Celebrating Our Galaxy of Stars Highlights of the 2013-14 School + Community Partnerships In the Cedar Rapids Community School District Hosted by the Community Relations Department MEET THE PARTNERS The dedicated involvement of businesses and organizations support educational opportunities in the Cedar Rapids Community School District and help students achieve. We are proud to spotlight partnership activities from 2013-2014. Bank Iowa – Grant Elementary School - Bank Iowa is willing to help the Grant school community in any way and whenever asked. They provide volunteers for America Reads Day and math mentors, and support our Spring Fling. Bank Iowa displays student artwork at their business and helps enrich our student community. Bank of the West – Garfield Elementary School - Bank of The West employees read to students on America Reads Day and during Banking Week. The Bank has provided door prizes for school events and bank managers have met with students to help them learn the value of saving money. Our students create special holiday and thank you cards for our partners throughout the school year. Cedar Rapids Kernels – Taylor Elementary School - Kernels staff members participate in American Reads Day. They also donate door prizes for our annual Healthy Families night. The Kernels co-sponsor a League of Dreams baseball league for second and third graders during the summer, and host a fieldtrip to a noon game for students and the Night at the Ballpark event. Kernels mascot, Mr. Shuck’s, often joins the Taylor community for special events. Cedar Rapids Rotary West – Van Buren Elementary School - Rotary West helps to fund our Book Bonanza, allowing us to increase the number of books provided to students. Rotary volunteers share their time to read with students on a weekly basis, and on America Reads Day. They also help with our Walk-A-Thon, Spring Fling, and popping popcron for our Pride Days. Christ Church Presbyterian – Cleveland Elementary School - Christ Church Presbyterian hosts the "Cleveland Connections Program" which has provided programming for students on early dismissal days. The congregation has also partnered with the Hy-Vee Sprouts program during the summer to provide a gardening experience for interested Cleveland students. Additionally, parishioners support students financially by providing school supplies, Hy-Vee receipts, and helping with outstanding lunch bills. They also partner with HACAP to help support the weekend backpack program. Christ Episcopal Church – Kenwood Elementary School - Christ Episcopal Church started the "Operation Backpack Program" with the HACAP Food Reservoir. Church members provide weekend backpacks of food for students in need. The church also has donated books, school supplies, box tops, soup labels, and Hy-Vee receipts. They also donate funds to provide books for students who cannot afford to purchase them at the school book fair. Collins Community Credit Union – Kenwood Elementary School - Bank volunteers speak with the fourth and fifth graders about financial management skills. Using hands-on activities, they explain what money is, purpose of a budget, starting a savings account, and the importance of managing credit. They visit classrooms multiple times to educate the students on the value of saving. First Assembly Church – Pierce Elementary School - First Assembly volunteers help to prepare the school grounds for the back-to-school flag raising event. They also provide decorated baskets of school supplies for teachers. Church members support the needs of at-risk families by helping with the after-school kids' club program. They also supply clothing, furniture, and holiday gifts for families in need, and serve as volunteers at our school carnival. First Congregational Church – Johnson Elementary School of the Arts - First Congregational Church partners on our Fall Festival and Blues & BBQ family events by providing meals for our families, staff, and community members. They also host our Field Day and fifth grade celebration, and provided meals and snacks for staff. The church shares produce from the Community Garden with our school and provides volunteers to paint our gallery and do yardwork. Johnson School has provided parking for their worship times and special events. GE Capital – Van Buren Elementary School – GE Capital volunteers help with the annual 5th grade Speak Up! program, helping students to develop public speaking skills. They also provide school supply backpacks, treats for events, and financial support for the Van Buren Business Partnership Committee. They help with the weekend Backpack Program and assist with school landscaping projects. GE also donates soup labels, box tops, and empty ink jet cartridges. Van Buren reciprocates with holiday caroling, crafts, and student artwork. Hy-Vee First Avenue – Johnson Elementary School of the Arts - Hy-Vee prepares and delivers fresh fruits and vegetables for daily snacks and caters school events. The wide variety of fruits and vegetables that Hy-Vee prepares opens students minds and tastebuds to the delicious varieties of healthy foods and this encourages them to make healthy choices. Our partnership helps support Hy-Vee as a vital member of our