Any urgent information was sent home via note and posted on our website and/ or our Facebook Group. I hope you were able to have some fun ‘family’ times between Friday October 30th and Thursday th November 5 when the children returned to school. I have certainly heard some stories about fun family holidays and visits to relatives, the movies and the Zoo, among other places. What a wonderful ‘family’ story about Michelle Payne was on Cup day. There has been a lot on our plate since I last wrote. Grade 6 Fun Fields Excursion and Graduation The teachers have been working hard on the student reports during this time and we had a very successful day of Professional Learning on Maths taken by Professor Di Siemon from RMIT on Wednesday November 4th. We all learned more about the teaching of Maths, how students learn and the misconceptions they can have. Research, which is current and evidence based, is building our capacity as teachers continually. As a staff we are and have to be life-long learners! We have successfully completed our School Peer Review. There is much to celebrate and of course much to focus on in the future! As Principal, I am incredibly proud of all our staff, students and parents and carers VISION Our vision for Morang South Primary is to become a vibrant learning community where all members are challenged and empowered to strive for and celebrate personal excellence and continuous growth. The children will become positive, compassionate, able, creative, confident thinkers, and life long, socially responsible learners equipped to thrive in and shape the future of our evolving global society. for the focus on improving our school and student outcomes during the last Strategic Plan period. At MSPS it is truly a team effort! Thank you all. I’d like to particularly thank our School Improvement Team (SIT), whom I thoroughly enjoy working with and learning from not only each fortnight when we meet but on numerous other occasions, consisting of Sandi Young, Jess Barden, Kaye McLaren, Mel Tollit, Stef Tigani and Vanesa Trpcevski who worked tirelessly on our self-assessment so that it truly reflected our school and gave us a wonderful framework for our discussion on the Review day. Sandi’s outstanding presentation of our data also contributed enormously to the day. Thank you, Sandi. Thank you also, to Hayden Wardrop and Chantelle Armet and the SIT team who joined the school reviewer and peer reviewers and our School Council President, Emma on the day. The report will be presented to School Council at the November meeting the last Wednesday in November, then placed on our website to be shared with our community. One of our peer reviewers wrote “Thank you ...for the opportunity to participate as a peer reviewer. It was great to be part of such stimulating and high level discussion. I would also like to congratulate the SIT team for the work undertaken to prepare the selfevaluation which I believe is the foundation of a meaningful review. The capacity to self-reflect and to recognise achievements and opportunities for improvement is a sign of the real maturity of an organisation…….” The other Peer Reviewer wrote: “……….listening to all the wonderful changes MSPS has made over the last few years to improve both teacher capacity and student learning outcomes. You have all put so much work into school improvement and your passion to continue to do so is also noticeable. Reading the report highlighted the wonderful things currently in place at MSPS that were shared by the SIT team on the day. The report also reflects the detailed discussions of the day with several suggestions as to how MSPS can continue to move forward. Well done to you both, your lovely staff and the school community, who all work together to make MSPS the wonderful place it is. Good luck on the journey ahead and I look forward to hearing more about your future plans for MSPS and your achievements along the way. about the ‘Curiosity and Powerful Learning’ sessions we have been having for the past two Friday afternoons. If not, I would encourage you to ask them about the sessions. These sessions are giving our children further opportunities to focus on and research their interests. This is a trial with a view to us implementing a more comprehensive program in 2016. Watch out for the next instalments on our progress! We have two more sessions to go; next week and the week after. There is none this week as the 1/2s are having an excursion to IMAX and the Museum. A day which I am sure will inspire their curiosity! To foster and support smooth transitions between grades, we run an intra-school transition as well as our pre-school to school transition and year 6 to 7. These programs have commenced already this term. They prepare our students for the next phase of their educational journey. The grade 6 students are working on their graduation preparation while the rest of the school are working in their Curiosity and Powerful Learning groups. These ‘Curiosity’ groups have been organised to help support our extensive intra-school transition program (grades 1 to 2; 2 to 3; 3 to 4 and 5 to 6). The Preps and 1s are working together as our prospective grade 1/2s; the 2s and 3s are working together as our prospective 3/4s; and the 4s and 5s are working together as our prospective 5/6s. Diana Gevaux and Tamara Walters our two Science teachers, Sandi and I are all involved. This enables us to have smaller groups. Consequently the groups do not represent the actual grades the children will be in for 2016 just their year level. Foundation (Prep) Transition Our Foundation students for 2016 have had at least one session, with the mainstream students having had two. They appear to be enjoying themselves, getting to know their school and