Approximately 2,000 students from across Texas attended the 2016 Private School Interscholastic Association
Academic State Meet held on April 30 at Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth. These students qualified to
participate in the PSIA State Meet by placing 1st or 2nd individually in one or more contests at the PSIA District
Meets held at 24 area tournaments across Texas earlier this spring.
PSIA serves 274 member schools this year and continues to provide the most comprehensive, academic,
extracurricular program in the nation for privatelyschooled students in grades 1st8th, offering 19 contests with
awards in 59 gradelevel events. Contests include a wide spectrum of advanced curricula in mathematics, science,
social studies, listening, reading, vocabulary, speaking, writing, art, and music. POPCS was represented by 29 students (19 Elementary and 10 Middle School) at the State Meet who competed in
37 categories against students from over 155 other schools. Medals were awarded for 1st through 6th place at the
State Level. Our Prince of Peace students brought home 11 medals. The Elementary Team placed 3rd in the State in the Elementary Division, and the Middle School Team placed
4th in the State in the Middle School Division. Early Learning Center

Our first POPCS Volunteer of the Month is Rachael Cobb.
Rachael is married to Michael and she also has two
daughters: Madison Green, currently a senior at Texas
Woman's University, and Mackenzie Green, in Grade 11 at
POPCS. Madison is a 2012 graduate of POPCS. At TWU, she
is a collegian in Alpha Omicron Pi. Mackenzie plays varsity
soccer. She's the football trainer, along with the team
manager for Volleyball and Softball. Mackenzie is a High
School Ambassador and, last but not least, a member of
Bleacher Creatures. Rachael is originally from Vietnam. She and her family
currently reside in Frisco. As a family they like to spend their
free time at their lakehouse in Pittsburgh, TX. Rachael and her family have been at POPCS for 11 years
and could not be happier. Rachael says she could not
volunteer without the loving support of her amazing family.
Eleven years ago they made the best decision for their family
and could not be happier to surround themselves with the
loving and giving families at POPCS. Rachael says she is
unable to choose a favorite volunteer activity because
everything she does to serve the school is her favorite. She
says she cannot pinpoint a particular project because

Volunteer of the Month Bob Schlossin Many, many thanks to ALL of the students who participated as part of the 2016 Academic Team in PSIA this year. Your commitment and passion for learning is inspiring. Congratulations to all! Thank you also to the wonderful
coaches who helped prepare our students for the District Competition and to the parents who supported our program
in a variety of ways.
Mrs. Pevehouse and Mrs. Grant would like to send a multitude of thanks to our PSIA coaches that helped to prepare
the students for the State Contest: Mrs. Higginbotham, Mrs. Dobbs, Mrs. Sosinski, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Herget, and
Mrs. Pevehouse. Thank you to Mrs. Dobbs for being the volunteer coordinator and making sure the day ran
smoothly. Special thanks to our PSIA Parents that volunteered, shopped, donated, and drove to TCU to support our
students, and the deepest gratitude to our POPCS Administration for supporting academic competition. THE Middle School Event of the Year!
THE Social and Lockin!
Middle School Spring Social was an awesome event! 6th 8th graders had a blast with friends dancing, goofing off in
the photo booth, playing laser tag, and eating snow cones from the Kona Ice truck. There was a raffle and lots of fun
prizes. Everyone had a great time at the social!
Our second Volunteer of the Month for April is Bob
Schlossin. Bob is married to Denise and they have two
children: Sammy, a sophomore and Olivia, in grade 4.
Sammy enjoys his afterschool and weekend job as well as
being an early childhood volunteer at church which Olivia
focuses the majority of her free time on golf and is practicing
for her first tournament in June. Bob is selfemployed as the
owner of North Texas Shade, Inc. They design and install
retractable patio and roof systems for commercial and
residential applications. Bob is originally from Buffalo, New
York, and relocated to the DFW area in 2009. He enjoys
riding and racing his offroad motorcycle as well as RVing with
his family. They have three dogs, 1 cat and 15 fish.
Bob and his family have been part of POPCS for 4 years.
When asked why he volunteers, Bob says he feels very
blessed that his children are able to attend POPCS. The
faculty and staff are fantastic and they truly live out their
Christian commitment with the love and support they give to
all of the kids. Bob says his favorite volunteer activity is the
Morning DropOff Line because he loves seeing the kids
come to school in the morning ready to start their day. He also
really enjoys spending time with the POPCS faculty at drop
off line. They have so much fun!
POPCS is honored to have such a devoted and faithful
volunteer as Bob and we are thankful for his service to the
school!
*********************************************** A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL OUR
Every year, the middle school teachers participate in the teacher board for the annual online auction by inviting
students to bid on the opportunity to spend a night at school! After the middle school spring social, groups of 46
friends trek from the north gym to the middle school with the teachers they purchased for a night of food, fun, and
games with friends. In years past, the student groups ran around the school in a campuswide scavenger hunt,
including games that tested students' physical and mental abilities. This year, the teachers planned a crosscampus
adventure of crazy games, from tictactoe relays to kickball, life size Battleship to Human Hungry Hippos and
MinutetoWinIt challenges. Each teacher's team represented themselves with team colors, names, and chants, and
they worked together to complete the activities. Lots of food and drinks fueled the excitement until it was time to
settle down for movies. The most sleep anyone got this year was about 3 hours, but the groggy day to follow was so
worth the fun everyone had at the Middle School LockIn!