community. Hy-Vee Johnson Avenue – Jackson Elementary School - Hy-Vee volunteers participated in America Reads Day. They also presented a healthy eating assembly, "Taste the Rainbow," and opened students eyes on the variety of fruits and vegetables and the different parts of the body that fruits and vegetables fuel. Our students particpated in Veteran's Day activities at Hy-Vee. Hy-Vee Mount Vernon Road – Grant Wood Elementary School - Hy-Vee provides root beer and ice-cream for our "Reading Counts" event, recognizing students for reaching their individual reading goals, Hy-Vee also provided water for volunteers on America Reads Day and donated orange juice and bananas for the Title 1 "Books, Bagels, and Bananas" family literacy celebration. Hy-Vee also provides plastic bags for packing food for the weekend backpack program. In turn, students make cards to present to Veterans during the Hy-Vee Veteran’s Day Breakfast. Students have also created special Valentine’s Day thank you cards for our partner. Hy-Vee Oakland Road – Garfield Elementary School - Hy-Vee provides holiday gifts for students in need. Hy-Vee also provides fruit for school community events during the Iowa Assessments. Volunteers from Hy-Vee participate in America Reads and visit as guest speakers throughout the school year. Hy-Vee also received a grant to support our school community garden. They provided soil, plants, seeds and a garden tiller. The store dietician shared gardening tips and presented lessons on preparing vegetables and fruits. The grant also provided a monthly fruit or vegetable snack for our students throughout the school year. Garfield students create special holiday and thank you cards for our partners. ImOn – Grant Elementary School - ImOn volunteers read on America Reads Day and also read with students one-on-one throughout the school year. They support our learning goals and build positive relationships with students. Intermec/Honeywell – Taylor Elementary School – Intermec/Honeywell hosts an annual school supply drive each fall. They have also generously provided grants for instructional materials, including iPads and cameras for classroom use. Intermec/Honeywell employees also serve as mentors through the Lunch and Math Buddies programs. Volunteers also participate in America Reads Day. Kenwood Park United Methodist Church – Kenwood Elementary School - Students enjoy tutoring support from and friendships with the partner volunteers. Church members donate box tops, soup labels, Hy-Vee receipts, and pop tabs. They contribute clothing for students in need and provide Thanksgiving meals for families. The women's group also makes school supply bags for preschool students. Little Caesars Pizza Mt. Vernon Road – Grant Wood Elementary School - Our first graders receive "Little Caesar FREE crazy bread certificates" for reading 100 books for their Wise Owl program. Little Caesars also provides crossword puzzles, bookmarks, and certificates for the Title 1 "Books, Bagels, and Bananas" family event. All students and staff are motivated and have fun when "CAESARMAN" the mascot shows up on Field Day and at other special events. Grant Wood students created St. Patrick’s Day cards and special Valentine’s Day thank you notes for Little Caesars and hung them in their store. Lovely Lane Church – Pierce Elementary School - Lovely Lane volunteers help to meet the needs of at-risk families, donating funds, and filling and packing backpacks for the weekly Operation Backpack Program. This provided food for the weekend to families in need. They have also led a weekly after-school club at the nearby Cedar Wood apartments. Maranatha Bible Church – Taylor Elementary School - Maranatha Bible Church sponsors a school supply drive and church volunteers help with school community events. They also participate in the Book Buddy program and serve on the Taylor CAN (Community Action Network) team. Matthew 25 Ministry Hub – Taylor Elementary School - First graders are supported by weekly book buddy visits from Matthew 25 volunteers. Matthew 25 also supports the music mentoring program, hosting Cornell College students to mentor and teach Taylor students to play musical instruments. Matthew 25 funds instrument rental for participating students and volunteers treat students to musical field trips throughout the year. Matthew 25 also sponsors a school Gardening Club. Mercy Medical Center – McKinley Middle School - Mercy contributes to the annual McKinley Bear Walk promoting healthy choices. During the event students, teachers, parents, and the community come together to walk the McKinley track and raise money to help renovate McKinley's outdoor facilities. Mount Mercy University – Arthur and Erskine Elementary Schools - Mount Mercy University partners with Arthur and Erskine to provide students with career opportunities, college visits, science nights, and wellness activites. Arthur and Erskine welcome work study and field experience students into our buildings for positive learning experiences in authentic classroom settings. Quaker Oats – Roosevelt Middle School - During Iowa Assessment testing week, Quaker Oats provides snacks and continues supplying our school with granola bars throughout the year