Interesting file concerning GF 3476, 1930 Lancia DiLambda, property of the late Patrick A T Garland, a distinguished motor racing competitor. Includes the original buff log book issued to Sir Douglas Hall, Bart, of Cadogan Gardens SW3 on 1st April 1930, also the 2nd owner in 1935 and Patrick Garland who purchased the car in May 1938. Subsequently the car was left with ‘The Plug and Spanner Garage’ in Ashford, Middlesex in 1939; when the premesis was damaged by bombing in October 1940 the Ministry of Supply apparently removed the remains and no more was ever heard of the Lancia. Size 615 mm x 436 mm, printed on heavy duty art paper. £30-£40 728-800 Spare Lot For Sale by Private Treaty Complete run of the ‘Proceedings of the Institution of Automobile Engineers 1906 – 1947;. Total 44 volumes. Vols. 16, 17 and 18 in two parts. Green cloth hardback 8 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Loose copies of this annual are reasonably common: a full run is a rarity. This series of historic papers on engineering developments is by the great names in the industry including Pomeroy, Lanchester, Ricardo, Austin, de Havilland, Fedden, Irving, Railton, Kimber, Wilson and Olley. Subjects range from wheel diameters to the R101 and there are good period plates and drawings. They make an impressive shelf run of slightly more than 6ft. This run is offered for sale by private treaty on enquiry to the HVA Office. Estimate £350-£450 Collection from the owner in the Prescott area (possibly around VSCC Prescott weekend), or delivery can be arranged by courier at cost. 57 Lot: 801 1940 New Hudson Autocycle Registration No. FO 4005 Chassis No. MC 242 Engine No. XX 9091 Estimate: £500-£600 New Hudson of Birmingham was one of the pioneer motorcycle manufactures, their first machine being produced in 1903. Production of fine bikes continued until 1932, when the company began producing Girling brake parts and other car components for the motor trade. However, in 1939, using their bike producing skills and machinery, an Autocycle was designed and put into production for 1940, but the war intervened, and by 1943 BSA had purchased the company, after only a few had been produced. After the war, production continued, but the design had been changed; the bikes were heavier and the excellent Villiers ‘Junior De Luxe’ two stroke single speed engine was no longer available, though the new machines were still marketed as New Hudsons. So this is a rare survivor of the original design, with the uncowled engine, bicycle brakes and large fuel tank, with direct electric lighting and an effective centre stand. The machines were able to deliver 150 miles to a gallon of mixture, and cost just over £20 for a high quality, simple and easy to maintain bike. They would undoubtedly have had a great future had production continued, and post war models, even at nearly £50, sold well. This very original Autocycle was first registered in Radnorshire on 5 August 1940, (and has a very attractive period registration number) and was in use locally until 1960. Much later it was rebuilt and examined for dating by the VMCC in 1998, since when it was little used before being laid up in 2000. Some easy renovation, hopefully without incurring significant expense will result in a charming and rare period machine. A buff log book from 1946, current V5c, old MoT from 1999, VMCC dating certificate and New Hudson history publication accompany the lot. 58 Lot: 802 1934 Austin Seven Chassis Registration No. NJ 9128 Chassis No. 246726 Engine No. AND 950 Estimate: £800-£1,200 This is the last mortal remains of a 1934 Austin Seven Opal 2-seat tourer, which was in the process of being dismantled for rebuild by a VSCC member when, despite being in a favoured part of the Cotswolds it was visited by thieves who stole the body, wings and interior etc. However, the remains comprise a good 6ft 9 inch chassis, with axles, wheels, engine in pieces, 4-speed gearbox, running gear, radiator and cowl etc, all present but in need of restoration. The steering box and wheel disappeared with the body, and the log book has been misplaced, but the original and interesting number should be recoverable. This is an excellent basis for a period special, with all the major parts included, allowing scope to produce an imaginatively designed sporting or trails car; hopefully retaining the period registration number. 