Hannah's commitment to the Arts has been apparent both in our choral and drama departments, along with her many
other activities, both at school and in our community.
We are proud of all of our senior Fine Arts students, any of which would have represented us well.
Congratulations to Hannah Sandlin, her High School Fine Arts career has been well done! Hannah is headed to
Texas Tech in the fall to study early elementary education. Hannah, we hope to see you on the Texas Tech
theatre stage as well!
Camping in the Zone is looking for more awesome campers

Before you go... Mr. Hahn Closes the School Year with OneonOne Senior Visits
Ever wonder what Headmaster Mr. Hahn does as the school year comes to a close? One of his favorite things to do
is an "exit interview" and visit with each of the graduating Seniors. He has done this with every member of each
class for the last nine years. As this class is the largest in school history, with 84 graduates, it takes two weeks to complete the visits. Mr. Hahn
says, "I learn so much from our kids. It is very humbling to hear the kind things they share about their teachers,
coaches and experiences here. It is also helpful to learn things we need to do better. I wish our current parents could
hear what they share".
As of this writing, 47 of 84 interviews have been completed. One of the most telling questions is "Based on a
scale of 110, how has POPCS prepared you academically for the challenges and opportunities you will face next
year?" The student response to that question averages 8.9! Of the 47 students interviewed todate, 45 say
they would come back to POPCS for high school if they had to do it all over again.
The meetings include time to reflect, usually some laughs, occasionally tears and always end with a prayer of
blessing! Trash to Treasure!!!

POPCS Students Share How They Spend Time With God
Mrs. Brandon's First Grade Class Reminds Us to Spend Time Daily with God
Students in Ruth Brandon's first grade class shared their stories of spending time with God during a recent lower
school chapel and their message has touched many hearts at Prince of Peace.
Mrs. Brandon shared how God, the creator of the universe, who sent His Son to be the Savior of the world, wants to
spend time with you and me. Numbers 11:17 reads, in part, "I will come down and speak with you there." In a video
presentation, her students answered such questions as: How do you spend time with God? How do you talk to
God? What did you hear from God? Their answers which you can see here offer a message to us all.
"I went to chapel that morning and was again reminded of why I send my children to Prince of Peace," said POPCS
mom Jody Sartin. "It confirms my commitment to our school and the Christian education my children receive here."
Here is the link to the video that was played at the end of the presentation.
Then, they hopped on a POP bus and headed to Top Golf for
lunch and some tee time. It was a beautiful day and
everyone had a blast!. POPCS High School Spring College Fair Colleges Represent!