for other programs. Quaker Oats and their employees donate money to support our PARRT program which celebrates the academic and behavioral success of students. Each trimester, Quaker sponsors our PARRT Awards with student awards. Roosevelt gives back by having students help out with company events and celebrations. Ralston Foods – Garfield Elementary School - Ralston Foods collected and donated school supplies and holiday gifts for students in need. Garfield students create special holiday and thank you cards for our partners and invite Ralston employees to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal at school. Ridgeview and Meadowview Assisted Living Community – Coolidge Elementary School Students benefit from the interactions with the residents by being calm, patient and understanding when working on various projects and activities. They also learn about events throughout history and how life is different now from the past during their conversations. The residents are able to take field trips to Coolidge to attend music programs and other activities and relive some of their childhood memories. Coolidge students take monthly trips to Ridgeview & Meadowview to work with the residents in activites such as: spelling bees, cookie decorating and various crafts. US Bank – Harding Middle School - Harding students have provided entertainment for bank employees and patrons during the holidays. US Bank has supported our students through a very generous gift in the form of a scholarship given to an 8th grader annually. Veridian – Madison Elementary School -Veridian volunteers assist Madison students in reading, math, social skills, writing skills, communication skills, and building self-esteem. They participate in Math Buddies, Reading Buddies, Lunch Buddies, Pen Pals, Madison Walk-a-thon, Holiday Gift Baskets, Holiday cards featuring the students' artwork, and more! Western Fraternal Life – Grant Elementary School - Western Franternal Life volunteers participate in America Reads Day. They also provide tutoring for students in math and reading. The partner supports our learning goals and builds positive relationships with students. Wilson Middle School - Western Fraternal Life provides financial assistance for student enrichment. Their donations allowed us to bring in an anti-bullying play to present to the entire student body, in addition to education materials and study guides to be used in SEB lessons for our students. MEET THE SPECIAL SERVICE HONOREES Spotlighting special contributions made by businesses and organizations not registered as formal partnerships during 2013-2014. Abbe Center for Community Mental Health – Metro Care Connection - The Abbe Center for Community Mental Health provides school-based mental health services to students. Abbe Center therapists can provide assessments, consultations/education, crisis intervention, educational groups, anger management and therapy to students. These services are provided at the student’s school in a confidential manner with parental involvement. Students and families are able to access these mental health services with every effort put forth to accommodate a family’s ability to pay. AmeriCorps – Grant Wood Elementary School - Grant Wood students at all grade levels benefited from the efforts of two full-time AmeriCorps members. Students were assisted with reading,writing, and math skills. McKinley Middle School - AmeriCorps members served as mentors, leaders, and role models to help students with math skills and support teachers. They also assisted with STEM Academy, a summer program for students to further enhance their understanding of science and alternative energy through field trips and interactive activities. Area Ambulance – Cedar Rapids Community School District - Area Ambulance staff have volunteered their time and talent to meet the Healthy Kids Act state mandate that graduating seniors complete a course leading to certification in CPR. Area ambulance staff developed a curriculum and provided experienced CPR instructors who come to the high schools to teach CPR to CRCSD students at no cost. Area Substance Abuse Council – Metro Care Connection - In partnership with the Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC), Metro Care Connection offers substance abuse assessments, treatment services, family support and prevention programs to students and their families. Substance abuse counselors are assigned to each high school and are on call to the middle schools as needed. All of ASAC treatment services are confidential and provided without regard to ability to pay. Barnes and Noble Booksellers – Metro High School - Barnes and Noble supports the fall and spring book fairs, benefitting the school library. Additionally, they have donated books and other items as door prizes for school events. The store has also helped to bring award-winning authors to the school. Big Brothers/Big Sisters – Hiawatha Elementary School - Students are matched with a reliable, supportive community adult member through the Lunch Buddy Program. Every other week they commit their time, energy and effort to connect with students who are in need of a supportive adult mentor. Kenwood Elementary School - Kenwood