JOB DESCRIPTION
VEHICLE MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To direct, plan, oversee, and supervise in the maintenance, inspection, and repair of large gasoline and dieselpowered school buses and other District vehicles and equipment; and to assist the Transportation Director in the
planning, implementation, and administration of a preventive maintenance program for district vehicles.
Employees in this classification receive limited supervision from the Transportation Director within a broad
framework of policies and procedures. Employees in this classification direct and oversee the work of others in
a supervisory capacity. This job class provides assistance in the planning and implementation of mechanical
shop activities, operations and programs and provides technical direction to shop personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS














under direction, plan and supervise the mechanical preventive maintenance program for diesel and
gas powered school buses, light and heavy duty trucks, passenger cars, and a variety of other
motorized equipment
supervise, schedule, assign, and review the work of the mechanical shop personnel
inspect a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment for proper and appropriate maintenance,
to ensure against potential safety hazards
determine maintenance and repair priorities and estimate the cost of major maintenance and repair
work
plan, organize, and maintain an inventory of the mechanical shop parts, supplies, materials, and
equipment
ability to deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions, and ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships with others
possession of a valid Class B drivers license, possess or have ability to obtain within 6 months from
date of hire a brake "Installer/Adjuster License" issued by the Bureau of Automotive Repair,
Department of Consumer Affairs
arranges for body and fender and mechanical repairs with outside garages, as directed
reviews and prepares a variety of reports and correspondence pertaining to shop operations
performs related duties as required
evaluate the work performance of mechanical shop personnel
maintain a variety of records, including operational, personnel and service time records
plan and conduct in-service training programs and job safety programs for mechanical shop
personnel

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
POSSESSION OF:
 a valid Class B California drivers' license
KNOWLEDGE OF:
 the principles of internal combustion engines, drive trains, and electrical systems
 procedures, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of gasoline
and diesel powered vehicles and equipment
 provisions of the California Vehicle Code and Administrative Code applicable to the operation of
vehicles used in the transportation of students
 California Administrative Code Title 13 as it relates to school buses and heavy equipment.
 safety regulations and precautions pertaining to buses, vehicle, and equipment servicing
 current preventative maintenance methods, practices, and procedures
SKILL TO:







train, schedule, direct, and oversee the work of others
effectively use standard and specialized shop tools and equipment
inspect, diagnose, and repair a wide variety of mechanical malfunctions in buses, vehicles, and other
mechanical equipment
understand and follow complex oral and written instructions in an independent manner
plan, organize, and implement preventive maintenance procedures and records
maintain general maintenance and service records and files
establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of
required duties

EDUCATION
Completion of the 12th grade or the equivalent there of.
EXPERIENCE
Five years experiences as a journeyman mechanic in heavy duty and light duty, gas and diesel powered
equipment. Two years of mechanical supervisory experience or fleet management.
