OUR FACTORY 3 COMPANY HISTORY PENBRO CONVERTERS (PTY) LTD. was established in the year 1949 by Mr. Penchard and Mr. Hutton-Brown. The first three letters of each name were used to form the name PENBRO. The new company started manufacturing short-wave converters for AM radio receivers - hence the 'CONVERTERS' in the name. In 1951 the company was officially registered under this name, but in the same year Mr. Penchard left, taking with him the radio related business. He started alone under the name 'Amalgamated Radios’. Meanwhile, Mr. Hutton-Brown guided Penbro Converters in a different direction. The operation flourished, manufacturing Transformers, Wire-wound Resistors, and Coils for contactors and relays for Otis Elevators over a period of 26 years. Gradually more complex electro-mechanical devices i.e. mechanical phase sequence relays, were added to the manufacturing program. In 1964 Mr. H. van Aarde joined the firm. He built a winding machine to produce edge wound resistors used mainly on DC traction locomotives. This became an important activity of the company. After manufacturing resistors, transformers, chokes, transductors and sheet metal enclosures, Penbro progressed to the manufacturing of power electronics and subsequently KELNICK DEVELOPMENTS was acquired in 1974. By 1977 Penbro had outgrown its manufacturing facility in Fordsburg. While the sales office stayed in Fordsburg, the manufacturing plant was relocated to a factory at Babelegi Industrial Estate, Hammanskraal, approximately 50km north of Pretoria. Later a store area of 1400m² was added to the 2000m² factory area. In 1992, larger premises were obtained in Babelegi and in 2005 a second factory was established. The total floor area was ± 6600m². The Sales office was re-located to Pretoria. The name of the company was changed to PENBRO KELNICK (PTY) LTD. in 1980 to incorporate both trade names of our main products. One often wonders how it was possible to compete against industrial automation with a labour-intensive facility like Penbro and survive for 50 years, manufacturing such a broad spectrum of products, but touring the factory and meeting Hermann, somewhere on the floor tightening screws, packaging resistors or simply giving advice on where to send a child for future tertiary education, soon explains the recipe of our success. Maintaining a horizontal management style throughout the ranks of the company, each individual in Penbro is an equal and in his or her own right managing daily tasks. Being employed by Penbro puts you in perspective of being your own boss and operating your own company with the support of - Hermann van Aarde. 4 QUALITY & BEE CERTIFICATION 5 © Copyright 2013:- Penbro COMPANY STRUCTURE 6 RESISTORS - WIRE WOUND RESISTOR APPLICATIONS RESISTOR COATING • Heaters • Dynamic braking of AC drives • Crane control systems •Load testing of energy sources • Harmonic filters Our world-class, green silicon-ceramic is used where resistors are subjected to harsh environmental conditions: • Temperature of 600°C • Salt spray • Moisture • Chemical corrosion • Thermal cycling • UV light BRAKE RESISTOR ENCLOSED BRAKE RESISTOR ENCLOSED 1.5kW PLATE RESISTOR TEST RESISTOR ENCLOSED COATED WIRE WOUND RESISTORS 7 RESISTORS - EDGE WOUND Penbro Kelnick began manufacturing wire wound resistors in 1951 for internal applications. The demand for edge wound resistors came with the upgrading of railway locomotives from diesel to electric powered units. Penbro built its own resistor winding machines and by 1967 was in full production to cater for this new market. Ribbon and grid type resistors soon followed to supply the South African Railways with original and replacement parts for various types of rail applications. This effectively reduces corrosion of the pipeline. Feartures include: • • • • • • All weather enclosures Variac, transductor or thyristor control Analogue or digital meters Single, dual or multiple outputs Fixed, adjustable and combined outputs built to ISO90021:2008 and SABS0142 standards The most widely used method of cathodic protection is by impressing an electrical current between the pipeline to be protected and an anode buried in the ground (usually above the pipeline) This creates a dielectric effect: the buried anode is consumed instead of the pipeline, caused by the natural corrosion cycle which occurs when two different metals are placed in an electrolyte. Ideally a pipeline-to-soil potential of 1 to 2 volt should be maintained, but this is impractical as it would require an infinite amount of power sources. On the other hand, a pipeline-to-soil potential of more than 2 volt at any point could cause separation of the coating from the pipeline. The commonly accepted practice is to install widely spaced power sources along the line with a higher concentration of protection in areas where corrosion is more likely to occur. The extreme ends of the line are normally not protected as well as the rest, and as the pipe ages, conditions deteriorate and higher currents need to be induced. To maintain required voltages and currents for maximum distances and best protection effects we implement dual or multiple output rectifiers with adjustable features. 21 ELECTROPLATING RECTIFIERS Penbro manufactures a complete range of plating rectifiers with low ripple from as little as 100W for jewelers applications, to 200kW sets for barrel plating plants. Applications vary from hard-chrome plating to gold plating and even polishing rectifiers have been designed and manufactured with the following features: • Mobile or fixed enclosures to customer preference • Adjustable output voltage and current • Optional forward and reverse polarity control • Natural, forced air or oil cooled units • Digital or analogue meters and indications • Manual, automatic or PLC interfaced control • Enclosures to IP55 / IP65 for hazardous chemical environments • Built to ISO9002 and SABS0142 standards • Versions from 5V to 100Vdc & 10 to 8000A 5000 AMP OIL COOLED RECTIFIER 22 RAIL SIGNALS INVERTERS Our inverter is one of the reasons we are currently the preferred supplier of all rail signals power equipment to the local market. The Penbro inverter for rail signal applications is a reliable source of AC power, operating from a wide range of DC input voltages. It provides a stable, synchronized AC voltage of 110…380V, single or three phase to the load. This is achieved using high efficiency pulse-width-modulation switching with IGBT’s. The NBDD system is a diesel driven unit with a large flywheel, where the NBDK system has a kinetic energy storage module for starting the engine through energy transfer during mains failures, resulting in a < 5% frequency “drift”. Both systems provide low frequency tolerances in the event of mains failure, and very high efficiency during stand-by operation. Individual selection of systems components through careful evaluation helps further increase the reliability and thus ensures high availability of power to the end user. Combined with a diesel engine, switch gear and filter the end result is the most reliable form of uninterrupted power available. Two different configurations are currently offered with the following features: • Operating voltage up to 1000V • Output power rating of 25 to 2000kVA • Power factor improvement to at lest 0.96 • Low MTTR and high MTBF in excess of 20 years • High choke quality and alternator efficiency • Optimal mains supervision, low maintenance costs • Continuous high overload capability 38 INSTALLATION & SERVICES INSTALLATION Penbro installs and commissions new equipment and has executed large installations at Telkom, TFMC, Metro, Spoornet, Sasol, Bank of Tanzania, and Malawi .
