3.13.01 Position Summary:
The Fleet Maintenance Manager oversees and maintains an effective fleet
maintenance program that prolongs the life of fire department apparatus, ensures
safe operation of all equipment and completes repairs in a timely manner.
This position involves extensive knowledge of all fire department apparatus and
equipment maintenance needs. The ability to recognize when repairs should be
performed by an authorized or qualified service center is equally important.
3.13.02 Characteristic Work of the Position:
A. Definition: This work is performed at a professional level in the field of
automotive, diesel and small equipment repairs and preventive maintenance.
B. Nature: Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, perform such duties
and activities as may be required to keep apparatus and other equipment within
warranty requirements, to maintain efficient operating conditions and repair
items on an "as needed" basis. The position requires extensive self-directed
planning; organizing and supervision of firefighter assistants to complete
regularly scheduled preventive maintenance periods.
3.13.03 Fundamental Duties and Ancillary Responsibilities:
Fundamental Job Duties:
A. Plans regularly scheduled workdays for preventive maintenance tasks utilizing
firefighters to complete work details.
B. Will utilize sound judgment on when vehicle repairs should be completed by an
outside agency that is authorized or qualified to perform such work.
C. Makes recommendations to the Fire Chief regarding the disposition of various
fire apparatus and equipment.
D. Assists the Fire Chief in developing a budget regarding apparatus maintenance
and equipment repair.
E. Ensures that all fire pumps and aerial devices are service tested by an
authorized evaluator on an annual basis.
F. Supervise and review weekly apparatus inspections conducted by the
firefighters and ensure that vehicle and station inventories are complete and
accurate.

Ancillary Job Responsibilities:
A. Develop and maintain thorough written or computerized records detailing work
performed on all apparatus and equipment.
B. Maintains an adequate inventory of repair parts, oil, anti-freeze, grease and
other items needed on a regular basis to service vehicles and equipment.
C. Follow Town policy and procedures regarding the purchase of items needed for
the maintenance program.
3.13.04 Qualifications:
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other
members of the Department, community officials and the general public.
2. Ability to supervise and coordinate firefighter personnel to aid and assist in
assigned maintenance work.
3. Ability to plan and organize work details and schedule regular preventive
maintenance assignments.
4. Knowledge and familiarity with various outside repair agencies capable of
servicing heavy-duty fire apparatus equipment.
5. Capability to handle or assign emergency repairs as needed.
6. Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, fire apparatus, fire
pumps, power and small equipment.
7. Ability to develop and maintain accurate written or computerized records.
8. Oral and written communication skills necessary for accurate documentation of
various required reports; communicating with the Department, the community
officials, and the general public.
9. Knowledge and appropriate application of Department Standard Operating
Guidelines.

A. Special Requirements:
1. Successful completion of employment trial and training requirements, based
on required percentage responses (50% drills, 30% alarms), training hours,
other department activity hours, and a written recommendation from assigned
supervision.
2. Possession of a valid Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Operators License.
3. Maintain active fire department status as outlined in Employee Requirement
Section 1.09.
4. Firefighters hired after Jan. 1, 1997 must maintain valid CPR card.
5. Firefighters hired after Jan. 1, 2007 must maintain valid First Responder
Certification.
6. Certified or authorized driver/operator engine/pumper and aerial.
B. Minimum Training and Experience:
1. The position of Fleet Maintenance Manger may be assigned to any member of
the Fire Department that meets the qualifications. The manager is encouraged
to attend local and regional training available that applies to fire apparatus,
power and small tool maintenance and repair.
2. Minimum of two years fire service experience or equivalent experience
maintaining and repairing various types of fire apparatus, power and small
equipment.
C. Annual Training Requirements:
50 hours of training annually (calendar year) including attending a minimum of
50% of the department training drills along with approved training outside of the
regular department training program.
D. Non-Discrimination:
