Systems Mechanic
This program is offered in
Semester 2 and is open to
students graduating from
grade 12 in June.
A Refrigeration Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic
installs and maintains air conditioning and refrigeration
systems. Skilled apprentices plan, layout and start up
systems and maintain the electrical components of the
system.
The Toronto District School
Board, The Ministry of Training,
Colleges, and Universities
(MTCU), and George Brown
College offer this opportunity for
students who are interested in
pursuing a career as a
Residential Air Conditioning
Systems Mechanic.
TO QUALIFY, YOU MUST:
An Accelerated Ontario Youth
Apprenticeship Program.
Upon graduation, OYAP ends
and you must find paid work
in the industry as a regular,
registered apprentice in order
to continue your trade training
and qualify to write your
Certificate of Qualification
licensing exam.

have a keen interest in working as a Refrigeration AC
Systems Mechanic (RACSM)

be at least 16 years old, eligible to work in Ontario and
have a Social Insurance number

be in good academic standing and have completed at
least 24 credits by February, ready to graduate in June,
(including all compulsory courses, community hours and
literacy component required for Ontario Secondary
School Diploma). Good math skills ensure success.

have successfully completed a co-op placement in the
trade or have work experience

have a semester two co-op employer with hiring
potential, e.g., non-union employer

be willing to travel to George Brown College, Casa
Loma Campus and a cooperative education placement
full-time in semester two

What is Apprenticeship?

PROGRAM

Apprenticeship is a post-secondary education and training program for people who
want to work in the skilled professions and who enjoy learning by doing

90% of apprenticeship training is acquired through hands-on instruction that
employers provide at the workplace

10% is classroom instruction that usually takes place at a community college or an
approved training organization
While in high school, OYAP
students:

An apprentice is a person who is enrolled in a skilled profession for the purpose of
learning the specific skills related to that profession


An apprenticeship refers to the learning and training, both in school and on the job,
that takes from 2-5 years to complete, depending on the profession
Must travel to a specific
training location assigned
by the Ministry of Training,
Colleges and Universities

An apprentice becomes a skilled professional called a journeyperson when he/she
receives a Certificate of Qualification. This happens once the apprentice has
completed 100% of the training (in-school and work-based) and passed an
examination.


What is the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)?
In most cases, an apprentice must have a high school diploma before beginning an
apprenticeship. The exception is the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).
OYAP is a special program that promotes careers in the skilled professions to high school
students. OYAP allows you to earn credits towards your high school diploma while you
gain experience and knowledge at an apprenticeship placement. For some careers, the
Toronto District School Board offers centrally co-ordinated Accelerated OYAP programs
as well as Specialized Tech Studies /Co-op OYAP programs and Regular Co-op OYAP
programs.
How do I apply for this Accelerated OYAP program?
The application process for this Accelerated OYAP program is as follows:
1.
Students, parents, and teachers should attend the information session for this
program. For more details on this information session, application due date, and
interview dates, speak to your Guidance Counsellor or a Cooperative Education
teacher at your school.
2.
Together with your Guidance Counsellor or a Cooperative Education teacher at your
school, complete the OYAP Application Form. Complete and fax your application
package including the following:
 a completed Accelerated Application Form
 an up-to-date resume outlining related experience
 a copy of your most recent Credit Counselling Summary
 a Trillium report of your attendance for the current semester
3.
You will be interviewed by a team that includes representatives from the Toronto
District School Board and the partnering training delivery agent (e.g., instructors from
a college or training centre).
4.
At your interview, you will be assessed on the following:
 Personal Presentation  Communication Skills
 Motivation
 Attitude
This program is contingent
upon attracting enough
suitable candidates.
 Basic Math Skills
You are encouraged to consult with your parent(s), your Guidance Counsellor, or a Cooperative
Education teacher as you complete the application package and prepare for the interview.
