Dear Alumni and Friends,
I am so pleased to present the 2013-2014 Manhattanville Honor Roll which highlights
another year of generous contributions to the College from its alumni, parents, Trustees, faculty,
staff, friends, foundations and corporations, and current students. Whatever your connection
with the College, I thank you for recognizing the value of Manhattanville in your own life and
ensuring that the values, traditions, and education of this fine college are passed on to today’s
deserving students. This booklet lists those who made donations to Manhattanville during the
fiscal year July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014.
It is an honor to report that giving to the Annual Fund increased this past year, allowing us to provide more financial assistance, library and faculty funding, and Duchesne Center
scholarship support, to name just a few areas that benefit directly from your contributions. For
the first time, this Honor Roll recognizes all members of the Sheila M. Smythe Society, the
College’s most dedicated donors who have given consecutively for two or more years. In fact, over half of the members of
the Sheila M. Smythe Society are lifetime donors, having given to Manhattanville for 10+ years.
Once again, we have spotlighted here a number of our students who are receiving scholarship assistance through
the giving of specific classes who have chosen to endow these scholarships. The difference the scholarship awards
make to these outstanding young people is evident, as they are being provided with the chance to devote themselves
more fully to their studies and Manhattanville experience. In addition, you will find an update on our most recent
2014 Alumni Reunion which was record-setting in attendance. Close to 450 alumni and guests visited campus in June
for an engaging and enjoyable weekend.
The Strategic Planning Committee continues its important work on a five-year strategic plan (through 2020.)
Over-arching goals were enthusiastically approved by the Board of Trustees in Spring 2014. The undergraduate and
graduate deans are currently working closely with faculty members to clarify which academic initiatives will form the
core of the strategic plan, while other departments are defining their respective roles in support of the strategic goals.
As I noted in the last Honor Roll, Provost Gail Simmons is leading this effort, with the help of a very effective committee representing faculty, staff and students. For those who have not visited campus recently for a reunion or other event, we invite you to come and see the
many large and small physical enhancements that make the College so inviting. These have taken place under the
guidance of Jean Strauss, Director of Special Projects, and with the enthusiastic help of many staff and faculty members. Manhattanville now has Heritage Hall, a beautiful permanent physical space in Reid Castle that highlights the
College’s history and emphasizes the continuing values and traditions from our RSCJ origins. In addition, the historic
“Octagon Room” was attractively renovated and dedicated in June for the Rose Institute for Learning and Literacy,
the School of Education program established by alumna and donor, Sandra Priest Rose ’73. The room is now used
for the Rose Institute classes and other School of Education programs, including the doctoral program. At the recent
October Board meeting, the Manhattanville Quadrangle was appropriately dedicated to Elizabeth J. McCormack, past
President and current Trustee, for her longstanding commitment to the College. With the support of Student Affairs, a
project to enhance the residential spaces using simple techniques, like accent painting and reorganizing space to create
mini-lounges, is improving student living in a measurable way. Further, a landscaping program for the campus entrance
is planned to beautify the impression of Manhattanville right from the campus entrance. We invite alumni to suggest
their own ideas for such important quality of life improvements!
As I write, I realize there is much more that is going on at Manhattanville today than can be included in this
letter. Please read this Honor Roll and accept our gratitude for your invaluable support of Manhattanville College. You
will see in these pages an ad for Castle Conversations, a dynamic speaker series about to launch at Manhattanville in
2015! And, stay tuned to our website, mville.edu, for on-going information and additional updates on this vital and

After deciding she wanted a small liberal arts college experience, Jennifer
chose Manhattanville not only for its excellent opportunities for student
teaching, but also because of the extensive financial scholarship opportunities, making a college
education within reach.
Having formed strong relationships with faculty, administrators and classmates, Jennifer
is grateful for the strong sense of family within the Manhattanville community. Professor
Van Hartmann has been an excellent mentor and helped her achieve college-level writing
skills. As an active student on campus, Jennifer is the volunteer coordinator for Creative
Expressions Through Art, and a member of the Manhattanville Dance Ensemble and the Student
Ambassador Association. In addition, she works with transfer students as an Admissions
Assistant.
Before discovering Manhattanville, Jennifer was not sure if college would be a possibility.

Manhattanville College Honor Roll of Donors 2013–2014
Class of 1944 Endowed Scholarship: To celebrate their 50th Reunion in 1994, the Class of 1944 came together to raise funds
to endow a scholarship for deserving Manhattanville students. The class elected to award the scholarship specifically
to students majoring in Philosophy or Religion because the subjects were fundamental to their own experiences at
the College. Since the scholarship began, Daphne Root ’44 and fellow classmates Gloria Ison McCarthy and Elizabeth
J. McComack, have played key roles in selecting and mentoring recipients and continuing to grow the fund’s
endowment. To date, over 30 students have been awarded the coveted scholarship, thanks to the generosity and
commitment of the Class of ’44. Meet the current recipients, Jesse, Elizabeth and Connor!