59 Lot: 803 1909 De Dion Bouton BN Registration No. Not Registered Chassis No. N/A Engine No. 23853 Estimate: £7,000-£9,000 Count de Dion and Georges Bouton joined forces in 1883 to produce steam vehicles in a small works at Puteaux outside Paris. They soon decided to move into the internal combustion engine business, and by 1895 were producing motor tricycles that soon became very popular and led to a series of sporting water cooled single cylinder light cars of around 1 litre capacity of which this is a later 1909 example, displacing 950ccs. Larger cars in the range included an 8 cylinder 50 hp model, but it is for the pre 1914 ‘voiturettes’ that Count de Dion is remembered, and for which he received the epitaph ‘Father of the French Motor Industry’. The car on offer is a typical De Dion voiturette of the pre 1914 era, which was originally exported to Australia, and then brought into the UK in 2009 in dismantled condition, requiring total restoration. Items included are a sound chassis, engine less carburettor and ignition system, pedals, steering wheel, box and column, springs, axles, hubs and brakes, with brake and gear levers etc. Also a partly completed 2-seater body, radiator surround, bonnet etc. Major items still needed are a radiator, clutch and more complete gearbox and a set of wheels. An unusual chance to acquire an almost complete Edwardian voiturette requiring total but relatively straightforward restoration. 60 Lot: 804 1908 De Dion Bouton 8 hp Engine Registration No. N/A Chassis No. N/A Engine No. 25221 Estimate: £1,000-£1,200 This is a remarkably original, sound and correct De Dion Bouton 8 hp single cylinder engine of 100 x 120 mm, similar to that fitted to the previous lot. This 1908 engine has mechanical valves complete with the variable exhaust valve mechanism. It is complete with De Dion Bouton carburettor, No. 456, made under Zenith licence and a correct 1908 Bosch DU1 magneto, Paris made, No. 386075. Other original fittings include oil drain and priming cocks, porcelain HT insulator and starting handle with wooden grip. All the aluminium castings are in excellent condition, and with matching numbers; there is a small old repair to the water jacket. Altogether a remarkably complete and original engine; a quick inspection reveals that the internal components show very little wear. This should be of considerable interest to the purchaser of Lot 803, or indeed any other De Dion Bouton 8 hp owner. 61 Lot: 805 1912 Star 12 hp Registration No. Not Registered Chassis No. B854 Engine No. N/A Estimate: £8,000-£10,000 Edward Lyle established Star Engineering of Wolverhampton as an offshoot of his Star Cycle business, and the first car was produced in 1898. Early Stars were usually based on continental models, first Benz then De Dion and later Panhard. By 1904 all Star models had 4-cylinder engines on Mercedes lines from the 1743 cc 12 hp model offered here, up to the racing 8-litre 70 hp car, closely based on a Mercedes Sixty. The cars were expensive but very well constructed and become popular in Britain and the Empire; many such as this 1912 example being imported to Australia. This little 12 hp 2-seater was returned to the UK around 2000 as a rolling chassis, and has since had the engine, gearbox and chassis rebuilt, with new hubs made to fit the wheels. As the original rear axle was incomplete, a 1911 axle was found and modified to suit, but further work is required. Many items required to complete the restoration are included, with a magneto, carburettor, manifolds, brake and gearchange controls being present. The body with seats, hood frame etc is almost complete. However a prop shaft, bonnet top, king pins etc are still required, and the wings seen with the car are fibreglass replicas. A super little Edwardian car with a sensible sized 1743 cc 4-cylinder engine which can be completed without too many items needing to be sourced, and which would result in a rare and delightful participant in VSCC LC&E events. 62 Lot: 806 1934 Austin Seven Nippy Registration No. BDH 24 Chassis No. B92020 Engine No. M244769 Estimate: £3,500-£4,500 The Sports model ‘65’ was introduced in 1933 on the long 6ft 9 inch chassis as a sports two seater, rather than a racing car, but in broad terms it represented an updated ‘Ulster’ in the Seven line up. By 1934, the model became known as the ‘Nippy’ but was mostly unchanged from the previous years production except that the body was now panelled in steel rather than aluminium, making it slightly heavier but infinitely more durable. This example, first registered on 11 July 1934 was rebuilt in the late 1960s for use as a trials car. This involved rebuilding the body without opening doors, as a huge aid to rigidity. At this time an earlier pre 1931 engine was also fitted, but the original block and crankcase are still with the car. A four speed gearbox was retained and the present owner acquired the ‘Nippy’ some 10 years ago as a project from its owner in Bosbury, where it had been since 1970. Time has prevented the completion of the work, but the car now has rebuilt 17 inch wheels with Dunlop tyres, a pair of replacement steel front wings of the correct pattern and retains its original radiator with stoneguard, windscreen etc though the front axle is now the straight saloon type rather than the sports dropped variety. The boot lid is also missing, but would not be difficult to replace. This represents an excellent opportunity to purchase an original Nippy, albeit somewhat modified, but with most of the correct parts to effect a rebuild. A V5c safeguards the period registration number. 