has many Lunch Buddy volunteers. Students are carefully matched with a volunteer with similar hobbies and interests. They enjoy eating lunch together, playing a board game, going outside for recess, or just talking together. In some cases, the students have a wonderful and enlighting friendship year after year with the same lunch buddy. Taylor Elementary School - Big Brothers/Big Sisters builds strong, lasting relationships with our students. Students look forward to eating lunch with their Big Brother or Big Sister who they bond with and look up to. The “littles” ask all the time when their “Big” is coming. Van Buren Elementary School - Big Brothers Big Sisters provides students with an adult mentor and friend. Most adults come to school to eat lunch with students and spend time with them at recess. We also have quite a few that see students outside school hours. Brenneman and Associates – Kennedy High School - Brenneman and Associates supports the electric car program with a generous financial gift. This allows the program to build electric cars, travel to competitions and host a spring event. CarePro at the Pavilion Pharmacy – Metro Care Connection - Since the inception of our school based clinics and services, this pharmacy has collaborated to provide low cost prescription and medications for our clinics and to be available for ongoing consultation regarding medication matters to our health care staff. These medications are then available to be prescribed by the nurse practitioners after a diagnosed illness, decreasing the student’s time away from class and the learning process. Cargill – Johnson Elementary School of the Arts - Cargill employees organize, pack, and deliver food bags for our Backpack Program. Their valuable contributions provide students-inneed with nutritious food over the weekend. Cedar Rapids Family Church – Truman Elementary School – The church housed our summer programming during construction at Truman and found ways to collaborate with the staff to provide supports to the school including providing school supplies, helping with landscaping, volunteering for events and activities, and providing financial assistance to families in need. Cedar Rapids/Marion Optimists – Metro High School - The Cedar Rapids–Marion Optimists were a fantastic support to Metro High School’s effort to raise funds for a spring break service trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. With financial support from the Optimists, Metro was able to cover expenses and offer participating students a valuable opportunity to give back to those in need. The Optimists also donate monies each year for the Student Achievement fund. Coe College – McKinley Middle School - Coe College students volunteer to provide one-on-one assistance in the classroom. They helped students with algebra, reading, learning lab (an after school program) and band. Taylor Elementary School - Coe College students visit Taylor to help at recess time once or twice a week during the school year. They enjoy kickball and soccer during outside recess. At indoor recess they enjoy playing board games. Crown Trophy – Garfield Elementary School - Crown has reworked donated trophies at his shop for us to sell at our Santa's Secret Shop in December. Students are able to purchase these gift items for family members as special one-of-a-kind treasures. Eastern Iowa Arts Academy – Kenwood Elementary School – The after-school program provides a variety of activities for participating students, including a creative dance class on early-dismissal days. First Lutheran Church – Hoover Elementary School – Operation Backpack provides a bag of food items for some 120 students. In partnership with HACAP, volunteers from First Lutheran assemble and deliver the food bags each week. Foster Grandparents – Arthur Elementary School - Our foster grandparent helps students to complete classroom work and succeed with expectations of completion of work. Our foster grandparent also reads with students, helping them to build their fluency level. This one-on-one assistance also offers students a friendly adult mentor. Kenwood Elementary School - Our wonderful foster "grandmas" positively mentor students one-on-one or in group settings. Nixon Elementary School - Foster Grandparents work one-on-one and in small groups with students. All students who worked with a Foster Grandparent last year improved their reading participation. General Mills – McKinley Middle School - General Mills was a major contributor to the McKinley Bear Walk promoting healthy choices. In addition, the walk raised money to help renovate McKinley's outdoor facilities. Gloria Dei Church – Truman Elementary School – Church members volunteer each month to support the Operation Backpack Program. They pick up food and pack the backpacks each week. Truman students and families rely on this supplemental food on the weekends. Gloria Dei has also supported students and families with other needs and provided holiday assistance. Guaranty Bank and Trust – McKinley Middle School - Guaranty Bank helped pay for the AntiBullying staff t-shirts. These t-shirts are worn on early out days to promote the anti-bullying campaign. Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) – Hoover Elementary School HACAP provides food items for the Operation Backpack program, providing some 120 students in need with weekend food supplies. Taylor Elementary School - HACAP donates food for students to take home on the weekends. This not only provides food for those in need but increases attendance rates on Friday’s when participating students pick up their weekend food packages. Heritage Care Center – Hoover Elementary School - Student Council members plan and participate in activities for and with care center residents. The students sing songs and do activities with the seniors on their visits. Last year our students also planted flowers at the Heritage Care Center. The program builds leadership abilities and helps students develop social skills. Hus Presbyterian Church – Wilson Middle School - Whether it is delivering school supplies at the beginning of the year to extending a hand in partnering with school initiatives, Hus Presbyterian is a helpful neighboring church community who supports the Wilson school community. Hy-Vee First Avenue – McKinley Middle School - Hy-Vee donated snacks for Iowa Assessments and the Bear Walk promoting healthy choices and raising funds for outdoor facilities. Hy-Vee also helped fund anti-bullying staff t-shirts, which are worn on early-dismissal days to promote the anti-buylling campaign. Hy-Vee Oakland Road – Kenwood Elementary School - Hy-Vee donates food, utencils, and napkins for our spring carnival. They have also donated pumpkins for our Harvest Hop and cookies for America Reads volunteers. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) – Hoover Elementary School IBEW has donated funds to help provide Thanksgiving food baskets for families in needs and to purchase winter clothing for our students in need of additional support. ImOn Communications – Kenwood Elementary School – ImOn volunteers assist students with reading skills one-on-one and in small groups. Intermec/Honeywell – Kennedy High School – Intermec/Honeywell supports the electric car program with a generous finanancial gift aimed at specific projects. The current gift allows students to study the pros and cons of litium alloy batteries as a power source. Intermec/Honeywell Foundation – Coolidge Elementary School – Intermec/Honeywell has provided much technology to Coolidge thanks to a generous technology grant. We used the funds to purchase iPads for classroom use. Students will benefit for many years because of the technologies that have been provided. International Paper – Hoover Elementary School - International Paper provided funds to purchase 10 iPads and connectors used to link them to our interactive whiteboards (Promethean boards). This technology benefits all of our students during whole group and small group instruction by increasing student engagement. Kenwood Neighborhood Association – Kenwood Elementary School - The Kenwood Neighborhood Association donated a tool chest for our first school garden. Members have provided gardening resources and tips about vegetables and edible flowers. Kids on Course –Harrison Elementary School - Whatever it takes! Kids on Course staff and board exemplify this when it comes to supporting students and family success and well-being at Harrison. KOC is involved in the daily lives of students through enrichment programs, tutoring, academic learning groups, family events, and home visits (and more). They add a positive tone and direction to our school culture. Van Buren Elementary School – Kids on Course provides a plethora of opportunities for students. They are able to experience dance, show choir, chess, ceramics, various athletics and violin, just to name a few. Students are also able to take part in the free, after school tutoring through this program. Lil’ Drug – McKinley Middle School - Lil' Drug was a major contributor to the annual McKinley Bear Walk promoting healthy choices. The event also raised funds to help renovate McKinley's outdoor facilities. Lowe’s Home Improvement – Taylor Elementary School – A grant from Lowe’s funded updated exterior lighting at the school. This supports energy efficiency and security. Metro North Rotary – Metro High School - Metro North Rotary members have helped to renovate the exterior of the campus in a beautification project. They also assist students with job preparation skills, participate in Day of Caring service projects, and provide holiday food baskets and gifts to families in need. They support the Prep-to-Grad Class and Business and Meal Etiquette Class and host the annual Teacher Appreciation Breakfast. Metro students and staff also regularly attend Rotary meetings. Mindfire Communications – Kennedy High School - Mindfire Communications supports the electric car program with a generous financial gift. This allows the program to build electric cars, travel to competitions and host a spring event. New Covenant Church – Hiawatha Elementary School – New Covenant members volunteer their time as Lunch Buddies. Church volunteers also assist with the Operation Backpack Program and provide financial support to families in need. They help to re-supply classrooms with specific teacher requests during the winter break, provide meals for