Upon graduating
high school in El
Salvador, Jesse
received minimal help in looking for
colleges. While visiting his parents who
had moved to New York, he researched
schools at the library with his father and
was intrigued by Manhattanville. He met
with an admissions counselor during the
summer and was offered a generous financial aid package, making him feel sincerely
welcomed to the College’s community.
After originally declaring Philosophy as a
minor, Jesse’s most influential professor,
Dr. Nash-Marshall, encouraged him to
major in the subject because of his intuitive
understanding of philosophical topics.
Despite having a rigorous course schedule
as a double major, he has been able to
take all of the classes that have interested
him. With a life-long interest in religion and
faith, Jesse has found World Religions and
Philosophy of Religions to be among his
favorite courses while St. Thomas Aquinas
has become his most admired philosopher.
Financial scholarships have made it
possible to afford a higher education, and
as one of the first in his family to attend
college, Jesse is extremely grateful for the
opportunity to make his parents proud.

me, it gave me a tremendous confidence boost and has motivated me
to pursue studying philosophy at the
graduate level. I’ve truly felt honored
and thankful to have the support of
generous alumni and am even more
driven to excel to make the Class of ’44

Connor Scally ’15
Elizabeth came
to Manhattanville
for its prime location, small community
and cultural focus. Elizabeth had always
intended to study World Religions.
Having support from alumni and being
financially funded through the Class
of ’44 scholarship motivates Elizabeth
to excel academically. Outside of the
classroom, Elizabeth is a writer for
Touchstone and has worked in the
Accounts Payable office.
After touring
Manhattanville and spending a night on
campus, Connor couldn’t imagine going
anywhere else for college. During his
time as a student, Connor has not only
had a terrific academic experience but
also made friends with the best people
he has ever met. When he enrolled as a
freshman, Connor was extremely shy but
he is now very involved in campus life.
On campus, Connor is President of
the Philosophy Club, an Orientation
Coordinator, and a student worker in the
Game Zone. In addition, Connor is helping
organize a philosophy conference with Dr.
Nash-Marshall. His freshman Foundations
of Philosophy course inspired Connor to
major in the subject, and Aristotle has
become Connor’s favorite philosopher
because of his relatable views on
friendship and writing style.

Receiving the Class of 1944 Scholarship
means a great deal to Connor. Aside from
being a huge honor, his scholarship has
allowed him to completely focus on his
studies and deepen his understanding
of course materials and spend less time
worrying about the financial burden
of his education. “Alumni support
is so important because it really
provides intelligent students with the
opportunity to further their education.
As a benefactor of others’ generosity, I
am working harder than ever to make
those who believed in me proud, and
I am motivated to give back to the

When Nataly was considering colleges, she was looking for a small
community with big diversity and similar values. With Manhattanville’s
vibrant international student population and extensive financial support opportunities, Nataly
found her home away from home.
On campus, Nataly is a regular Midnight Run volunteer and member of the Manhattanville
Dance Ensemble and Creative Expressions Through Art. She is also a tutor helping students in
Pre-calculus, German, and Introduction to Communications courses. Nataly has greatly enjoyed
her first two years as a part of the tight-knit Manhattanville community. Some of her favorite
teachers include German professor, Gabrielle Wickert, and writing seminar professor, John
Proctor, who taught one of her favorite courses, “Convergent Media and Divergent Voices.”
Early on, Nataly recognized the unique relationships Manhattanville creates across its
community. “Alumni support keeps a strong bond and connection with the College. By
giving back, current and future students will be granted the opportunity to join the
community and have the same special experiences as those who came before them.”

Thuy first heard about Manhattanville from a friend who was also an
international student. Based on her friend’s positive experience at the
College, combined with the desirable location and excellent financial
aid and scholarship opportunities, Thuy chose to become a Valiant. Thuy
is a regular volunteer on Midnight Run trips with the Duchesne Center
and especially enjoys serving meals at a Manhattan soup kitchen on Mondays. Thuy has been
involved in the International Film Festival and Human Rights Awareness Day and also founded
the 8-Ball Club as a freshman for pool players on campus.
After completing her education at Manhattanville, Thuy plans to travel and continue her community
service by building homes in her home-country of Vietnam. As a long term career goal, Thuy
hopes to own her own civil engineering company after furthering her education in graduate
school. “Without the financial support of scholarships provided by the generosity of alumni,
many talented students would not be able to enroll. Alumni giving bonds the entire
Manhattanville community and offers hopeful students the opportunity to gain the skills they
need to become successful and socially-responsible leaders.”

