DANISH ROYAL VISIT TO THE USA 2016
WHY THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?
The U.S. economy is not only the world’s largest – it also moves confidently ahead.
Denmark and the United States share the same goal: Creating growth and jobs
in a world where the wealth of our countries increasingly depends on trade and
innovation, and where exports and foreign direct investment play a key role in our
economies and future prosperity.
TRADE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES
The U.S is the largest economy in the world and a constantly growing market for
Danish exporters. Exports to the U.S. represent more than USD 14 billion, which also
are the foundation of investments, growth and job creation. The U.S. is Denmark’s
third largest export market – and the largest trade partner outside the European
Union. In several sectors, Denmark– and Danish companies – have the expertise,
advanced products and solutions that are in high demand in the U.S. This visit is
an excellent opportunity to cultivate important relations, support existing and new
market opportunities as well as valuable networking.

SUSTAINABILITY
HEALTHCARE
Focus on energy and environment is increasing in the U.S.
with goals to reduce CO2 emission and increase energy
efficiency. Sustainable energy is also planned to take over
a larger part of the energy consumption in the public sector.
The Danish healthcare and life sciences sector is the largest
of all exports to the U.S. In 2015, pharmaceuticals accounted
for 25 percent of all Danish exports to the U.S., representing
a value of USD 3.6 billion.
The increased focus on energy and environment is creating
a number of export opportunities for Danish companies.
The Danish competencies within energy and environment are
especially suited to solve the U.S. sustainability challenges.
Danish healthcare and life science companies have exported
products to the U.S. for more than a century, and as demand
have grown for products and services, so have investments.
In 2014, more than 50 Danish companies had offices in
20 states generating 12,000 jobs. At an estimated USD
2.9 trillion, the state of the U.S. healthcare sector is strong
– and growing. From recent announcements to expand
manufacturing operations, to the establishing of new
subsidiaries, Danish healthcare and life science companies
continue to pursue growth and investment in the U.S.
The increased optimization of the U.S. healthcare system
creates market opportunities in the medical device industry,
the sector for welfare technology and healthcare IT.

AGRICULTURE & FOOD
MARITIME
With 315 million consumers the U.S. market for food and
agricultural products is one of the largest in the world and
holds significant opportunities for the Danish agriculture and
food sector. In recent years, market trends matching Danish
strongholds have grown significantly. Thus, consumers’
demands for high quality foods, healthy foods, as well as
sustainability and traceability in the food production have
increased and continue to do so. As a result, labels ensuring
that food products are ‘gluten free ’, ‘natural’, ‘non-GMO’
or ‘non-antibiotic’ have emerged, and the market share
of organic foods has increased by 11.3 percent from 2013
to 2014. One of the main implications of these trends
regards the inputs in the production chain: In order to be in
compliance with the consumers’ demands the animal feed
and the ingredients in the food have to meet certain criteria,
which favors producers who manage to do so.
The U.S. is the second largest market for Danish shipping.
On average, a Danish operated ship enters an American
port more than 3,000 times a year. The American market
will continue to grow as an important export market for
The Blue Denmark as the U.S. population is expected to
grow. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that
America’s population will grow by 70 million by 2045 and the
freight volume will increase by 45 percent. The U.S. is also
important for the Danish maritime technology industry not
least in light of the increased focus on the development
of environmental friendly technology solutions for shipping,
maritime safety and U.S. regulatory requirements in this
context. In order to secure America as an attractive market
for Danish maritime companies it is important to be in
dialogue with the U.S. and the Danish business participating
in the Royal visit will have the change to meet and discuss
American and global regulation with the relevant American
decision makers and administration.