staff during in-service meetings, and organize/host a school carnival. The church also sponsors a summer enrichment program. Palo Savings Bank – Kennedy High School - Palo Savings Bank supports the electric car program with a generous financial gift. This allows the program to build electric cars, travel to competitions and host a spring event. Pepsico – McKinley Middle School - Pepsico's generous donation of granola bars were handed out to students throughout the year for breakfast, after-school learning lab, Iowa Assessments, and the annual wellness Bear Walk. Pro Tow LLC – Kennedy High School - Pro Tow LLC supports the electric car program with a generous financial gift. This allows the program to build electric cars, travel to competitions and host a spring event. Quaker Oats – Hoover Elementary School - Quaker Oats supports students by providing 10 cases of granola bars twice a year. These are provided to students who don’t get breakfast at home yet arrive at school too late to eat breakfast in our cafeteria. Kenwood Elementary School - Quaker Oats provides healthy, nutritional snacks during assessment testing days. They also donate snacks for our after-school activities and events. Rockwell Collins – Hiawatha Elementary School - First and second grade students participate in a Penpal program with Rockwell employees, helping students to develop writing skills and to interact positively on a personal level. Rockwell volunteers also provide hands-on science learning activities for students and mentoring assistance. Kennedy High School Rockwell Collins supports the electric car program with a generous financial gift that allows the program to build electric cars, travel over three states to compete with nearly 100 other schools, and to host on an event each spring. Pierce Elementary School - Rockwell Collins engineers, working and retired, support Pierce students by bringing science activities to students and providing excellent role models. Taft Middle School - Rockwell volunteers help with the Future Scientists and Engineers of America, Lego League and Future Cities programs. They also serve as mentors for Mathcounts and judges for speech contests. The Rockwell Roadshow is always a student favorite as it teaches science basics in an entertaining way. Wilson Middle School Rockwell Collins supports the Future Lego League program by providing mentors who attend practices, competitions, and work with students in both Lego League and a recreational robotics club. Wright Elementary School - Rockwell employees serve as pen pals with fourth and fifth grade students. During the school year, students enjoy lunch with their pals at Rockwell and at the school. Russ Fagle Art Studio – Garfield Elementary School - Students were provided space for an open house and art exhibit. Families and community members were able to attend and admire the showcase of student art work. The business also designed a commemorative poster for us to sell as a fundraiser. Russ has provided art work for our posters for Santa's Secret Shop at Christmastime, too. Soilmates / New Pioneer Co-op – Kenwood Elementary School - Kenwood received a grant to start our educational garden from New Pioneer Food Co-op. New Pi has donated seed money to give our gardens a good start. St. Lukes Dental Health Center/HACAP – Metro Care Connection - The St. Luke’s Dental Health Center has collaborated with HACAP staff to provide school-based dental screenings and sealants to our students this past year. Countless CRCSD students have been referred for and received much needed dental treatment and preventative services identified through these screenings and the sealant program. Sunline, Inc. – Kennedy High School – Sunline, Inc. supports the electric car program with a generous financial gift. This allows the program to build electric cars, travel to competitions and host a spring event. West Ridge Care Center – Truman Elementary School - Truman second graders visit West Ridge once a month to read to the residents and share what they are learning. This is a win-win as some of the residences get few visitors they look forward to our students coming. West Ridge residents and staff support Truman PTO events, participate in America Reads, and by attending special programs to support our students. The Al Smith School + Community Partnership Award The District Partnership Award is named in honor and appreciation of Al Smith. A passionate advocate for students, Al worked tirelessly to promote public education and exemplify the District’s vision of “Excellence for All” as a member of the Board of Education (1995-2002). He then spent another decade promoting education and supporting student needs by connecting area businesses and professional organizations with schools as our “District Ambassador” of the School + Community Partnership Program. Al helped to facilitate numerous collaborations that continue to enrich the learning environment for students and staff. He truly embodied the spirit of volunteerism. Al Smith passed away July 5, 2012, at the age of 80. The School + Community Partnership Recognition is coordinated and hosted by the Community Relations Department of the Cedar Rapids Community School District.
