Even under Fire

Protecting lives for more than 30 years

In 1974, the movie Towering Inferno sparked the imagination of

Richard Licht, a 3M product developer who passionately believed 3M technologies could be used to improve the safety of multi-story buildings.

Several devastating fires – including the 1980 MGM Grand Hotel fire that killed 84 people and injured 679, inspired Licht to develop the first firestop products based on existing 3M intumescent technology.

Recognized by many as “The Father of Fire stopping,” Licht also helped develop some of the first firestop requirements in commercial building codes. He worked tirelessly to make the codes more demanding to improve the safety of buildings.

Progress

and

Trends

As an industry leader, 3M drives technologies that enable lower cost building solutions. For instance, 3M intumescent technology enabled the use of plastic pipes that were originally banned in commercial buildings due to their combustible nature – providing a cheaper, easyto-install solution for electrical conduits and plumbing lines.

3M TM gains reputation for leadership and earns the industry's trust:

Passive Fire

Protection Systems

Passive fire protection functions to contain fires at the source, preventing loss of life by preventing the products of combustion (smoke, hot gases and flames) from spreading throughout a building.

Passive fire protection is a proven method of protecting structures against fire, and of providing protection to services within concealed spaces by reducing/minimizing/delaying the spread of a fully grown fire to different compartments to prevent/reduce loss in terms of life and property. A vital factor in reducing this risk is to provide physical barriers to the spread of fire within the building by dividing it in to a series of compartments.

The protection of the structural flame, the enclosure and protection of vertical and horizontal openings, effective firestopping at junctions, protection of service penetrations, and use of low flame spread finishing materials and non-combustible materials are all economically viable, effective & important considerations.

Having passive protection in place helps assure building occupants that there will be time to exit before gases, fire and smoke spread throughout the building. If active systems fail, as they often do, then there is still a passive system in place for life safety.

It can be achieved by use of an effective Firestopping system. Firestopping is an integral part of fire protection engineering. Firestop systems protect against the passage of flames, deadly gases and toxic smoke through openings that are created for penetrations, joints and gaps in fire. Resistive walls, floors and floor/ceiling assembly.

The integrity of fire-rated assemblies is restored by firestop systems.

3M TM is proud to be the industry leader in firestopping.

Our dedication to stringent testing and code developments help make buildings safer today than they were even

10 years ago. And when that dedication is backed by the 3M TM brand, you get what you would expect – proven reliability and outstanding service.

The construction industry is increasingly moving towards easy-to-use firestop solutions. That’s why 3M TM , in its leadership role, provides cutting-edge and fully integrated systems. These systems are designed to help you efficiently build safer buildings that protect lives and property.

The majority of 3M TM ’s firestopping innovations are tested on-site in the company’s own UL and Intertek certified fire-test center. By testing these systems in actual job-specific conditions, we help you with high-quality, effective firestopping solutions.

Building designs and uses continue to evolve, and so too must 3M TM firestop technology. For example, in buildings where telecommunication cables are constantly being upgraded, the 3M™ Fire Barrier Pass-Through Device allows for re-enter ability and helps keep cables organized and protected.

From time-tested fire barrier sealants to today’s innovative firestop devices and duct wraps,

3M TM scientists work to develop solutions to firestop virtually anything on a building site. With over 100 products and over 1000 tested approved systems, 3M TM has the most complete program for all your firestopping needs.

Fire Protection for IT, ITES and

Telecom Buildings

Fires are a major hazard to human life and cause costly damage to infrastructure. With major information/data, huge investments and above all life at risk, the IT-

ITES and Telecom sector stands at a higher risk than any normal office complex. The losses in terms of life, resources, business downtime are huge. The limited escape facilities and the difficulties encountered by intervention forces in gaining access, call for extensive safety arrangements which must be complementary and mutually coordinated.

3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite Sheet

Product Description

3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite Sheet is a one-part composite system comprised of four components. The heart of the system is an organic/ inorganic, fire-resistive elastomeric sheet.

3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite Sheet is designed to seal larger penetrations through fire-rated walls and floors. The nominal

0.3 inch (7.62 mm) thick composite sheet provides up to a 4-hour fire rating. When exposed to temperatures in excess of 250°F

(121°C), the fire-resistive sheet begins to volumetrically expand and swells 8-10 times its original size, forming a high strength, hard char that retards heat transmission. This expansion process is called “intumescence”.

From 2 hours to 4 hours depending on the system and application for walls and floors penetration.

Product Features and benefits:

• Intumescences (expands with heat) to form a hard char that tightly seals penetrations against flame spread, smoke and toxic fumes.

• Multiple applications: It can be used for through penetration firestop, heat shield and

firebreak protection.

• Easy to install using common trade tools, No mixing or damming required

• Lightweight: It is easy to handle, cut and form to desired shape.

• Easy to fasten: Bolt punch or drill through. Use self-tapping screws or anchor bolts.

• Thermally conductive: Allows unwanted heat build-up to escape.

• UL Classifi ed: Tried and tested. Peace of mind for the customer.

• Cost eff ective: High performance versus installed cost.

• Versatile and Re- enterable: Can be cut to fit irregular shapes.

Installation

Floor Installation (Typical)

1. Cover Sheet: The opening is covered with 3M™ Fire Barrier

CS-195+ Composite Sheet cut to fit snugly around pipes and to overlap the opening by a minimum of 50.8 mm. The sheet’s galvanized steel layer should face outward (exposed).

2. The 3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite is secured with 6.35 mm x

38.1 mm steel masonry fasteners with steel washers spaced

152.4 mm O.C.

3. Seal: 3M™ Fire Barrier CP 25 WB+ Caulk and Moldable Putty+

is used to seal the CS-195+ Composite Sheet.

Wall Installation:

1. The 3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite must be placed on both sides of the wall and overlap the edge of the opening a minimum of

50.8 mm.

2. Wrap the required number of layers of FS-195+ Wrap/Strip around the insulated pipe, foil side out.

3. Cut the 3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite to closely follow the contours of the FS-195+ Wrap/Strip around the insulated pipe. Do not allow an annular space greater than 6.35 mm to remain between the 3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite and the FS-195+ Wrap/Strip.

4. Install the 3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite with the foil side facing into the penetration opening. Apply a 6.35 mm minimum bead of CP 25 WB+ Caulk or Moldable Putty+ around the perimeter of

the opening on the concrete before installing the 3M™ Fire Barrier

CS-195+ Composite. To allow for fastening, there must be a 50.8 mm minimum overlap of the 3M™ Fire Barrier CS-195+ Composite

onto the concrete on all sides of the opening.