Matching Gifts Make a Difference!
POPCS Family Night
JOIN US & SUPPORT POPCS May 24 Yogurtville
If you've made a financial contribution to Prince of Peace Christian School this year, please consider whether your (or
your spouse's) employer offers a matching gift benefit.
Through matching gifts, companies donate to those organizations that are meaningful to their employees by
matching, in part or fully, the amount of the donation made. That means your gift to Prince of Peace Christian School
may be increased or even as much as doubled by simply filling out the required forms of your employer! Over the
past five years, our school has received $186,191 from matching fund programs.
If you're not sure whether your employer has a matching fund, check our partial list below, or ask your employer's
benefits representative. Keep in mind that some companies require the request for matching funds to be made within
a specified time frame so don't delay!
Some financial products organizations, such as Thrivent, offer directed gifts or other ways of supporting their clients'
or members' nonprofit organizations of choice. Be sure to check with your representative to see if you're eligible to
participate in these benefits.
As always, we offer our great thanks to all our donors, and to their employers who offer matching gifts, in support of

Students were learning shapes in the project before, but by using iPads and Book Creator, the 2nd grade team was
able to do the project more efficiently and take students deeper. Taking pictures is much easier with an iPad than a
film camera, which allowed students to see their pictures instantly and begin creating their books right away.
Additionally, the 2nd grade team added the challenge of having students articulate their understanding of the shapes
through a recorded explanation. As an adult, it's easy to describe a sphere, but it's challenging for a 2nd grade
student to describe a sphere using math vocab like vertices, edges, and faces. Furthermore, by having the students
articulate their understanding in their own words, the teachers could really tell if the students had a proper
understanding of 2D and 3D shapes. The culmination of their project is next week when they use their books to teach
other classes about shapes. Here's a sneak peak of "The Super Shapes" by Zach and Emma in Mrs. Fitzpatrick's class: "The Super Shapes" by Zach and Emma
Living the POPCS Mission in Video Production Class
Can you recite the POPCS mission statement? It's a fun memory challenge, but it's also the focus of everything we
do at POPCS.
Prince of Peace Christian School and Early Learning Center provides a Christcentered, exemplary
education, equipping leaders for service and success in the 21st Century. "We are preparing the generation the world has been waiting for."
So what does the mission look like in a classroom? About a month ago, Mr. Weiss' high school video production
students began working on a collaborative project with Dr. Mary Manz Simon from ALOA (Adult Lutherans Organized
for Action).
Christcentered: At the start of the year, it is understood that because of Christ's sacrifice on the cross, every project
in Video Production class will be done to serve others. If we go viral on YouTube, it will be in service to others, not
because we made fools of ourselves or filmed a cute puppy. Dr. Simon scripted seven different informational videos
for senior adults to use in their congregations and ministries. While visiting Dallas for a conference, she stopped at
Prince of Peace for a few hours to film. In the weeks following, students edited the videos.
Exemplary Education: Throughout the editing process, students learned multiple skills such as: finding legal
imagery, invoicing (special thanks to a visit by video producer Steve Sosinski), animating photos, sequence
recursions, recording a screencast of an iPhone, and color grading footage.
Disciples and leaders for service and success: Additionally, they had to learn how to serve a client. In reflection
after the project, senior Jake Veach said, "I learned that sometimes when you are doing a service you have to keep
in mind that you are providing for someone else, not yourself."
This example summarizes what we do at POPCS. We teach content and skills to equip students, the students learn
to use their gifts for service to others, and we do our best to keep Christ's sacrifice in the forefront of our minds while
we work.

Makerspace We Can Do It Ourselves!
Creatively Brings These Students Together in the Library to Invent!
Makerspaces are DIY (doityourself) areas where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. This week, the
fourth grade students turned the library into a Makerspace by using their creativity with a simple box. Mrs. Griffin read
"What Do You Do With An Idea?" and "What To Do With A Box" to get the juices flowing. Then the students were put
into groups of two or three to work together to create ONE project idea using their two/three boxes. They had a five
minute brainstorming session, followed by 20 minutes of work time using only scissors, crayons/markers/colored
pencils, and tape. The last five minutes were used to present the projects. As you can see by the following pictures,
originality and imagination overflowed in abundance!

