient architecture, some of which dates back to the eleventh century. There are a
wide variety of attractions for visitors and many means of getting around. One of the nicest
ways to see the university buildings is a trip on the river Cam by Punt. Why not sit back and
relax while you are shown around the cities waterways. If you like a more active adventure
the most popular form of transport in Cambridge is by bike, which are available for hire all
over the city.

These bold new developments help to make Birmingham a city of exciting contrasts, since,
although it is a modern city, it is equally proud of its history and heritage. The city’s Jacobean
roots and Regency elegance are still evident in the architecture of its buildings, all adding to
Birmingham’s charm and character.

With over 270 stores, more than 30 restaurants and fast-food outlets and an 11-screen
cinema complex, a visit to Meadowhall is a great day out for everyone. The Centre is home
to major department stores and all your favourite high street names, as well as individual
designer boutiques, specialist shops and lots of fun for the children, with a crèche, outdoor

A short walk up the hill from Meadowhall will bring you to Wincobank, where you can see
the remains of a celtic fort, where it is believed the Ancient Brigantes tribe made one of the
last stands against the invading Romans. Or you can follow the River Don to find MAGNA, a

Ely
Set in the heart of East Anglia, the historic city of Norwich has everything you would desire
of a vibrant regional capital. Norwich is the most complete medieval city in Britain. It’s also
one of the top five places to shop. Explore the intricate network of winding streets and over
1,500 historic buildings, from the splendor of the Norman Cathedral and Castle to charming
Elm Hill with its timber-framed houses. Museums, galleries, theatres, concerts, cinema, a
buzzing nightlife and a year round programme of festivals.
Ely is nestled in the Fen countryside in East Cambridgeshire. Once home to Oliver Cromwell,
this small city is full of charm and beauty. The city retains many historic buildings, one of
the most magnificent cathedrals in England and lots of small winding shopping streets. The
waterside at Ely is wonderful, here you can enjoy a boat trip, a riverside walk or visit the
neighbouring jubilee gardens. This beautiful city really offers something for everyone.

Norwich is dominated by its magnificent cathedral, boasting the largest cloisters in England,
the second tallest spire in the country and an amazing 1,200 stone roof bosses. The recently
refurbished market, which stands below the Castle, is the largest open-air market in the
country with stalls selling a wide range of goods, 6 days a week.
The 12th century Castle is one of the finest Norman secular buildings in Europe. Today, as
the county’s principal museum, it is packed with treasures. Its resident collections are of
national importance and visiting exhibitions include works from the Tate. Norwich has over
30 medieval churches within the city walls alone. Many still function as parish churches, but
others have been imaginatively converted to other uses.

Liverpool
All things which make Liverpool famous are here and open for visiting – the ‘Ferry Cross The
Mersey’, the Liver Building and of course lots (and lots) of Beatles memorabelia – including
the Beatles Museum and the former home of Sir Paul McCartney. You’ll even find public art
to the Beatles, including a statuette of Eleanor Rigsby.
If history is your thing, you can’t go wrong here with a wealth of maritime history, and much
of the central core being designated a World Heritage Site. A short ride by bus from the
centre and you could visit Knowsley Safari Park, or hop onto Merseyrail to visit Southport
– a victorian seaside resort returned to 19th century splendour.

Grantham
Grantham is a market town located along the course of the River Witham, amid the
limestone hills of Lincolnshire. The town is best known as the birthplace and childhood
home of former prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, and as the place where Isaac Newton
went to school. There is still evidence of its days as a coaching town – the Angel & Royal
is said to be the country’s oldest inn, where seven Kings of England have stayed since
1200. Just a short ride away is the National Trust property Belton House. Together with
a magnificent 1,000 acre landscaped park, a large adventure playground, the licensed
Stables restaurant and a well-stocked National Trust Gift Shop, Belton offers a great day out
whether you are looking for peace and tranquillity or lots to do!

Hull
Hull is an up and coming waterfront city which has lots to offer its visitors. Situated on the
banks of the River Hull and Humber, Hull has a rich heritage but also combines this with
new, vibrant and exciting family attractions. The Deep offers children and adults an insight
into life beneath the waves and has many activities to join in with around the centre. Hull is
also home to William Wilberforce and has a museum dedicated to his achievements.
The city has three main theatres. Hull New Theatre, which is the largest venue and features
musicals, opera, ballet, drama, children’s shows and pantomime. The Hull Truck Theatre
which is a smaller independent theatre that regularly features plays, and the Northern
Theatre Company which is also based in the city.
Hull is host to a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including the Humber
Mouth literature festival, which is an annual event and in the 2008 season featured writers
such as Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Lisa Appignanesi, Jonathan Miller, Christopher Reid and Janet
Street-Porter. The annual Hull Jazz Festival takes place around the Marina area for a week
at the beginning of August. This is followed by the Sea Fever Festival, an International Sea
Shanty Festival.
