The average life of an LED can be as long as 50,000 hours. Compare this to the 1,000-hour life of an incandescent bulb and the 8,000-hour life for compact fluorescents (CFLs). 4 5 8 | Be Light Years Ahead Industrial and Commercial Lighting Industrial and commercial lighting includes factories, office buildings, shopping malls, and retail stores. Facilities like these require component reliability, easy maintenance, and sustainable solutions to help reduce operating expenses and maintenance costs. Henkel bonding, lens sealing, surface treatment, thermal management and potting solutions can help. 1 5 2 3 2 4 1 Be Light Years Ahead | 9 Bonding and Sealing • Improved reliability by sealing housing against dust and liquids • Optimised costs in manufacturing by reducing manufacturing steps Potting – General and Transparent • Protect LED modules directly by ultra clear and UV stable potting • Fitting your process: potting with flexible cure times • Optimised dispense solutions and automation Thermal Management • Increase LED life span by lowering operating temperature • Easy maintenance though removable thermal management solutions • Optimised manufacturing by combining bonding and thermal management 1 2 Surface Treatment • Corrosion protection • Improved paint adhesion • Fast and low waste process Low Pressure Moulding – General and Transparent • Protect sensitive electrical components against water and dust ingress • Fast process time by instant curing • Based on sustainable raw materials 3 Did You Know? LEDs project light forward, while most other light sources emit light in all directions. This makes LEDs optimal for spotlights and floodlights. 4 5 10 | Be Light Years Ahead Consumer and Residential Lighting New and exciting designs are becoming even more important to d ifferentiate your luminarie in the consumer and residential market. The use of LEDs for residential and consumer lighting is growing as incandescent become obsolete and concerns remain over the safety and disposal risk of CFLs. Henkel bonding, thermal management, and potting products can help manufacturers realise their design a mbitions and build a better, more reliable and potentially lower-cost luminaire. 1 3 1 3 2 Be Light Years Ahead | 11 Bonding and Sealing • More design freedom by transparent bonding & joining different types of substrates • Optimise costs in manufacturing by reducing manufacturing steps Potting – General and Transparent • Protect LED modules directly by ultra clear and UV stable potting • Fitting to your process: potting with flexible cure times • Optimised dispense solutions and automation Thermal Management • Increase LED life span by lowering operating temperature • Easy maintenance though removable thermal management solutions • Optimised manufacturing by combining bonding and thermal management 1 2 3 Did You Know? LEDs can be switched on and off instantly and give off full strength immediately, unlike CFLs. 12 | Be Light Years Ahead Architectural Lighting Safety is paramount when it comes to swimming pool, deck and outdoor lighting. Henkel e.g. surface treatment, potting, and low pressure moulding solutions can help achieve a safe, reliable, watertight enclosure to ensure the integrity of underwater and weather-exposed lighting components. 5 2 1 3 1 4 Be Light Years Ahead | 13 Bonding and Sealing • Improved reliability by sealing housings against the elements • Optimise costs by reducing the number of manufacturing steps Potting – General and Transparent • Protect LED modules directly by ultra clear and UV stable potting • Fitting to your process: potting with flexible cure times • Optimised dispense solutions and automation Thermal Management • Increase LED life span by lowering operating temperature • Easy maintenance though removable thermal management solutions • Optimised manufacturing by combining bonding and thermal management 1 2 Surface Treatment • Corrosion protection and improved protection for external elements • Improved paint adhesion • Fast and low waste process Low Pressure Moulding – General and Transparent • Protect sensitive electrical components against water and dust ingress • Fast process time by instant curing • Based on sustainable raw materials 3 Did You Know? LED stands for light-emitting diode. 4 5 14 | Be Light Years Ahead Advertisement and Logo Lighting Illuminated advertisement and logos are an important element of the visual identity of your business. When used outside, they must withstand exposure to these elements while maintaining the high quality appearance of your design. In addition, the requirements of corporate design rules must be met, as for example displaying correct company colour tones. 1 3 2 5 1 3 Be Light Years Ahead | 15 Bonding and Sealing • More design freedom by transparent bonding • Improved reliability by protection against water ingress • Optimised costs by reducing the number of manufacturing steps Potting – General and Transparent • Protect LED modules directly by ultra clear and UV stable potting • Fitting to your process: potting with flexible cure times • Optimised dispension solutions and automation Thermal Management • Increase LED life span by lowering operating temperature • Easy maintenance though removable thermal management solutions • Optimised manufacturing by combining bonding and thermal management 1 Low Pressure Moulding – General and Transparent • Protect sensitive electrical components against water and dust ingress • Fast process time by instant curing • Based on sustainable raw materials 2 3 Did You Know? The standard unit of measurement that defines the output or brightness of an LED is called a lumen. The more lumens an LED has, the brighter the light. 5 16 | Be Light Years Ahead Dispensing Equipment For some jobs it is sufficient to dispense product directly from the bottle or tube onto the surfaces to be joined. In other cases, however, more precise and automated dispensing is required. In addition to the standard equipment available, Henkel can design and build equipment based upon customers requirements to provide unique application solutions. Hand-Held Applicators Loctite Hand-Held Applicators are ergonomically designed for hand delivery of Loctite adhesives and fluids directly from their original package. Whether pneumatic or manual, each item is designed for easy, clean, hand-held dispensing of fluids, to reduce waste and operator contact. The selection of a Loctite HandHeld Applicator is based on the product type, package size, and process requirements. Available for: • 1 Component Cartridges • 2 Component Cartridges 1 Light Curing Equipment Four major effects must be taken into consideration when designing a successful light cure application: emission spectrum of the cure system, light intensity, transmission properties of substrate and required cure characteristics. When enclosed together with LEDs during luminaire assembly, incompatible VOCs may degrade the light output performance, change the colour points and reduce the life span of LEDs. Incompatibility comes in varying degrees: some chemical materials are critical when in direct contact with LEDs but are fine when enclosed without being in contact with the LED (indirect contact - also referred to as proximity). Some materials, such as adhesives and sealants, may be critical during the curing process, but less so when fully cured. Cree® has defined a testing methodology to evaluate chemical compatibility. Many Henkel products meet the requirements set forth by Cree® and we are committed to continue systematically testing our products. This will help you select the right adhesive and sealant for your application and be assured that incompatibility will not become an issue for you. Chemical Compatibility to LEDs VOC Entry and Failure Mechanism Silicone Lens 1. LEDs are typically protected by an ultra clear silicone lens LED Chip VOC Enclosure, e.g. luminaire housing 2. When enclosed during luminaire assembly, some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may diffuse into silicone lens 3. Heat and photon energy discolor VOCs and reduce lumen output or may cause failure of LED Be Light Years Ahead | 19 Performance testing Comparison of Henkel LED Compatible Products on Cree® Test Boards Photo 1: LEDs utilising Henkel compatible products Photo 2: LEDs without Henkel compatible products Did You Know? In some cases discoloration of LEDs by incompatible VOCs may be reversible when the enclosure around the LED is removed.
