Global economic shift –
how ready is India?
3 September 2015 | 3:20-4:05 p.m.
45 mins
India is witnessing a phase of changes in economic
reforms. With GST, BEPS-OECD, FDI norms, reforms
aligned with the much talked about ‘Make in India’
campaign and so on. It won’t be wrong to term it as
a phase of tectonic shift in tax policy environment.
No one has a crystal ball to gaze into economic
forecasting, especially, in the present environment.
Whether it would emergence of a new Asian tiger or
would the economy end-up being into the middleincome trap, is for time to tell, but India Inc needs
to gear-up and be ready, as we move towards
economic transformation. The session will peek
into these reformative changes and where we are
heading towards.

Business craves three “C’s” — Certainty, Consistency
and Clarity. Certainty is being eroded by ongoing
scrutiny of national tax regimes by the OECD
and EC; consistency, while a key objective of the
OECD’s BEPS project, is being impacted by an
ever increasing number of unilateral actions at the
national level; clarity, when the range of global
developments is viewed holistically, seems to exist
only in regard to one new development: Country-byCountry Reporting.
Governments across the length of the globe have
turned their focus to multinational companies and
how much, or how little, tax they are paying. Supranational bodies such as the European Commission
(EU), the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation
for Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD) have taken action and are affecting change.
These pressures are causing companies to step
back and reassess their business, financial and
legal structures. They are looking to their tax
departments to help them find the right answers.
The session will bring these and other tax technical
issues to the front burner for open debate and
discussion.

Off late we have witnessed some amount of
movement in GST with likelihood of a roadmap by
April 2016. Through this session, we would discuss
on the way forward for GST, role of India Inc and
other aspects. The panellists will also discuss on
GST related issues that need to be iron out and
the constructive way ahead for the successful
implementation of this progressive tax reform.

Being GST ready –
It is more than just tax
4 September 2015 | 9:15-10:00 a.m.
45 mins
Day 1 of the Workshop will end with the session
‘GST – The way forward’, which shall outline the GST
framework, its status quo and debate around it.
Taking the discussion to the next level is this session,
where we connect with the business impact model.
GST will be transformational and the implication
on the industry extends well beyond tax. It will
affect every part of business right from financial
reporting, tax accounting, supply chain, technology
enablement and contracts redesign. Training people
within the company and its business eco-system
will be fundamental for the readiness for the new
regime.
To enable a successful implementation, a common
ground has to be identified to bring together various
stakeholders for a common cause. The interdependencies need to be identified upfront at project
initiation and plans to put in place to manage them.
The audience will be primarily be responsible of the
tax function in their respective companies. It would
be imperative to discuss the issues / actions points
from a tax prism, to seamless transition to GST.

Cross border taxes - New
dimensions to be mindful of!
4 September 2015 | 10:00-10:45 a.m.
45 mins
Tax authorities across the world are getting
better connected and demanding much greater
transparency, compliance & co-operation from
all stakeholders including companies, countries
/jurisdictions and intermediaries. Has tax
planning become a dirty word? What additional
considerations one would need to assess /avail the
tax benefits offered by Indian tax code and other
jurisdictions? How are new forms of businesses
with e-commerce, cloud and so on being looked
at especially in the context of evolving concepts
surrounding PE, POEM and so on? What are the top
five planning considerations for a new set- up & for
acquisitions – both inbound and outbound?

It is no longer enough for the tax-head to be
equipped with only the core tax provisions, but it
has become necessary to understand the powers of
the tax collectors and the legal remedies available
with him, which may entail civil or criminal law. In
this session, we will deal with some of these coercive
powers with the tax administrators and the aspects
that a tax-head may want to understand to be able
to effectively deal with any such untoward coercive
measure being used either against his organisation,
any member of the management team or himself.

Now more than ever, tax functions and tax
professionals are faced with an increasingly complex
and ever changing environment. The need for faster,
accurate and reliable information for internal and
external stakeholders is a global trend that will
continue to put pressure on tax departments of today
and tomorrow! The ever-growing list of challenges
thrust upon the tax function is driving a global shift
in the way in which many organisations are evolving
their approach to and focus in effectively managing
tax operations and risk. In the session, the panellists
will speak about the encompassing technology
as a change agent for the tax function in today’s
environment.

With countries competing fiercely for growth,
India has launched an ambitious program, “Make
in India”, to take its economy to the next level
of growth. The main aim of this campaign is to
transform India into a manufacturing leader. The
program is attracting many global investors, which
is evident from agreements signed wth countries
like China, US, Germany etc. The intent of this
program is admirable while the success will only be
achieved, if its execution will be tightly monitored.

Over the last decade, the role of the tax function
in the corporate sector has changed dramatically
due to globalization, technological progress, riskbased approach by tax authorities and the drive for
efficiency to reduce costs. Tax function that adapts
quickly to these new trends will minimize risks
and create value for the business. Moving beyond
numbers, the role has evolved as a leader, team
player who can take on risk, address challenges,
adapt to changes and emerge as a ‘winner’.