63 Lot: 807 1933 Austin Seven Sports 65 Engine Registration No. N/A Chassis No. N/A Engine No. M180614 (Crankcase) M230137 (Block) Estimate: £1,500-£1,800 This 1933 Sports 65 engine was acquired by the vendor of the previous Lot (Austin 7 Nippy) but not fitted. It has apparently been rebuilt with new valves, pistons and bearings and has a later Ruby type flywheel and clutch, and a desirable 14 mm plug head. It is complete with inlet and exhaust manifolds. The block bears the correct ‘Chromidium’ casting mark, and the sump is of the heavily finned alloy type, holding 1 gallon of oil, but prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves as to the correctness of other internal parts, though the engine appears to be properly prepared in an ‘engineering’ manner. 64 Lot: 808 1930 Austin Seven Ulster Replica Registration No. SV 5096 Chassis No. 122111 Engine No. M222613 Estimate: £6,000-£7,500 The Austin Motor Company used the success of their Works Racing Team to generate publicity for the firm, and to develop a series of sports and racing cars based on the ‘Seven’. In 1928 the Super Sports model evolved into the fantastically successful ‘Ulster’ which became almost unbeatable in the 750cc class and was the only serious rival to the MG team in later years. There were never enough of those versatile little sports cars and a cottage industry has long been established to enable enthusiasts to convert tired saloons into sporting Ulster replicas. SV 5096 is one such example, was completed by the current owner in 1994 and has been in use ever since. It is based on a correct 1930 short (6ft 3 inch) chassis, with tuned 2-bearing coil engine fitted with a 14 mm plug head, SU carburettor and 4-branch exhaust manifold, and mounting a well proportioned and correct looking fibreglass body by possibly the best manufacturer, Chris Gould, (No. CG 72). Other improvements carried out include Bowdenex Girling brakes and wider cast iron drums. The British Racing Green bodywork is setoff with black wings, and correct style windscreen, radiator stoneguard, quick release fuel filler cap, cockpit ‘hosepipe’ beading, outside exhaust with fishtail, bonnet strap etc. The cockpit is well finished and the car is properly equipped, with correct type headlamps etc, resulting in a very handsome appearance overall.This is a very useable vintage Ulster, not currently eligible for VSCC events because of its body construction, but acceptable everywhere else, in good running order, with an MoT certificate until September and taxed (free of charge) to the end of August. 65 Lot: 809 1919 Morris Cowley 2 Seater Registration No. LU 6991 Car No. 4354 Engine No. 11407 Estimate: £7,000-£9,000 William Morris set up business in Oxford and was soon producing his popular White and Poppe engined cars in reasonable numbers, but he soon realised that to increase sales he needed a car that would compete on price terms with imported American models. Accordingly he visited the US and arranged for the supply of Continental engines at £18 each (the previous W&P engines had cost about £50 each), and on a later visit he was able to source axles, gearboxes and steering gear for his new Cowley at equally advantageous prices. The first new ‘Continental’ engined Cowley appeared in 1915 at a very reasonable 158 guineas, but war had been declared some 8 months earlier, and new import duties caused prices to spiral, whilst 1,500 of the first 3,000 engines were lost at sea due to enemy action. Eventually private car production was prohibited in 1916, but Morris were quick to restart assembly lines after the Armistice, using American parts still in store, whilst designing a new post war Cowley. The ‘Continental Red Seal’ engined Cowley was an innovative design, and was very well received by the motoring public; prices for second-hand examples were always high, but the number made was not large, and very few now remain. Ten cars appear in the 2006 Register of Early Morris Cars (with thanks and acknowledgement to Margaret Goding, Registrar, for this excellent publication). LU 6991 was first registered on 26 March 1919, and is thus assembled from earlier parts. It has been in long term ownership, during which time a complete restoration was commenced, but never completed, and this car is now offered on behalf of the owners widow. Much work has been done, and the car is mechanically complete, although it may require re-commissioning, and the two seater body is nearing completion. A buff log book and a V5c, together with a large archive accompany this historic car. Early Bullnose Cowleys have a ‘light and spidery’ appearance that is very different from the later cars, but survivors are very few in number, and seldom come to the market. LU 6991 has had most of the hard work done, and could be restored relatively simply, and is a good opportunity to aquire a scarce early car, well known in Bullnose circles, nearing completion of its protracted rebuild. 