Course Description

The goal of the Proton Therapy Center National Education Conference is to update managed care medical directors, referring physicians, nurses, case managers, dosimetrists, social workers, medical physicists, pediatric cancer care specialists, and other healthcare professionals on the recent advances, current treatment modalities, and clinical trials in radiation oncology using proton beam therapy for the treatment of cancer. The diagnoses covered during this conference will include prostate cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, pediatric tumors, CNS tumors, lymphoma, head and neck cancers, and gastrointestinal tumors.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

• Interpret the clinical effectiveness of proton therapy and the different targeted therapies and radiotherapeutic approaches to assess which intervention would be most appropriate for patients with different cancer diagnoses and solid tumors (Knowledge, Competence, Performance,

Patient Outcomes);

• Incorporate an appropriate sequence for chemotherapy/surgical/ radiological intervention for solid tumors into patients’ proton therapy treatment plans for improved patient outcomes (Knowledge,

Competence, Performance, Patient Outcomes);

• Utilize information gained during the conference to appropriately refer patients to the Proton Therapy Center (Knowledge, Competence,

Performance, Patient Outcomes); and

• Assess and treat solid tumors and other malignant diagnoses using novel targeted therapies and proton beam therapy for better patient outcomes and reduction of normal tissue damage (Knowledge,

Competence, Performance, Patient Outcomes).

Target Audience

This conference is designed for oncologists, hematologists, managed care medical directors, case managers, referring physicians, pediatric cancer care providers, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals who are interested in learning more about the diagnoses, treatment, and care of proton therapy patients.

Lecture/Didactic; Panel Discussions; Interactive Small Groups/Breakout

Sessions; Patient Interviews; Question-and-Answer Sessions

Evaluation

A course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health status. Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify future educational topics.

Accreditation/Credit Designation

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the

Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 10.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM . Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing

Nursing continuing education contact hours will be provided.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

CME Certificates and Attendance Verification Certificates

Certificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM or certificates documenting attendance will be distributed to participants as they depart the conference. To obtain a CME certificate, physicians must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and a

CME Verification Form .

Upon request, a record of attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.

Registration Information

On-site registration opens at 7:00 am on Friday, September 9, 2011 in the foyer outside Anderson Conference Hall on the 11th Floor of the R. Lee Clark Clinic building.

The opening session of the conference will begin at 8:00 am on Friday, September 9, 2011, and the conference will adjourn at 12:15 pm on Saturday, September 10, 2011.

Advance registration is encouraged as space and materials are limited. Please see the registration form for applicable fees.

The conference registration fee includes tuition, breakfasts, breaks, lunches, and the welcome reception.

The deadline for advance registration is Friday, August 26, 2011.

Refund/Cancellation Policy

The registration fee, minus a $50 administrative handling fee, is refundable if a written request is received on or before August 26, 2011. No refunds will be granted after that date.

The request for a registration refund must include the tax identification number of the company or institution if registration was paid by a company or institution check. Although no refunds will be granted after August 26, 2011, you may transfer your registration to a colleague. For additional information, contact CME/Conference Management at

The Department of CME/Conference Management reserves the right to cancel activities prior to the scheduled date if low enrollment or other circumstances make it necessary.

In case of activity cancellation, the liability of the Department of CME/Conference

Management is limited to the registration fee. CME/Conference Management will refund the full registration fee. The Department of CME/Conference Management reserves the right to limit the number of participants in a program and is not responsible for any expenses incurred by an individual whose registration is not confirmed and for whom space is not available.
