Reflection

Brigid,

You were a woman of peace,

You brought harmony where there was conflict.

You brought light to the darkness.

You brought hope to the downcast.

May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious,

And may peace be firmly implanted in our hearts and in our world.

Inspire us to act justly and to respect all that God has made.

Brigid, you were a voice for the wounded and the weary,

Strengthen what is weak within us,

Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens.

May we grow each day into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit.

Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Friends,

This last week has been a very busy one at Killester with students being involved in a huge variety of events and extra-curricular opportunities.

During the school assembly on Monday morning, which was presented by the Year 9 level, emphasis was placed on the power of the individual to make the world a better place. Though this assembly was planned before news of the Malaysian Airlines disaster surfaced, it was most relevant in emphasising the importance of all people using their strength, skills and personalities in order to improve living conditions for all. It is at times like this that we cling to the important and central message of Christianity – “Love one another as I have loved you”. The relevance of this message has seldom seemed so strong, and the power of each individual to bring about good was certainly emphasised in many ways during Monday’s assembly.

Last weekend Killester buzzed with life and energy as the cast and crew involved in the upcoming Hairspray production got busy with hours of rehearsals and planning in order to make the performances on 4th, 5th and 6th of September very memorable events. Tickets for this production go on sale on Monday morning (see attached notice for details) and we hope to have a crowded house for each performance. A large number of students are involved in this production and the talents of many are outstanding and will offer first rate entertainment for all. So we hope that friends, families and classmates will plan to have a very enjoyable experience by attending one of the performances.

As many of you will know, each year a group of students from Year 9 take part in the RACV Energy Breakthrough elective. This elective aims to teach the students about issues of sustainability. A large part of the unit deals with preparing students to ride a ‘human-powered vehicle’ in an end of year competition in Maryborough. In order to help with costs associated with preparing and maintaining the vehicles and financing the camping trip to Maryborough, the girls, with the help of staff members, raise funds by selling sausages at Bunnings Warehouses. Last weekend a group of students and staff raised about $1,000 at Bunnings in Keysborough. The day is always an exciting one for the students and, no doubt, adds somewhat to their work experience. This coming weekend the students will again be fundraising, this time at Bunnings in

Springvale. If you’re passing by during the weekend, no doubt the girls would welcome you and provide you will some warm and tasty snacks!

Principal’s Message (Cont’d)

The students who are involved in the Justice and Democracy group attended a very worthwhile and exciting forum day during the week. This time Killester hosted the forum. Students from Kilbreda, Marian College,

Sunshine and Clonard College, Geelong got together with the group of about 25 Killester students to develop concepts for peace museums.

Valuable and fun-filled discussion and socialising took place between the students from the different schools and no doubt their ideas will develop into positive and very relevant action, which will help promote justice in the world. Many thanks to the students involved for their very positive input and to Mrs Marguerite Buckley (Kildare Ministries) and Ms

MarysiaLappin for helping to facilitate this experience for the students.

Yesterday was a very exciting time for the Killester AFL teams. Both Junior and Senior teams headed off to the Highett Reserve early in the morning to compete in the SCSA AFL games. A great day was had by all with wins all round. The Senior team won two games and drew one, while the

Juniors won one game. All students worked hard, competed well and had a very enjoyable day. Congratulations, girls.

And, of course, it was great to see a large number of Year 10 and Year

9 students and parents on Wednesday night for the VCE/VCAL/VET information session. Students and parents were given much general and some detailed information about courses and processes involved in this next phase of education and were encouraged to think about future pathways in broad, rather than in narrow and restricted ways. A number of tertiary institutions were present with display stands on the night and were delighted with the level of interest shown by parents and students. We hope that the night was helpful for all parents and students and we would encourage students to keep lines of communication open between themselves and our Pathways team in the coming months.

We wish all of you, together with your families and friends, a very happy and peaceful weekend in the words of an ancient Irish blessing:

Deep Peace of the running wave to you.

Deep Peace of the flowing air to you.

Deep Peace of the quiet earth to you.

Deep Peace of the shining stars to you.

Deep Peace of the gentle night to you,

Moon and stars pour their healing light on you.

Deep Peace to you

Nationally Consistent Collection of

Data on School Students with

Disabilty

Our school has been selected to participate in the 2014 Nationally Consistent Collection of

Data on School Students with Disability (Data

Collection). This National Data Collection is taking place in schools across Australia and will provide information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the adjustments they receive.

The information provided by this new data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources. This will assist students with disability in government and nongovernment schools across Australia to complete school and go on to further education or find employment.

Inclusion in the Data Collection is voluntary. If you wish your child to be excluded from this, you can choose to opt-out of the data collection by informing us in writing.

For further information about the Data Collection, please contact the Principal or visit Standing

Year 7 Just Dance Tournament

On Wednesday 23rd of July the year Seven House Leaders and Aditi organised a fun activity for the Year 7 level. The lunch time activity was all planned out and ready to start. The activity was Just Dance and the aim of the game was to be the top four best dancers and they each received a prize.!

Most of the year seven girls arrived in the classrooms and we then started the activity. Aditi and Jana had made a playlist of Just Dance

2014 songs, but it wasn’t all up to them because we had so many suggestions from the audience that it was hard to pick. After the first few songs it got really hot for most of the girls because they were doing such a great job at dancing and being physically active. From top hits to rocking the moves everyone was participating and all the year seven house leaders were very happy that everyone had fun and participated with such energy.!

Sadly lunch time came to an end. Overall, we have to say a big thank you to Ms Kennedy for organising the prizes and a big thank you to Joanna for capturing all those amazing, moving moments. At the end of the day Jana, Lina and Aditi chose the top four amazing dancers and they are, Kristen Willenberg, Alanah Parnis, Brittany Morm and Mary Diaco for theirs amazing effort and awesome dance moves, Congratulations Girls!

Year 10 Scienceworks Excursion Year 10 Scienceworks Excursion

On Thursday, 17th July 2014, the Year 10s had an excursion to

Scienceworks. We had an hour long drive to get there and were immediately separated into groups and escorted to our first activity of the day, the Planetarium. We were led into a room with seats in rows occupying the majority of the room because there was actually a screen on the ceiling in a dome shape. The video we watched was about the

Earth's living climate, the shape of the screen caused the watching experience to be very interesting and quite dizzying. However, we learnt a lot about the different changes the Earth has gone through over the past billions of years. It also summarises some topics we learnt in our

Core Science in a very interesting way!

Our second activity was a session inside the Lightning Room. This was where we learnt about electricity and how positive and negative charges behave. There were a few volunteers and funny ways of showing how electricity and magnetic forces work but the final show of lightning was really memorable. We watched with our ears firmly covered under our palms as a massive coil unleashed two million volts of electricity onto their displays. We could see how it flowed through different objects like planes, cars and people. It was interesting to know that you are extremely safe in the event of a lightning storm in a plane and actually in a lot of danger on the ground!

We had an hour after lunch to explore the exhibition sections of

Scienceworks. The ‘Think Ahead’exhibition shows us what our world will be like in the near future. It is really interesting to see how much we will rely on technology in the future! Sportworks was another popular exhibition where many students took part in sporting challenges to measure their fitness and explore how human bodies work.

Overall we learnt heaps of new things and had fun as well. It was a great excursion and we were all very sad to leave at the end of the day because we didn’t get to do all the activities they had to offer.