66 67 Lot: 810 1928 Rolls Royce 20 hp Chassis Registration No. DAB 983 Chassis No. GFN 46 Engine No. D72 Estimate £18,000-£20,000 Rolls Royce introduced the 20 hp in 1922 as a ‘small’ alternative to the Silver Ghost and later Phantom I models in answer to the need for a car more suited to the owner driver, and at the same time incorporating modern innovations and designs required since the Great War. The new model undoubtedly cost less to run, and somewhat less to purchase initially, but the quality was the same, and the cars were immediately acclaimed, with nearly 3,000 chassis laid down before production ended in 1929 on the introduction of 20/25. The chassis was more modern than the Ghost, the engine in particular, being a six cylinder monobloc with a detachable head and 7 bearing crankshaft, with a capacity of 3,127 ccs, and a gearbox mounted in unit. The construction was entirely conventional, with very precise steering and excellent brakes to all wheels, and servo assisted by the time this chassis was laid down. At first the gearbox was a 3-speed unit with central gear change (and central handbrake) but this was much criticised as being too American, and by 1925 the box was now 4 speed, with right hand gear lever and handbrake (again as fitted to this car). Chassis No. GFN 46 was on test in October 1928 and delivered to Mulliners coachbuilders of Chiswick London in December of that year to be fitted with their 6 Light Weyman Saloon body with division. The car was then delivered to The Hon. George Akers Douglas of St Mary Cray in Kent, in October 1929 for the sum of £1400, and the build sheets, of which a copy is included with the lot, show that he kept the car until at least 1936. The original registration number was KP 475. At some time in the mid 1930s, the original 1928 Weymann body was removed, possibly because its light weight construction could have resulted in early disintegration, and the car was updated with a later and taller 20/25 radiator and bulkhead and fitted with a ‘modern’ Southern coachworks convertible body. At the same time, the car was registered with a more modern number, as currently worn, namely DAB 983. A photograph amongst the papers with the car show that this was an attractive updating, but it seems that this second coachwork also disintegrated, and when the car came into the hands of the late owner in West Wales, he determined to rebuild the chassis to a high standard, and fit replica Barker ‘barrel sided’ touring coachwork, arguably the most attractive style fitted to a 20 hp Rolls Royce. At the time of his death the owner had completed an engine rebuild (though this may not have been needed as the engine had little wear) and the chassis was very properly prepared to receive its proposed coachwork. At the same time a lower and earlier 20 hp radiator and bulkhead were acquired and fitted, to suit the proposed Barker tourer. A large file is included with the car, containing bills for work undertaken, and parts supplied as well as a huge number of photographs showing work in progress from the arrival of the complete car before dismantling up to the present complete state. A very worthwhile project, with all the hard work done, resulting in a well restored chassis, running well and now ready to receive suitable coachwork. 68 69 Lot: 811 1928 Austin Seven Sports Special Registration No. SV 6343 Chassis No. 55257 Engine No. M116292 Estimate: £9,000-£10,000 The Austin Seven in all its forms has always proved popular as a mount for vintage events and this has fostered a huge demand especially for pre 1930 VSCC eligible sporting 2-seaters suitable for all manner of competition. There has always been a good selection of parts available mainly from the large number of saloons produced, and some of these period specials, if properly designed and built, are very desirable. SV 6343 is one such device, being based on a mid 1928 chassis, with August 1930 engine, and a body designed and built by Austin Seven guru, Dave Tedham, on traditional lines, thus satisfying the eligibility team of the VSCC. Construction was started in 2006, using appropriate parts, rebuilt and installed in the 1928 short chassis. The engine is in very good condition, with