Don Coulter, Chief Financial Officer

Coast Capital

Don is the chief financial officer of Coast Capital, Canada’s second largest credit union. He has over 20 years of experience as a financial executive, gained both in Canada and abroad. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a degree in

Mathematics and Economics and is a member of the Canadian

Institute of Chartered Accountants. Don serves as vice-chair of the board of the foundation at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and was voted by his peers to the Council of the Institute of Chartered

Accountants of British Columbia in 2011. In 2013 Don was selected as chief financial officer of the year by Business in Vancouver

Magazine.

Miquel Serrano, Director of the Brandery

FIRA Barcelona

Miquel is a marketing and branding professional accountable for a bi-annual fashion trade show for FIRA Barcelona where he has transformed the business in the toughest economic climate to hit

Spain. FIRA is a trade and convention organization with over 4.4 mm square meters of venues and a portfolio of 70 shows. Miquel holds an MBA as well as a masters in Marketing Management from

University Pompeu Fabra, an undergraduate degree in

International Trade from Academia Fontanella, and a design degree from Barcelona’s Escola d’Arts i Oficis. He has 14 years experience in the fashion industry, expertise in branding and social media, and speaks 7 languages.

Jiamei Bai, Director Business Transformation

Tree Island Steel Ltd.

Jiamei’s career has been spent in management and IT consulting.

She is currently responsible for the planning and implementation of strategic initiatives, Business Transformation and analytics. She has industry experience in banking, manufacturing, resources, utilities, as well as in the public sector. She is a Professional

Engineer, with an MBA from UBC, a MASc in biomedical engineering from UBC and a BASc in mechanical engineering from

University of Waterloo.

Gregor Kolb, Head of Operations Research

Tree Island Steel Ltd.

Gregor leads the newly created analytics group at Tree Island, responsible for the introduction and deployment of analytical techniques. He holds a B.Sc. in Econo-Physics from the University of Ulm, Germany and is a graduate of the Center for Operations

Excellence at UBC where he received his Master of Management in

Operations Research. Gregor’s other passion is sport – he won a

Silver Medal at the 2005 Junior Rowing World Championships.

Hart Mauritz, VP Business Innovation

BC Assessment

Hart is responsible for business innovation at BC Assessment, driving strategic initiatives to transform the company and achieve operational excellence. He is also responsible for customer strategy, process management, change management, quality assurance, and shared assessment and valuation services. He was previously a Partner in KPMG’s Management

Consulting practice leading the Strategy & Operations Service

Line in BC. Prior to that, he worked internationally at a top management consulting firm in Europe. Hart holds a master’s and doctorate degree in business administration.

Clayton Knight, Senior Manager, Financial

Advisory, Deloitte

Clay leads Deloitte’s Western Canada Analytics service line. His primary areas of focus are predictive risk modeling, and granular segmentation for a variety of industry applications including detection of fraud, waste, abuse, and capital project cost recovery. Clay also focuses on analytic mandates in support of key business transformation initiatives in the public insurance and workplace safety areas as well has public sector, financial services, telecommunications and lottery & gaming.

Clay holds a BCom and an MBA from Dalhousie University.

Andrew Hall, Senior Manager Analytics

Boeing Aeroinfo

Andrew is Senior Manager of Analytics at Boeing Canada –

Aeroinfo, an in-house IT and Software Development center. He founded and leads the Aeroinfo Advanced Analytics practice, a recognized Center of Excellence within Boeing, and is a solution strategy thought leader and airline consultant for Boeing’s

Digital Aviation business. Andrew has degrees in Engineering

Physics and Operations Research from UBC and previously worked at GE Transportation and the UBC Centre for Operations

Excellence.

Dale Lawrence, Director Quality, and

Process Improvement, Telus

Dale has been a Process Improvement professional for 10 years with London Drugs and TELUS with expertise in Lean Process

Redesign. Dale specializes in enterprise process transformation.

Dale is based in Burnaby office and supports a team of approximately 40 process improvement professionals across

Canada.

James has accountability for strategic planning, business transformation, procurement and corporate development at

Tree Island. He is a turn-around expert with experience in banking, real estate, retail, transportation, and manufacturing.

In addition, James teaches Finance at the British Columbia

Institute of Technology and sits on a not-for-profit board. James has a MBA from the Queen’s and bachelors from Simon Fraser.

Donald Stuart, Managing Director

UBC Centre of Excellence in Operations

Stuart engages industry to unite it with the enthusiasm of talented graduate students, the expertise of world class faculty in Operations Research and Analytics, and a strong professional staff to deliver valuable solutions to industry’s challenging operations problems. He has 15 years experience as a consultant effecting change through OR/Analytics solutions. He joined Sauder in 2007 where he oversees 8 to 10 COE Projects each year while teaching graduate courses. He earned a B.Sc. in forestry and a M.Sc. in forestry and operations research.

Jeff Adams, AVP Continuous Improvement

Canadian Pacific Railway

Jeff created CP’s lean transformation strategy and leads corporate-wide deployment. With over 29 years in leading line

Operations, Sales and Marketing, and in leading large-scale transformation, Jeff is passionate about sharing his learnings.

His expertise is sought out for addressing conferences in both

North America and Europe, and to advise CP’s customers and other organizations seeking successful transformation. Jeff’s achievements have earned him the Lean Sensei “Sponsor of the

Year” for 2009 and earned Canadian Pacific the INFORMS “Franz

Edelman Award” for 2003.

Gillian Richards, Senior Manager

Monitor Deloitte

Gillian has over 5 years of consulting experience alongside 10 years of industry experience helping financial institutions define and execute the customer strategy and business transformation efforts. Recent engagements have focused on customer data and profitability strategy, alongside the execution of key customer strategies including end-to-end definition of a Next

Best Offer program and customer-centric process design of key

Retail Banking customer interactions. Prior to joining Deloitte,

Gillian held several senior-level customer insight roles, including

Director, Customer Knowledge and Insights with Scotiabank.

About the Centre for Operations Excellence

The Centre for Operations Excellence (COE) is an internationally recognized operations research (OR) centre dedicated to providing value to business and academia through projects with industry and research on applied OR methods.

The COE also administers the UBC Master of Management in

Operations Research (MM in OR), a specialized 16-month program that provides students with an advanced education in business analytics and operations research.

The COE is dedicated to providing value to business and academia through projects with industry and research on applied OR methods. The COE has published many research articles and completed over 100 industry projects with major corporations in nearly every business sector. Some of these projects have been featured in the national media and have won best practice awards at OR conferences.