Ask anyone on the street, "Which automobile best holds its value?" You are certain to get a strong opinion
Mercedes, Toyota, Lexus, Honda Accord, Chevrolet, or similar. You will get opinions and memorized advertising, but
rarely will you get facts. The SR&D class decided to set the record straight by researching values and determining
just which model best holds its value. They quickly discovered that data abounded but assimilating it to actually
answer this question was a formidable effort. It took the entire class pooling their research which is the essence of
the SR&D class. The students settled upon a clever technique for selfconsistently calculating depreciated value. They even fitted a curve to the data and came out with an equation describing the results. In this article you have it truth, at last. But, we cannot usurp in Eagle Express. Celebration of Service & Gratitude for Craig and Carin Swanson WHAT IS THE
SHOP FOR POP PROGRAM?
SHOP FOR POP is an essential PTF fundraiser/gift card program in which
retailers sell gift cards to POPCS at a 2% to 13% discount. Families buy
these cards at face value and redeem them at face value. POPCS gets
the difference in revenue. Just purchase the gift cards from the school to
use at a favorite store or restaurant. Money earned is donated to the
school for special projects. Past earnings have been used to fund
bleachers and lights for the football field, as well as the current cafeteria
campaign.
There were tears, hugs and a lot of laughter at the faculty and administration reception to honor High School
Principal, Craig Swanson and Theology Department Chair, Carin Swanson. The Swansons are moving to California
as Mr. Swanson begins his new poisistion as Executive Principal at Rancho Christian School in Temecula,
California. Mr. Hahn presented them with service plaques and gave Mr. Swanson a custommade birdhouse that represented
the schools he has been associated with and his years here at Prince of Peace. Mr. Swanson collects birdhouses
because it reminds him of Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
The plaques represented favorite memories and personal sayings with a note of thanks stating:
"Thank you for giving of yourself and pouring into the lives of the
children and families of Prince of Peace Christian School" The Swanson family, with daughter Tessa (2016 POPCS graduate), have been at POPCS for 11 years. They will me

FREE DRESS DAYS
Article By: POPCS Junior Kyra McIntosh, POPCS Medical Intern
Recently I spent the day with Dr. MahoneJohnson, an Oncologist with the Plano Cancer Institute, as part of a
medical shadowing program. For someone who has ambitions of becoming a doctor, it was comparable to being
invited to tour the Chocolate Factory with Willy Wonka as your guide.
First I was ushered into Dr. MahoneJohnson's office where we discussed
medical terms and reviewed the day's agenda. Then I was shown the pharmacy
where the chemotherapy infusions are prepared. The nurses invited me to
observe how they administer treatments to the patients by inserting infusion
needles into ports that deliver the medicine directly to patients' hearts; the
patients were so welcoming and supportive of my desire to learn. That lead me to the laboratory to learn how they examine blood for abnormalities. This was a When you spend $250 or more in a month, your children will enjoy a free

microscope after that to look for more abnormalities in shape and size. I then
spoke to the research manager who discussed different kinds of research being performed to test the efficacy of different types of chemotherapy drugs. Next I met Dr. Kinsella, another Oncologist in the practice, who introduced me to
her scribe. The scribe discussed his role as a person who charts physician
patient encounters. I was then lucky enough to be introduced to two patients
who, again, supported the educational opportunity with open arms. The attending
physician spent some time discussing aspects of hematology and various type of cancer. Lastly, I met the administrator who recapped much of what I learned and explained the importance of her role from
both an operations stand point and a business perspective. My day spent in the shadow of Dr. MahoneJohnson was
the first of two days I will spend with her. I am very much looking forward to spending another day with her in