new pistons and rings, a skimmed 14 mm plug head (might not suit VSCC but can easily be changed), an SU carburettor on an alloy manifold, with a specially fabricated fourbranch exhaust manifold and outside system. The petrol tank is located in the boot, and is specially made with filler pipe and quick release cap at the rear. Brakes have been completely renewed, a new radiator fitted and the car has been rewired with armoured cable, using new side and rear lamps and re-silvered headlamps. The suspension was rebuilt and the wheels have new tyres and tubes, including the spare which is housed in the boot.A useful feature of the design is that the scuttle panel is fitted with quick release fasteners to allow easy access to the rear of the instrument panel and dashboard etc.The very attractive body is a doorless pointed tail 2-seater with aero screens, a panelled boot and cycle type wings, constructed in aluminium, one of ten made to a similar design. With its increased power and light weight, this will make an effective competition car in suitable events. A lively and attractive sporting Austin Seven Special, ready for use, with a current MoT certificate valid until 16 Nov 2012, which can easily be made VSCC eligible at slight cost. 70 Lot: 812 1952 Armstrong Siddeley Whitley Saloon Registration No. MCD 336 Chassis No. 1812676 Engine No. 1812682 Estimate: £5,500-£7,500 Production of aero engines kept Armstrong Siddeley Motors busy during the Second World War, and in 1945 the factory was keen to put into production a postwar range of their “cars of aircraft quality”. As early as January 1943 the design of the new cars was sanctioned, and by 1944 prototypes of the 16hp range appeared, all celebrating the Hawker Siddeley Aviation Companies aero engines and bearing the names of famous aircraft; the first 12 models were delivered during December 1945. The chassis was of massive construction as befits a car intended for export to the colonies, and had a large central cruciform, with box section front and rear chassis rails, and was designed to incorporate independant front suspension by torsion bar. Rear suspension was by conventional leaf springs, steering was Burman worm and nut type, and brakes were Girling hydraulic at the front and rod operated mechanical at the rear, giving a failsafe option if the hydraulics failed. The engine, a 2 litre 16 hp at first, and later as in this car a 2.3 litre 18hp unit was a 6 cylinder ohv with a Westlake designed head employing hydraulic tappets. Wilson preselect gearboxes were usually fitted, but this example has the desirable four-speed manual box with synchromesh on top, third and second. The new cars all shared a family resemblance, the radiator grille and front end being very attractively styled in the art-deco manner. Coachwork of all the standard designs was produced in-house by Burlingham, but several outside coachbuilders produced their own versions. Introduced in 1950 and produced in 4 and 6 light versions, the Whitley was an improved update of the original Lancaster, the chief advances being in the construction of the body frame with timber used only in the turret area, the wheelarches being of box-section steel and aluminium castings, with steel and aluminium windscreen and door pillars, all contributing to an immensely strong and rigid body. Indeed this car, after 57 years service has doors and boot lid which are entirely free from “sag” and fit as well as when they were new. First registered in Brighton in 1952 this exceptional 18hp 6 light manual saloon is believed to have covered only 47,000 in its sixty years on the road. It is carefully used and well maintained by its owner and the car has a current V5c and MoT certificate. Mechanically the car is excellent, with a very smooth engine and gearbox and a delightful exhaust note. The body and interior are also in super condition, and with a very small amount of attention the car could easily be a concours contender. 71 Lot: 813 1936 Austin Seven Nippy Registration No. COJ 844 Chassis No. AEB251367 Engine No. 251367 Estimate: £12,000-£14,000 The new Austin 7 Sports model for the 1930s, introduced in June 1933 to replace the iconic ‘Ulster’ was named the ’65 Sports’, later ‘Nippy’. Bodywork was a low slung 2-seater with doors and a boot containing the spare wheel; the car was a less ‘out and out racer’ than the Ulster, but was considerably more civilised and easier to use on a daily basis, whilst still being well suited to sporting events. Sales proved its popularity, nearly 250 being sold in the first six months, and well over a thousand 65 and Nippy models found owners before production ceased in 1937; this compares well with about 300 Ulsters made in total. The Nippy was workmanlike, performed well in competition and found a new market (for the first time in LHD form) in Germany. COJ 844 was registered on 31 December 1936, making it one of the last Nippys made, and it remains in remarkably original condition. The sports engine is still installed, though the carburettor has been changed; this is said to improve performance over the original downdraught Zenith. The car runs well and has a current MoT certificate, with V5c to protect the original 1936 Birmingham registration number. The steel panelled body is in sound condition, and unusually for a Nippy very original. This is a charming, genuine and attractive late Nippy, requiring only a little care and attention to make a very useable car, reliable and eligible for VSCC events. 72 Lot: 814 1924 Morris Cowley Sports Special Registration No. SV 6940 Chassis No. 45095R Car No. 478095R Estimate: £10,000-£12,000 William Morris had seen the publicity value of competition successes, and from the very first entered his cars in the ‘gentler sporting events’, often himself driving and frequently with some success. In 1921 a Sports Cowley was introduced at £398, differing only slightly from the standard car mechanically, having aluminium pistons, a much louder exhaust and a higher axle ratio. The bodywork, however, usually polished aluminium with contrasting wings and panels was sensational, and inspired Cecil Kimber to carry on where Morris left off, giving birth to the MG Super Sports and all that followed. This extremely attractive 1924 Bullnose Cowley has been in the current owners hands for over 30 years, having been found derelict on a farm in the late 1970s. Having been hugely impressed by photographs of Sporting Cowleys and MGs in Jarman and Barracloughs book, ‘The Bullnose and Flatnose Morris’, the decision was easily made to produce a Sports Special Cowley 2-seater in the style of the early Morris Garages cars, incorporating all their best features. Accordingly, the chassis was carefully restored and every component overhauled. The engine was rebuilt as is normal these days with a stronger Marine or Commercial Morris crankshaft, lightened flywheel, alloy pistons, high compression head and straight through exhaust, producing a magnificent fruity note. The springs are cord bound and Hartford shock absorbers are fitted, resulting in a fine handling car which is even able to keep up with its owners 3-litre Bentley. Correct 1924 Morris parts were used where possible, mainly from the original chassis. The superb polished aluminium and claret body is equipped with an alloy dashboard well stocked with a range of correct instruments, comfortable leather seats, a small single door for the passenger and a specially made and correct triangulated five piece windscreen. The wheels wear splendid polished discs, and all the correct lamps, horn, Calormeter etc, are fitted.The rebuild was completed in 1981, and the car has been extensively used since, including a tour of France in 1999 when 1700 miles were covered in sweltering heat, with no problems. In all some 10,000 miles have been covered without issue. As the owner now lives in the Far East, the car has not been used for some 4 years, but has recently been re-commissioned and put through an MoT. A very well restored early Bullnose Cowley, with most attractive sporting coachwork, a proven record of reliability and ready to use and enjoy. 73 Lot: 815 1923 Morris Oxford 2-seater Registration No. XO 3871 Chassis No. 27373 Engine No. 34778 Estimate: £12,000-£15,000 ‘We are indebted to the late Eric Longworth’s son-in-law, Michael Sumpster who knows this car well, for his affectionate notes concerning the Oxford’ The Bullnose Morris was the best-selling British car of the post-WW1 period. Introduced originally before the War, the Cowley was the basic model. The Oxford was similar, but better equipped. Later Oxford cars had larger engines, but the example offered here has the same 11.9 hp engine as the Cowley. The car offered here is arguably the most original and best preserved early Morris Oxford, and has unique provenance. Its first owner was a lady farmer in Cove, near Farnborough, Hampshire, and she later removed the dickey seat in order to carry straw bales. The car was, inevitably, eventually consigned to storage in a barn, where it was discovered by the late Eric Longworth, and purchased by him in 1959, as his first vintage restoration. Although a pharmacist by profession, Eric was an engineer by inclination, and carried out a meticulous and sensitive restoration, teaching himself the skills necessary, such as lathe work and welding. Over the next 50 years the car was lovingly maintained and improved, without ever departing from its total originality. Some errors in the original restoration were later corrected: fading had caused both the hood and the body to