each other while participating in a variety of activities with our teachers. We hope no one has missed out on transition but we are Emma Dickens who, as School Council President, was the parent representative on the Panel for our review thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was thrilled with the way our staff conducted themselves and talked about our achievements as a school community and our future direction. We thank Emma very much for giving up her day to join us and for the valuable contributions she made. I am sure many of your children have been telling you still taking enrolments for our 2016 Foundation (Prep) classes. Please inform family, friends and neighbours that if they have a child starting school next year and would like them to come to our school to enrol them now so they can participate in the remaining transition sessions. We have a number of enquiries about places in our school for 2016 along with over 80 Preps. It is important for us to have accurate enrolment numbers for children attending our school in 2016 so that the best possible class structures and class sizes can be organised. As always, our children, their learning and development, will remain our top priorities. Please contact us to let us know if your child/children will not be attending MSPS in 2016. Thank you to those families who have done so already. There are some wonderful stories of new employment, new houses and schools now in closer proximity. We will miss you but wish you all well in your new ventures. The 3/4 TBall team was looking forward to their Gala Day. Unfortunately it had to be cancelled due to the stormy weather. In her diligent and resilient fashion Sandi is looking for some alternative options. She is unable to find a whole day at the moment but she is hoping we can get together with some of the local schools for some hour sessions! Thank you, Sandi. Once again we are having our annual Carols and Picnic. These will take place on Monday December 14th. The picnic will commence at 6.30pm with carols to follow at 7pm. The classes have chosen their songs. We hope all families will join us. It is another opportunity for us to get together as a community. Please put this date in your diaries and on your calendars. Our Newsletter arrives via email. If you would like a hard copy of the Gorge News, there will be a limited number available in the foyer for collection by you or your child. Please remember that we love to have parents helping in the classrooms and if you have any worries or concerns, please let us know straight away. Education Matters, Teachers Difference & Every Day Counts! Keep up that lifelong learning! Julie Jones Principal Make a My name is Michelle A and I am currently in 6th grade. I recently received a Musical Scholarship from Mill Park Secondary College for 2016 and 2017. I was presented with the scholarship at assembly by a teacher from the school and two ex –students of Morang South Primary School, Christian and Alex. To receive the award I played a piece on the piano and sang a song. The effort I put into applying for the Scholarship really paid off, and I am very proud of that! Each Friday the students set up their market stalls and commence trading. Students have essential items they must buy such as groceries, a car, petrol and a phone. They can then spend the rest of their income on non essential items, however they need to ensure they have enough money to pay their business, personal taxes, rent and bills each week! On Tuesday we put on our detective hats and searched around the school looking for six simple machines. We were searching for levers, wheels and axels, incline planes, wedges, pullies and screws. We have also used LEGO to create different simple machines to see how they work. Last term HG 23 and 24 made paper mache masks and used them as costumes for our Tiddalick the Frog iMovies. Here are photos of our finished products. On the 27th October, the grade 5/6’s had their Billy Cart Incursion. Our instructor Brent taught us the parts of the billy cart and explained to us how they work and how to use certain things on the billy cart. He set up 4 activities for us to do! The activities were racing around the outside, a building challenge, design your own billy cart and make your own invention. We separated off into house colours and rotated around the 4 activities. At the end we had a race with the 2 best racers of the day. Each racer picked three people to be in their pit crew. All the grade 5/6’s had a fun and educational experience, we learnt a lot from Brent and are ready to build our billy carts and race! Last newsletter’s staff member was ... As well as work on our own heart health, we were able to raise the grand sum of $2746.50 which goes to the Heart Foundation for research into heart disease. This is a big increase on the fundraising total that we made last year—well done everyone! Congratulations also to the students who were able to reach “fundraising targets” and are eligible for a prize. The prizes have been delivered to our school and will be distributed over the next week. Support our School Commemorative Bricks In 2012 we began the Commemorative Brick fundraiser at MSPS. It might have been ‘that time of the year’ but we only received minimal orders, we did not have enough special bricks to create a path! We had planned to lay them across the dry river bed, creating a walk way, in front of the Paringa Complex as part of our landscaping. At our Parents & Friends meeting, it was decided to restart the Commemorative Brick fundraiser in 2015. Our aim is to sell more Commemorative Bricks and create our path across the dry river bed! CAN YOU HELP? Would you like your child or your family to have a very special memory at MSPS?
