Hamid Fonooni, Ph.D., CPE , serves as Program Director of the MSOS Program. He is a board-certified professional ergonomist with over 25 years of experience in teaching and research in SH&E. After earning his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from University of Cincinnati, he worked in industry as an
Ergonomic Engineer Consultant for about 8 years, where he provided professional services to about 450 companies in Northwest Ohio. He is a professional member of Society of Safety Engineers, where he served as Administrator of Academic Practice Specialty, Chair of Students Activities Committee, and member of Educational Standards
Committee. He has received several acknowledgments and recognitions for his teaching, research, and service, to name a few: 2013 Outstanding Educator of the Year Award, 2012 Culbertson Service Award, ad 2005
Academic Practice Specialty - Safety Professional of the Year Award. Dr. Fonooni is also serves as a volunteer at the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), currently he serves as the
Vice Chair of Operation in the Executive Committee of the Applied Science Accreditation Commission.
Michael Behm, Ph.D., CSP , is an Associate Professor in the Occupational Safety Program at East Carolina
University. His educational background includes a BS in Occupational Safety and Hygiene Management from Millersville University, a MS degree in Environmental Health from Temple University, and a PhD in
Public Health from Oregon State University. Dr. Behm has been a Certified Safety Professional since 1995.
He worked in industry for 10 years as a safety and health professional with Lenox China and Saint-Gobain,
Corporation. Mike is an active member of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s
Construction Sector Occupational Research and Prevention through Design Councils. In 2011, he was awarded a Research Fellowship with the Singapore National Parks Board Centre for Urban Greenery and
Ecology to study safe design aspects of rooftop and vertical greenery systems. Dr. Behm serves as Joint
Coordinator of the Working Commission on Safety and Health in Construction at the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction, in the Netherlands.
Pat Curran, CIH , is a board-‐certified industrial hygienist with over 42 years of experience. This includes working as an OSHA Health Compliance Officer, Manager of an Occupational and
Environmental Health Program within NC Div. of Public Health and Industrial Hygiene Consultant.
He has a broad base of occupational health experience having worked with a many industrial and
governmental entities throughout his career. He is past President of the Carolinas Section of AIHA,
Chair of the NC Industrial Ventilation Conference and teaches continuing education classes in industrial hygiene at UNC-‐Chapel Hill.
Dale Krageschmidt, PH.D., CIH is currently the Supervisor of Industrial Hygiene in the Occupational
Safety Unit at Mayo Clinic Rochester. From September 1997 through July 2006, he taught at the
University of Minnesota Duluth where he achieved the rank of associate professor with tenure in the
Department of Industrial and Mechanical Engineering’s Master of Environmental Health and Safety
Program. Prior to teaching, he had 18 years of industry and consulting experience in industrial hygiene, safety and environmental engineering. He is a board certified industrial hygienist. He has done post-‐doctoral studies at the University of Minnesota and the University of Florida in public health and toxicology. He has won teaching awards, including the Omega Chi Epsilon at UMD. He has written and presented over 50 peer-‐reviewed, published journal articles and professional presentations during his career. He sits on the External Advisory Boards overseeing academic programs for Safety, Health and Environmental curriculum at several universities.
Tarek Abdel-‐Salam, Ph.D., PE , leads and teaches the Hazardous Materials and Environmental
Operations courses. Dr. Abdel-‐Salam‘s industrial experience and research expertise is in the fate and transport of environmental contaminants and in the environmental management systems. Dr.
Abdel-‐Salam’s expertise fulfills a vital need of our training and education program to enhance students’ knowledge of environmental management and regulations to succeed as a generalist in the safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) profession.
Paul L. Knechtges, Ph.D., REHS , Commander, Medical Service Corps, United States Navy (ret.) received a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health from East Carolina University, a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science from George Washington University, and a PhD in Environmental
Biology and Public Policy from George Mason University. He is a Registered Environmental Health
Specialist (REHS) with the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) and Acquisition Certified in Science and Technology Management by the Department of Defense.
David Batts, Ed.D.
, is a MSOS graduate and is a faculty member in the Industrial Technology area. Dr.
Batts taught continuing education course in Occupational Safety and provided private consulting in the areas of safety and health to eastern North Carolina industries. Dr. Batts has served both locally and nationally for the American Society of Safety Engineers. Dr. Batts has previously taught numerous graduate courses in the MSOS program. He teaches Workers Compensation, Industrial Safety, Fire
Protection Safety and Protection, and Applied Safety management an as-needed basis.