change colour, leading Eric to have the new hood made in khaki duck, and the body painted in a sort of Air Force blue. The body was later repainted in the correct shade of Oxford blue, and a new black hood, sidescreens and hood bag made, which have had very little use since. The dickey seat is fitted with a rare and original folding Auster screen. A new battery and re-wound magneto were fitted recently. The car is also unique in having been nominated for an Oscar! It starred in the BP promotional film “The Home-Made Car” which was directed by James Hill, who went on to direct Born Free. It tells the story of a young man who discovers a derelict Bullnose in a scrapyard, and records his adventures in getting it back on the road. The film was nominated in 1963 for an Oscar in the Short Films category, and went on to win two other European awards. The car comes with an extensive collection of documentation, including two photograph albums recording its discovery, restoration and later use, and a unique set of material relating to the film, including the display board which was with the car when it was exhibited in Shell-Mex House in London for the premiere of the film. With the car are also16mm film, VHS video and DVD copies of the film. The original 1923 buff logbook is also included, together with several technical manuals and copies of virtually every book published on the Bullnose Morris. A number of spares and an Accumate charger are included. The Morris, known in the family as “Bertha”, is available after 52 years with only its second owner, since Eric Longworth died, at the age of 91, in 2011. It is to be hoped that its new owner will care for it as well, and derive as much pleasure from it, as Eric and his family did. 74 75 Lot: 816 1929 MG 14/40 Super Sports Tourer Registration No. GJ 4158 Car No. 294756 4/2748 Engine No. 92778 Estimate: £40,000-£45,000 The story of how Cecil Kimber joined Morris Motors in 1921, soon became General Manager of Morris Garages and produced his own superbly styled polished aluminium sports coachwork on Bullnose Cowley chassis with Oxford engines is well known. But what may come as a surprise is how quickly the enterprise grew, until in 1928 the MG Car Company was established in large premesis in Edmund Road, Oxford, and now produced the 14/40 or Mk IV version of the Super Sports in sufficient numbers to attract a large and influential following. The cars were stylish and immensely attractive, very nicely made, and at last had performance to match their looks. The MG Super Sports must surely be one of the most attractive sports cars of the late vintage period, and was certainly considered very exciting when new. The lines are well proportioned without being aggressive, and the details of the triangulated windscreen supports, cowl scuttle vents and polished aluminium body panels add to the effect. GJ 4158 left the Works in June 1929, and was one of the last 14/40s to be sold; by then the 18/80 was well into production. The car was bought in 1954 by its current owner, who has spent the last 58 years of his ownership enjoying the car, which he used for many years on a daily basis as his sole means of transport. Only increasing congestion in the Home Counties has persuaded him to find a new owner for this historic MG. The early history of the car is somewhat complicated, but apart from a gap from June 1930 to May 1933 is fully documented, and the modifications which the present owner has carried out during his long tenure were listed in a recent letter to the VSCC Bulletin. Basically he tuned the engine, polished the ports and fitted an SU carburettor, replaced the original 3-speed gearbox, heavy flywheel and undergeared rear axle with a 4-speed gearbox, lightened flywheel with heavy crankshaft and steel rods, with a new up-geared 18/80 crown wheel and pinion. This made the car much nicer to use on an everyday basis, but also enabled long distance travel without stress. The car covered huge daily mileages to France, Monte Carlo and Italy when it had a part in the film ‘Monte Carlo or Bust’. Cruising at a steady 60 mph, over 500 miles were easily travelled in a day. These modifications are now commonplace for cars which are used regularly. The MG is so well known in VSCC circles that if an event was to be held on planet Mars, then it was said that the famous 14/40 would still be driven all the way there and back. The car still has a very smart appearance, having been completely dismantled and restored in the late 1950s, and with the bodywork being restored again in the 1980s. The polished aluminium 2-door tourer body is finished in an attractiveshade of blue, and the car is in every way ready to be enjoyed. An important and very proper motorcar, detailed in P.L. Jennings seminal work ‘Early MG’.