announce the next Head Coach of the POPCS Boys Basketball Program. I believe that the
Lord has led us to Stephen Mawire. Coach Mawire comes to us after serving the past 4
years as the Marketing Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach at The Woodlands
Christian Academy. He has an outstanding record as a head coach having also led the boys
basketball program at Burton Academy in Arlington for 3 years prior to his time at TWCA. Following are some of his accomplishments serving as head coach:
Amassed 168 wins, an average of 24 wins per season
Made the playoffs each year
TAPPS 3A State Runnerup in 2013
Twice selected as the TAPPS 3A Coach of the Year
Over and above these accomplishments, Coach Mawire is
invested in helping young men grow both spiritually and
intellectually.
Coach Cantrell offered the following comment/observation:
The addition of Coach Mawire and his family is another piece of
the puzzle that continues to move our basketball program
forward. This year we have been blessed to add Coach Burke
and now with the addition of Coach Mawire, we are poised as a
program to reach new heights. I am very excited about the future
of our program. The addition of these two young minds has us in
a place to do great things!
Coach Burke offered these thoughts:
I want the POPCS basketball family to accept Coach Mawire with the same open arms that
were extended to me when I became part of the boys basketball staff. I believe together,
players and coaching staff, we can accomplish great things. I am excited about the future and
believe we are on a great trajectory moving forward.
Coach Mawire stated earlier today:
I am super excited to be joining the POPCS community and bringing my energy and
enthusiasm to the boys basketball program. I look forward to working with both Coach
Cantrell and Coach Burke as we continue to build the POPCS basketball program.
In addition to serving as our head coach, Coach Mawire will be serving as the Marketing
Director for his father's ministry, WRNO World Wide Radio.
I believe that this basketball staff is one of the best in Texas and are very excited to see the
program and players grow under their direction.

Curt's Corner WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither
death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor
depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our
Lord." Romans 8: 3739.
Graduation the end of another school year finals and a host of activities. Last week we were entertained by our
Middle School students with a presentation entitled, "Seussical". It contained many of the stories of Dr. Seuss. You
may know that there is another Dr. Seuss book that is often given to graduates entitled, "Oh the Places You'll Go".
The end of a school year, graduation, transfer to another school or getting a job all offer new places to discover and
explore. In his book, Dr. Seuss writes, "You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer
yourself in any direction you choose." Just think of the numerous opportunities in your future. Maybe it's college, a
mission trip, a fabulous vacation or a new home and school. Some of these are exciting, challenging and enjoyable,
but some are going to be tough and very possibly scary. Is there any hope, any comfort in the above passage? Paul reminds us that God is ALWAYS WITH US and no matter who or what challenges us, God will never fail us. Remember Joshua appointed by God to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land? Quite a task, especially
knowing of their rebellion and wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. God simply tells him to be strong and
courageous because wherever he went, God would go with him. He was told not to be discouraged, to keep God's
Word on his lips, not to turn away or forget God but to obey and follow His leading. Not an easy task for Joshua,
but in faith he moved forward, overcame obstacles, changed and corrected courses and fulfilled his mission.
As we leave behind this school year, we will move in various directions but under the same promise. God is with
each of us. He will never leave us or forsake us and nothing can separate us from His love. The same Spirit who
first brought us to faith will cause our faith to grow and mature as we nourish it through the Word and sacraments. Be advised, that as Christians, we will encounter people who may mock us, call us weak and insecure, avoid us or
even threaten us with words or actions. We are never alone. God accepts and blesses each of us. He will give us
strength and security in our weakest moments, He lives in us and will guide and lead us in the paths He wants us
to go. He knows the condition of our heart and mind and will listen to and answer our prayers.
Where do we go from here? Wherever He leads us! Through His Spirit He has reached out and has a firm grip on
each of our arms. He is the Almighty God, our Savior and Lord, our Advocate, our Comforter and in Him we are
convinced that nothing from the past, the present or the future can separate us from Him or His love. Yes, we have
brains in our head and feet in our shoes, so let God lead us in a way that He will choose.
