Criteria for Massachusetts Risk Management Credit for Morbidity &Mortality Conferences and Other Regularly Scheduled Series “Risk Management Study” must include instruction in medical malpractice prevention, such as risk identification, patient safety and loss prevention, and may include instruction in any of the following areas: medical ethics, quality assurance, medical-legal issues, patient relations, utilization review that directly relates to quality assurance, and non-economic aspects of practice management. Risk management includes study of the Board of Registration in Medicine’s Patient Care Assessment Regulations (243 CMR 3.01 et seq.), but does not include study of its other regulations or its procedures or operations. Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine Continuing Medical Education Requirement for Physician License Renewal To qualify for Risk Management credit for Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) or other Regularly Scheduled Series (RSS), such as grand rounds, the Course Director shall ensure that all Risk Management sessions: • • • • Cover one or more Risk Management topics (See page 2) Are pre-planned—presented cases must illustrate pre-planned topics. State learner objectives for the session. (See Verb Worksheet and Writing Learner Objectives) Are evaluated on an individual basis to: 1) Determine if the educational objectives were met; 2) Evaluate the quality of instruction; 3) Evaluate the relevance of the program to medical practice. • • • Include a moderator. Present relevant research. Include no more than three separate topics per hour. Completed evaluation forms will provide this information. Use the standard Attendee Evaluation. In order for your session or series to receive Risk Management credits, the following must be executed: 1. Learner objectives must be session-specific. Please list these on the Monitor Verification Form. 2. All Risk Management sessions must be evaluated either after each session or on a quarterly basis. Please make note of this on the Monitor Verification Form. RSS’s must meet the above criteria and be supported by appropriate documentation to receive risk management credit. Typical RSS’s will not qualify for risk management credit if their subject matter consists of individual, unrelated cases.