173rd Commencement Recap
On Saturday, May 17, Manhattanville College welcomed
Tony Award winning producer Gregory Rae as the keynote
speaker at the 173rd Undergraduate Commencement. IBM
Vice President John C. Shaw `80 was the Graduate Commencement Speaker on Thursday, May 15, and New York City Mayor
Bill DeBlasio’s Chief of Staff Laura G. Santucci `03 gave an
inspirational speech as the Baccalaureate and Honors Convocation Speaker on Friday, May 16.
Rae and Shaw, along with retiring Chair of the Board of
Trustees Bob Hall, received Doctor of Humane Letters, “honoris
causa,” degrees. Additionally, iconic comedian Rodney Dangerfield was posthumously-awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of the impact of his 40 year career as an entertainer
and comedian on American culture. Dangerfield’s widow, Joan,
who accepted the award on his behalf, said, “Rodney’s act… is
a masterpiece of philosophy worthy of being studied in colleges
like Plato’s Socratic Dialogues.” Manhattanville’s faculty agrees.
Starting in Spring 2015, students may seek a minor in the field
of comedy through the Rodney Dangerfield Institute for the
Study of Comedy at Manhattanville College.

Mother Eleanor O’Byrne Legacy Society
The Mother Eleanor O’Byrne Society honors alumni and friends who have created a living legacy by designating Manhattanville College as the beneficiary
of a bequest, trust, charitable gift annuity, life insurance policy or retirement plan, or who have made other estate provisions for the College. The Society is
named for the College’s fifth President, who served from 1945 to 1965. Mother O’Byrne’s lasting legacy is our beautiful campus, as she was the driving force
behind the purchase of the estate on which Manhattanville College now stands.

Sheila M. Smythe ’52 was one of Manhattanville’s most dedicated and

Reunion Recap
Reunion 2014 took place on campus June 6-8, 2014. All alumni
were welcomed to come back to Manhattanville for a weekend of
exciting events, and there were special celebrations for the classes
of 1944, 1949, 1954,1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989,
1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2013. President Jon Strauss and Jean
Strauss welcomed the nearly 450 alumni, family and friends that
joined in the festivities.

Reunion began with tea and conversation with former Manhattanville
President Elizabeth J. McCormack ’44. Elizabeth shared some of her
experiences as well as some highlights from her book, No Ordinary
Life. Attendees were also encouraged to spend time in the library with
archivist Lauren Ziarko, as well as in Heritage Hall with Jean Strauss.
Friday night saw all alumni come together for a kick-off cocktail party
and dinner. Reunion guests were invited to spend the remainder of the
evening in the pub with a Night of Comedy. Young Alumni were given
the chance to relive some of their best memories with a pub crawl.
On Saturday morning, the spotlight was on current students,
faculty and, of course, alumni during numerous educational
sessions. Professor Peter Gardella highlighted the history of the
O’Byrne Chapel while former Professor Kwan Ha Yim discussed
the Kim Dynasty in Korea. Susan Luick Good ’69 led a lively
conversation about the many roles Manhattanville women have
played in the workplace, and Professor Gillian Hannum facilitated a
panel of current students who shared what life is currently like on
campus. Throughout the morning, Jean Strauss presented “The
Journey to Heritage Hall: Honoring Manhattanville’s Legacy,” a
program that truly brings the College’s extraordinary history to life.
Attendees were given two appealing lunch options on Saturday
afternoon; some chose to spend time on the Quad at the Reunion
barbeque, while a record number attended the traditional Reunion
luncheon. The luncheon included President Strauss’ State of the
College, an update on many of the community’s unique accomplishments over the past year. Four extraordinary alumni were
honored during the luncheon as recipients of the 2014 Alumni
Awards in a special ceremony led by Alumni Association Board
President Joseph Narus ’86. Congratulations to our award winners
for their distinguished accomplishments within their fields of work
and dedicated service, both to the College and others: Diane
Mulcahy Coffey ’64 and Ann McGlinchy Grady ’64, Distinguished
Alumni Award; Daphne Skouras Root ’44, Outstanding Alumni
Service Award; and Frank Furbacher ’09, Recent Graduate Service
Award.
Saturday afternoon continued with individual class meetings, a
family friendly scavenger hunt, and a “Manhattanville in the 80’s”
trivia game. Alumni were also invited to special on-campus receptions- one to thank our most “Loyal Valiants” at an invitation-only
event at the President’s Cottage, as well as one for faculty members to reconnect with their former students.

Reunion Recap
Reunion attendees celebrated into the evening with an All-Class
cocktail party and Gala dinners in the castle. The night ended with
the 5th annual Throwback Alumni Pub Party where alumni enjoyed
snapping photos in the festive photo booth and dancing the night
away.
Sunday morning featured a trio of Reunion traditions. The morning
began with a Mass in the Mother O’Byrne Chapel, including
the moving Rose of Remembrance Ceremony for all deceased
alumni. The Mass also included traditional Manhattanville
Liturgical Music featuring an alumnae choir, led by Barbara
Catoggio Kullen ’63. Following Mass, the Class of 1964 had the
opportunity to remember classmates who have been lost over the
years during the Class of 1964 Memorial Tree Planting ceremony.
Reunion closed on Sunday afternoon with a luncheon where
attendees were able to take a look back on the weekend and
begin planning their next trips back to campus!

Reunion gave you a chance to reminisce with classmates and
relive some of your favorite Manhattanville memories while
creating new ones to last a lifetime.
