About DePelchin Children’s Center
DePelchin Children’s Center is committed to meeting the needs of Houston’s children as the largest, most comprehensive provider of mental health,
prevention and early intervention, and child welfare services. Caring for more than 20,000 children and their families each year, DePelchin offers a
range of services including counseling, psychiatry, residential treatment, programs for at-risk youths, parent education, foster care, and adoption.
Today, more than 30 different programs are available to children and families at schools, community sites and in their homes as well as at the main
Houston campus and five satellite offices. The center continues to be recognized at the state and national level for its cutting-edge programs, including
being awarded an esteemed federal grant as a leading child trauma expert in Texas. A non-profit organization serving Houston since 1892, DePelchin
gratefully receives its support from government grants and fees, United Way agencies, corporations, foundations, and individuals.

Letter from the
Board Chairman
At DePelchin, we have an important responsibility—doing our part to ensure that all children are safe and
healthy. It is a responsibility we take very seriously, especially given the issues we face in our community.
I am amazed by the statistics I see. More than 30,000 reports of abuse and neglect of children are recorded each year in Harris County. More than half of these cases involve
teen parents who have not yet developed strong parenting skills. Currently, Harris County has the 2nd highest adolescent pregnancy rate in Texas; and, on a state level, Texas and
California lead the nation with the highest incidence of teen pregnancy. It has also been estimated that more than 214,000 children in our community have a diagnosable
mental health condition. Mental health disorders do not discriminate, affecting families in all neighborhoods.
Although these issues are challenging, DePelchin is tackling them head on as the region’s largest and most comprehensive provider of children’s mental health, prevention and
early intervention, and child welfare services. This year’s Annual Report highlights the success of the 2009 fiscal year and the generous support we received from people like you
who helped us fulfill our mission.
One area I would particularly like to highlight is DePelchin’s mental health services. Earlier this year, I announced that we were embarking on an ambitious expansion in mental
health with the intent of building upon existing programs and adding to our team of experts. The groundwork for this expansion actually began in 2009 with the launch of DePelchin
Autism Services and the hiring of additional psychologist and psychiatrist staff members. Futhermore, DePelchin was the recipient of an esteemed federal grant to treat trauma,
recognizing us as a leading children’s trauma expert in Texas. I am pleased with the progress we made last year and look forward to expanding our services further in 2010.

DePelchin offers comprehensive mental health
services including individual and family counseling, psychiatric
evaluation and medication management, psychological testing,
as well as access to DePelchin’s residential treatment centers,
which house children on one of two campuses for
specialized, intensive treatment. Our team

Foster Care,
Adoption
and PostAdoption
DePelchin’s child welfare
services encompass foster care, adoption,
and post-adoption. In some cases, children
who have been removed from their birth
homes by Child Protective Services can
be reunited with their families. Otherwise,
these children are placed in foster care or
adoptive homes. We also provide infant
adoption services to birth mothers and
fathers desiring to place their unborn or
newborn infants into adoptive homes.

Holiday Project
The holidays can be a difficult time for many children and families in Houston. Last season, our community
came together to give the gift of hope, fulfilling the holiday wishes of more than 1,300 children. Individuals,
families, organizations and corporations generously donated their funds, gifts and time to ensure our
children did not go without. More than 5,000 gifts were distributed — including much-needed baby care
products, clothing and school supplies.
