T HIS EXAS TOR Y 67 Year in Review: 2007-08 Texas Places second at 2008 NCAA Championship Behind a national title from sophomore Dave Walters in the 200 freestyle and second-place finishes from the 800 freestyle relay and individually from Ricky Berens and Michael Klueh, Texas placed second at the 2008 NCAA Championships with 406 points, marking the seventh secondplace finish to go nine NCAA titles for head coach Eddie Reese, who completed his 30th season in Austin. Reese secured his 23rd top-three finish at the NCAA Championships. 800 FREESTYLE RELAY SHATTERS NCAA, AMERICAN, U.S. OPEN RECORDS After falling just a few seconds shy of setting a new American record in the 800 freestyle relay at the 2007 Big 12 Championship, Texas managed to shatter that record — and set new NCAA and U.S. Open records - at the 2008 Big 12 Championship in Austin. The quartet of freshman Dave Walters, senior Matt McGinnis, junior Michael Klueh and sophomore Ricky Berens obliterated the record in 6:10.55, breaking the previous mark of 6:14.14 set by Club Wolverine’s Michael Phelps, Peter Vanderkaay, Davis Tarwater and Chris DeJong Michael Klueh, Ricky Berens, Matt McGinnis and Dave Walters set NCAA, American, U.S. Open, Big 12, Big 12 meet, school and pool records in the 800 freestyle relay at the Big 12 Championships. on Nov. 30, 2007 in Atlanta. Walters led off in 1:32.51 to set a new school record in the 200 freestyle, as he took down Doug Gjertsen’s 18-yearold Texas standard of 1:33.15. McGinnis followed in 1:33.31 before giving way to Klueh, who clocked 1:32.21 in the third leg. Berens anchored in 1:32.52 to finish off the relay in 6:10.55. walters captures 200 freestyle at ncaa championships Longhorns History Texas sophomore Dave Walters captured the 200 freestyle on March 28 at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships to become UT’s fourth NCAA 200 freestyle champion and its first since Josh Davis in 1993. Walters’ teammate, senior Matt McGinnis, led the 200 freestyle after the first 175 yards and was under American-record pace after the initial 100 yards. But, Walters, the 2007 U.S. National Champion in the 100-meter freestyle, took over in the final 25 yards to win in 1:32.56, edging Arizona’s Darian Townsend. McGinnis placed third in 1:32.93, and Michael Klueh took seventh in 1:34.22. TEXAS CAPTURES 29TH CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE TITLE Michael Klueh set a school record in the 1,650 free and re-wrote his school mark in the 500 free. 2008-09 Texas Swimming & Diving 68 The more things change, the more they stay the same. Two things have remained constant over the last 30 seasons — coach Eddie Reese has maintained a high standard of excellence, and his Longhorns have continued to win conference titles, year after year. The Longhorns claimed their 29th consecutive conference title and their 12th Big 12 Conference title, as UT completed a four-day run through the Big 12 meet in Austin with a meet record of 1,129 points. The meet marked the first time in the 12-year history of the Big 12 Championship that Texas had won each swimming and diving title at the meet. Junior Michael Klueh was selected as the Swimmer of the Meet, and Reese once again took top honors as the Swimming Coach of the Meet. Diving coach Matt Scoggin was tabbed the Diving Coach of the Meet. Freshman Jonathan Jackson enjoyed breakthrough performances in the 50- and 100 freestyles and was selected as the Newcomer of the Meet. ONE SWIM, FOUR RECORDS FOR KLUEH It took only one swim for junior Michael Klueh to break four records at the Big 12 Championship. Klueh opened the meet with a time of 4 minutes, 11.41 seconds in the 500 freestyle, shattering his own school-record and Big 12 Conference mark of 4:14.10 set at the 2006 NCAA Championship. The mark topped the previous Texas Swimming Center record time of 4:12.18 set by USC’s Ous Year in Review: 2007-08 Mellouli and beat his previous Big 12 meet record of 4:15.28 set at the 2006 Big 12 Championship. 2007-08 results October 19 Fri. KLUEH GOES THE DISTANCE The incredible showing from Klueh at the Big 12 Championship was hardly his first dominant performance of the season. Klueh displayed a sign of things to come on Dec. 1 at the Texas Invitational when he took down Matt Hooper’s 14-year-old school mark in the 1,650 freestyle. Klueh clocked 14:41.83 in the event, breaking Hooper’s previous mark of 14:42.02 set at the 1994 NCAA Championship. Klueh had a hand in all three school records — 1,650 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 800 free relay - that fell during the 2007-08 season. November 2 Fri. 3 Sat. December Sophomore Ricky Berens took second in the 200 IM at the NCAA Championships. SOPHOMORE JINX? NOT A CHANCE! Sophomores Dave Walters and Ricky Berens followed stellar freshman seasons with terrific sophomore campaigns. Walters set a new school record in the 200 freestyle with his performance of 1:32.51 on the opening leg of UT’s American record-setting 800 freestyle relay at the Big 12 Championships. The versatile Berens climbed up UT’s all-time top performance list in the 100- and 200 butterfly events and the 200 IM. Berens now ranks second all-time among UT’s top swimmers in the 100- and 200 butterfly events, as well as the 200 IM, where he placed second at the NCAA Championships. GETTING IT DONE IN THE POOL AND THE CLASSROOM As often as the Longhorns get things done in the pool, they are just as likely to excel in the classroom. No fewer than 15 Longhorns were selected to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 team. Texas led the league in academic all-conference selections, which included 14 first-team honorees. Dumais in representing the United States at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. The group accounted for nine total medals - eight golds and one silver. Berens collected his first Olympic gold medal by helping Team USA to a new world record in the 800m freestyle relay. Berens joined teammate Dave Walters in the event’s preliminary round before joining Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Peter Vanderkaay in the finals. Peirsol, competing in his third Olympiad, re-wrote his world record on his way to gold in the 100m backstroke. Peirsol, who also took silver in the 200m backstroke, swam the backstroke leg on the world record-setting 400m medley relay that also featured Brendan Hansen, who placed fifth in the 100m breaststroke in Beijing. Ian Crocker and Garrett Weber-Gale swam in the butterfly and freestyle legs, respectively, in the 400m medley relay preliminary round to also earn gold in the event. Weber-Gale joined Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak to win a thrilling 400m freestyle relay in which Lezak rallied the Americans from behind in the final 50 meters to seize the gold. Scott Spann added a fifth-place finish in the 200m breaststroke, and Troy Dumais, competing in his third Olympiad, took sixth in the three-meter springboard diving event.
