It’s with great pleasure that I can write the introduction to
the catalogue this year. After ten years away from Green-tech
it is good to be back and see first-hand how the business has
grown. The landscape industry and Green-tech has witnessed
many changes over the past ten years both internally and in
the wider market place. It is reassuring to know that through
all these changes Green-tech still retains its core values of
good, reliable and honest service, a saying that was created
by business owners Richard and Rachel Kay and still drives
the business today. Towards the end of 2013 we received the
biggest compliment in the industry by being awarded, the
‘Exceptional Service’ award by BALI. The award is testimony

(starch based) and oxo-biodegradable polypropylene. This
combination gives customers all the qualities of a Tubex shelter
(flared rim, laserline and twin wall rigidity), whilst ensuring that
it degrades in a more controllable fashion.

Service Life
Degradation time frame
The time frame in which the product degrades will always be
dependent on the environment it is in. Many factors contribute
to this process, with the important ones being sunlight and
bacteria. Sunlight is needed to break up the polymer chains
whilst bacteria is needed to digest these small chains. It is
expected that a 5Y product will offer 5 years of service life,
with a further 5 years of degradation.

• Allows water and air to percolate through the wool layer and helps to retain
moisture in time of drought.
• The matting/roll acts as an insulator and absorbs heat from the sun thus

Mona irrigation for Ocean Road
Ocean Road is a major part of the South Shields town
centre redevelopment programme. The improvements to
Ocean Road will provide a more attractive and pleasant
pedestrian route which draws visitors to and from the
Foreshore and Town Centre.
Green-tech was approached by South Tyneside Council to
develop a hard landscape, tree planting solution for the
Ocean Road development. The council were constrained
by the tree pit sizes on the Ocean Road development due
to existing utilities and services within the high street,
however required the correct equipment to in place for the
trees to become established.
Green-tech proposed a solution, with CAD drawings and
technical data that would enable South Tyneside Council
to fulfil their vision for Ocean Road, yet also meet the needs
of the 70+ trees that would be planted. Green-tech’s own
in-house product specification team, spent one week on
site to advise on installation of the Mona Plant System and
ArborRaft System. They worked with South Tyneside’s own
contractors to ensure the installation team was fully trained
and competent.

1. Measure the area to be irrigated by the Mona Plant System
Links.
2. Dig down to a depth that allows 150mm of growing
media to sit above each tank and below the plant’s roots.
3. Lay out the tanks and connect end to end with the
flexible pipes and ‘O’ rings.
4. Place an end stop on the final tank in the formation.
5. Upright filler pipes should be mounted at a the start of the
links or a maximum interval of every fifth connected link.
6. Back-fill with growing media and plants as per specification.
7. Fill with water until the float within the filler pipe rises to
the fill level.

Simple and effective, the Mona Plantsava system is the most
reliable and natural way to maintain effective irrigation of plants.
Ring 24
By using the plants natural capillary action and allowing the
plants to feed and water themselves you gain bigger, stronger
and longer lasting plants. Perfect for all types of planters,
both indoor and outdoor, flower beds, window boxes and
hanging baskets. An environmentally friendly product: 100%
water efficient and made from recycled material in the UK.
There are nine sizes of Plantsava available, each tank can be
simply installed at the bottom of the planter where it will act
as a reservoir and feed the plant as and when required. The
plant will only take on the water it requires and in optimum
conditions will require refilling once every six weeks.

Mona Plant System Rings have been developed specifically after
requests from specifiers and contractors wishing to effectively
and efficiently irrigate a tree rootball or a planter. It is the most
efficient method of ensuring quick establishment and a healthy
start for trees and plants.
Mona Plant System Rings have been installed in many projects
across the UK and Europe. Particularly suitable for interior
landscape projects with large planter installations. Ensures
quick establishment of plants and healthy root development,
provides a more robust solution to the watering of large trees
reservoirs surround the rootball to provide a continuous source
of water. The system forms a ring around the rootball to ensure
optimal growth. Ideal for installation of rootball trees in hard
landscaped areas.
Installation
1. Measure the dimensions of the rootball or planter and
select the correct size Mona Ring. For bespoke sizes
please contact the gtspecifier technical team.
2. Cover with growing media, ensuring there is a 150mm
depth between roots/rootball and the Mona Plant
System Ring.
3. Ensure the upright filler pipe stands proud of the nursery
line/planter.
4. Back-fill with growing media and plants as per specification
5. Fill with water until the float within the filler pipe rises to
the fill level.

1. The Plantsava system comprises of a reservoir tank, filler
pipe, float and capillary leg.
2. Insert the capillary leg into the central hole of the reservoir tank.
3. Place the float inside the filler pipe.
4. Insert the filler pipe into the secondary hole within the
reservoir tank.
5. Fill the capillary leg(s) with a small amount of growing media.
6. Insert the assembled Plantsava into the planter, ensuring
the top of the filler pipe is level with the top of the planter.
7. Fill with growing media and plant your choice of plants
ensure the depth between the plants roots and top of the
reservoir is no more than 150mm.

