National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (NCALNE) options
Literacy Aotearoa Training provides two different options to obtain the National Certificate
in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (NCALNE), Level 5. NCALNE has two Strands (or
options) the 81 credit NCALNE (Educator) qualification or the 40 credit NCALNE (Vocational/
Workplace Trainer) qualification. We offer both of these options in our programmes.
The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), from 2015 requires that Foundation Educators
must hold or be enrolled to obtain a minimum of the NCALNE (Vocational/ Workplace
Trainer) qualification. At present this requirement applies to the following funds:



Student Achievement Component (SAC) Levels 1 and 2 (competitive and noncompetitive, including the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training initiative)
Intensive Literacy and Numeracy (ILN)
Workplace Literacy
If you a tutor, co-ordinator, manger or a PTE in the Foundation sector who is seeking this
qualification for yourself or your staff we have a variety of delivery options available. Our
enrolment form is designed for you to state which option you wish to enrol for – Educator
or Vocational/ Workplace Trainer (often referred to as Vocational or Voc.)

Both of these options are a Level 5 Qualification on the NZQA Framework. Both options
require you to complete a practicum of a minimum of 40 hours, 20 hours of which can be
planning and 20 hours of which must be face-to face delivery. Any practicum you complete
must also be attested to by a person who has an adult education background (such as a
senior tutor or manager). It is your responsibility to find suitable students to work with
should you not currently be working in the area of adult education.
For the Educator option you have up to two years to complete the qualification while for the
Vocational option you have up to one year to complete the qualification. Face-to-face
delivery occurs through the initial group of Workshops and you can gather and send in your
evidence at any time up to the one or two year period, as suits your situation.
