An employee in this class, with general supervision, performs scheduled preventive maintenance, installations, and minor repairs to electronic and electrical-mechanical systems and equipment. Performance is evaluated on an on-going basis. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, climb, and use arm and hand movements Ability to carry tools and lift equipment of 80 to 100 pounds Ability to work at heights on aerial lifts, scaffolding, stepladders and/or extension ladders Ability to crawl in, under, over, or through equipment Ability to work in confined spaces Ability to respond to 24-hour emergency calls after regular working hours, weekends, and holidays. EXAMPLES OF WORK Cleans, inspects and tests fire alarm systems (in accordance with NFPA standards), security systems, phones, public address systems and scoreboards on a scheduled basis Maintains records and charts of work Replaces devices, lamps and wiring, as needed, to correct any discrepancies noted during testing and inspection Notifies supervisor when major repairs are needed Assists electronic technician in repairs Installs electronic equipment and cables in accordance with NEC standards and all other associated codes Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to read drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams, schematics, manuals, and other specifications Use of measuring and test equipment such as volt-, ohm-, impedance, and sound meters (digital and analog) Ability to maintain records of work assignments and materials used Ability to establish and maintain strong human relation skills, effective communication, excellent customer skills and good working relationships with fellow workers, school personnel and administrators REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES – continued Knowledge of principles of safety and first aid as they relate to the trade Skill in the use and care of tools used in the trade Knowledge of resistor, diode, capacitor theory, and parallel series circuits Performs other duties as assigned. EMPLOYEE SAFETY The employee is responsible for using safety devices and protective equipment in order to minimize the frequency and severity of work-related accidents. The employee is also responsible for using safe practices and methods in the operation of equipment and supplies related to his particular job. The employee is further responsible for correcting and/or reporting any conditions within the building or grounds that may be hazardous to employees, students or staff members assigned to the building. The employee is responsible for the safety and maintenance condition of his assigned vehicle. MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent, including formal training in basic electronics and electrical theory courses, plus one year paid experience in testing, maintaining, and repairing industrial electronic/electrical systems. REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES Valid driver’s license and good driving record. PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL The person selected for this position must meet all requirements of the physical examination administered by a medical service selected by the Howard County Public School System. OTHER DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Thorough knowledge of alarm controls, devices, relays, speakers, drivers, KSU, PBX, phones, speakers and associated programs, sound consoles, microphone systems, operation theory and terminology. Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 72, computer PC usage, DOS, Rauland TC26, TCV, TCIV, 2490, T2524, Ademco Vista, Radioics 5200, RAM II, Edwards IRC3, EST2, ESA2000, Simplex 4020, EST LS54, Pyrotronics MXL Millennium software programs.