A major part of the Coronation Street
move was the introduction of a tree
onto the street as the uprooting of the
existing tree was considered highly
impractical. The tree required planting

The gt Resi-Grille and guard have been developed after
requests from contractors across the UK, requiring a tree grille
that offers the aesthetic and porous properties of resibond. The
cast iron grille has a recess of 50mm that allows the grille to
be filled with resibond to make a porous surface. When filled
the gt Resi-Grille supports the load of street traffic protecting
the rootball of the tree. Not only does the new gt Resi-Grille
look contemporary, it is robust and hard wearing, it is able to

During the specification period Green-tech also discussed
the feasibility of using a resin-bound system within the
raised planters and the suitability of this type of installation.
Coventry City Council in partnership with the Landscape
Architect viewed the resin bound system as an integral part
of the overall project design and were keen to find a solution
that could be installed without compacting the soil yet still
maintain the look and feel of the whole project.
Green-tech provided Coventry Public Realm and the
Landscape Architect with a bespoke resin-bound tree grille
solution, modified to support itself within each planter
without the risk of soil compaction. The team produced a
number of CAD drawings to illustrate the suitability and ease
of installation of the grilles plus, the gtResi-grilles were finished
within Green-tech’s own production facility, to ensure that
each component was finished to the highest specification.

tree planters within the Coventry Public Realm project.
Green-tech’s own Mona Plant System was the ideal solution
offering a discreet, non-mechanical and effective irrigation
system that is ideal for urban planting.
The six raised tree planters located in the Cox Street and
Gosford Street area of the city centre, will complete an
already impressive regeneration project. There is far more
pedestrian traffic than vehicles in this part of the city due
to businesses and the university being in close proximity.
The works therefore have been designed to reflect this
and provide a pedestrian orientated zone with widened
footways and the introduction of a no-priority central
junction. Removal of traffic signals and a 20mph speed
limit will improve the safety at the junction by promoting
motorist awareness and cautionary driving.
gt Resibond is an easy to install porous resin bonded surface
layer of aggregate, suitable for the surrounds of trees within
hard-landscaped areas. gt Resibond can be used in areas where
conventional means of mulching with loose materials, may not
be practical due to the constant displacement of the material
increasing maintenance time and costs. Regarded in the industry
as a ‘resi-bound’ system, gt Resibond relies on the aggregate and
the resin being agitated together in mixer, and then spread over
the prepared base with hand floats and trowels.

The gtFortress Tree Grille is a stylish and practical tree grille
with the urban setting in mind. The design allows paving to be
continued almost up to the tree trunk, protecting the trees root
system from urban traffic and soil compaction but also allowing
rainwater through to maximise irrigation and urban drainage.
To ensure the maintenance of the tree a Mona Irrigation Unit
can be fitted seamlessly into the grille and paving scheme. As
a standard item, the gtFortress Tree Grille is ideal for use with
block paving, but dimensions of the inner trays can be altered
to suit other paving styles. As with all gt tree grilles, the inner
trays or grille sections are fastened with security fixings and are
fully removable allowing the tree to be removed and replaced
if required.

directly to a level concrete pad foundation around the tree pit.
To avoid trip-hazard set pad foundation so that grille is flush with
finished paving level (ragged legs can be added if required).
• The inner trays can then be installed and fastened into place
using the fixing fillets, through-fixed to a captive nut in the
outer frame braces.
• These fillets can then be used as lifting brackets if the inner
tray needs removing at a later date.
• Outer frame can be supplied toe in or toe out depending on
site needs, although toe out is a better structural unit.

gt Dales Collection Tree Grilles are manufactured entirely in the
UK from 100% recycled materials, and are themselves 100%
recyclable. Made from engineering grade 250 cast iron they
are expected to last up to 100 years in normal use - even with
minimal or no maintenance and painting. This is because 250
grade cast iron is not only incredibly durable, it also does not
rust in the traditional sense - in fact over a 100 year timescale,

Little Lion Gardens has developed at an impressive rate
over the last four years, the land and gardens incorporate
wildflowers, hedgerows and shrubs for wildlife to inhabit
and is gradually becoming established. In addition to the
plants and trees, Little Lion gardens is home to geese,
ducks, quail, goats, sheep and pigs all attracting more and
more visitors each year.
The GRB Plus installed at the entrance to the gardens
covers an area of 250 square metres, it assists with drainage
of the parking area and is able to support the ground for a
wide range of visiting vehicles. Little Lion Gardens chose to
finish the installation with white gravel that fitted with the
overall surroundings of the area.

Coir rolls are an organic living revetment that provide erosion
control and rapid vegetation establishment. Coir rolls can be an
excellent technique for establishing marginal vegetation around
lake edges, streams and rivers banks. Coir rolls are cost-effective,
organic revetments that can be suitable alternatives to hard
revetments in many applications.
Coir Rolls are manufactured in the UK using virgin mattress
type coir fibre, they are machine filled in order to maintain
a consistent density of coir fibre. The coir roll netting is
manufactured from UV stabilised polypropylene multi filament
net in a diamond mesh pattern 50mm x 50mm aperture. Each
yarn has a minimum tensile strength of 0.84kN and the end
of each roll is closed by stitching with a 3mm diameter multi
filament braided UV stabilised polypropylene yarn.

Applications:
This product should only be used in situations where a
compact soil structure is absolutely unavoidable. In order

The HDPE core of gt Deckdrain geocomposite provides a
free flowing drainage void within the structure. The studs are
designed to support the geotextile which is bonded to the
core to ensure that it doesn’t deform into the drainage passage
under the pressure of the fill material. Unlike in pipes this
geocomposite drainage core design allows flow in all directions.
gt Deckdrain is durable and sufficiently robust to resist the
mechanical stresses imposed during installation and then on

Wildflower Seed
John Chambers is the leading brand of British native
wildflower seed in the UK, supplying only high quality,
hand cleaned seed to Landscape Architects, Contractors

Selecting the correct wildflowers for a project can
be a daunting task, at John Chambers the team has
researched soil types, environmental considerations and
flowering periods of each individual stocked seed to
provide the best possible advice. We have developed a
portfolio of wildflower seed mixtures that are specifically
suited to particular growing environments and soil types,
producing healthy blooms and a balanced mix of flowers.
Wildflower Site Preparation
The site should be weed free. Annual weeds should be
controlled by mechanical means or by the use of contact
based herbicide. Perennial weeds, for example docks
thistle, nettles and couch grass can be dealt with using
a translocated herbicide such as Round-Up. Cultivate to
achieve a fine seed bed and then roll to ensure firmness.
The best results are obtained when there is good contact
between the soil and the seeds.
Sowing Times
Sowing can best be achieved by mixing the seed with dry
sand or sifted topsoil and evenly broadcast. It is important
that the seed is in contact with moisture in the soil so the
seedbed should be lightly raked and then rolled.

Beepol Lodge
Our Pollinating Bee Log is made
from an air dried natural FSC timber
log with natural bark which gives
good insulation to the developing
larvae inside the tubes and means
you do not need to move the log
indoors during winter. Being a
natural product the appearance
may vary.
The Beepol features an inner
doorway which can be set to only
allow incoming bees, which gives
the option of allowing movement of
the bumblebee colony at night to a
new pollinating area. The anti-wax
moth door also provides a defensible
entrance to the lodge and you will
find that a guard bumblebee will
position itself just behind the flipup perspex door. It is fascinating to
see how easily the bees master the
entrance door.
All the tubes are natural drilled canes
which are durable and can be used
year after year.
The pollinating bee log should be
hung on a wall, fence or on a tree
using it’s natural sea grass hanging
rope. The ideal hanging height is
between ground level and 1.5m
metres. Try to hang the log against a
firm upright to prevent it swinging in
mid-air. Choose a sunny position which
preferably gets some morning sun.

grooves which allows the bat to climb
into the preferred chamber. Designed

Rite Edge aluminium landscape lawn edging has been
designed by both landscape architects and landscape
contractors to offer greater flexibility in design and installation
over any other edging material. Rite Edge is manufactured from
strong, lightweight aluminium that will not rust, crack or rot like
steel, wood or plastic.
Now there is a quick and easy way to join Rite-Edge without
the stepped joint. The new flush joining pack provides 14 small
pieces of Rite-Edge that enable two longer pieces to be joined
together still using the unique telescopic system but resulting
a flat face finish. The precision engineered joint is still achieved
when using the joiners.
There are many applications where Rite-L-Edge should be used
instead of Rite-Edge lawn and border edging, but the general
rule of thumb is that if the surface to be edged requires any
form of mechanical compaction then the most suitable depth
of Rite-L-Edge should be used.

Plantsava
The Plantsava delivers water and oxygen directly to the plants
roots where it is needed most. By installing a Plantsava tank at
the base of your planter the plant can be easily watered but at
a much reduced frequency. The Plantsava tank is easily installed
at the base of the planter and then covered with soil ready
for planting. The tank is filled through the filler pipe, a float in
the filler pipe will tell you when the reservoir is full. The water
then travels from the roots upwards for up to 6 weeks without
the need for refilling. The system helps your plants establish a
healthy root system, which means healthy looking plants.
