ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER

SPECIAL EVENTS

WWF(World Wildlife Fund) invited Australians to walk, bounce or hop back into the wildlife spirit this June, with the return of Wild Onesie Week 2016. WWF challenged

Australians to head off to work and school dressed head-to-toe as an animal during

WILD ONESIE WEEK (which included World Environment Day on June 5).

MWPS Senior Environment Team challenged our school to participate in this event by holding a WILD ONESIE DAY on WEDNESDAY 1 st

JUNE. Students dressed in wild onesies, or dressed like an animal on the day. A GOLD COIN donation was requested and we raised $800. The funds raised will go towards our sponsored animals (which include koalas, a bilby, an orang-utan, a Tasmanian devil and a now critically endangered Leadbeater’s possum) .

See our sponsored animals page on the

Sustainability Blog http://sustainabilityatmwps.global2.vic.edu.au/our-animals/ for more details of our animals.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Last week was very busy, with sport happening throughout all areas of the school and I was very impressed with each event.

Our Year 4-6 Cross Country team competed against 7 other schools in the Mulgrave District Competition at Norton’s Park, finishing second to Mount View Primary School.

Norton’s Park is a difficult course, as the competitors commence the event running up a hill and also finish running back up the same hill. At least the weather was fine and we had some excellent individual results.

All of our students competed to the best of their ability and I am very proud of the manner in which they represented our school. In addition to thanking

Ms Kemp, I would also like to acknowledge the fantastic work that teachers do across all of the schools involved in our sports district to ensure these events are a success for our students.

From the cross country, I made my way back to school where former World Number 8 tennis star Alicia Molik and her Tennis Australia team were conducting a tennis clinic for our Year 2 students. The school was buzzing with bouncing balls and throughout the day all year levels had some form of contact with Alicia’s expertise and wonderfully engaging personality.

Thanks to Merryn Ashcroft for organising this amazing event for our school.

Merryn and I then proceeded to Huntingtower

Swimming Pool where Merryn was organising the Year

2 Swimming Fun Carnival. I congratulate Merryn on the organisation of such an outstanding event and it was a joy to see the smiles on the faces of our students. Wow-what a busy day!

Last Friday, our Year 6 students competed against

Mount View Primary School in Interschool Sport and I headed to Pinewood Reserve to support Mr Boyle and the football team. The boys worked well together to finish with a great winning result of 50 -1 against my old school, on my old home ground from yester year when I played junior football.

BEREAVEMENT NOTICE

It is with great sadness that we inform our community of the tragic sudden loss last Saturday of Ralph Deszcz. Our thoughts are with his wife Helen and daughters Alison and Georgia, along with other family and friends. Ralph has had a long association with Mt Waverley Primary

School, firstly as a parent when Alison and Georgia both attended the school and for several years as the school’s

‘handyman’.

Ralph has been a staunch supporter of the school, participating in many events as a parent and being a great advocate of the school within the community. As our ‘handyman’ he liked nothing better than to be presented with a tricky maintenance challenge and could be counted on to be innovative in finding solutions. His contributions to the school’s maintenance program are extensive. He was always only a phone call away. His cheerful, individual approach and enthusiasm when asked to assist the school will be greatly missed.

Information regarding a public memorial will be sent out as soon as it is available.
