VISITING STUDENTS (See also our Visiting Students webpage at www.nuigalway.ie/history) GENERAL NOTES ON HISTORY MODULES We are pleased that you have chosen to do History modules during your year abroad. We would like to welcome you and hope you have a wonderful experience here in Galway. Module Choice: Please check with History Dept for up-to-date syllabus and timetables. You may choose from both the 2nd year and 3rd year list of modules. There are a limited number of places for visiting students on 3rd year Seminar modules and 2nd Year Colloquia. Please note the special registration procedures for these modules below. Other than the Seminars and the Colloquia, there are no restrictions on visiting student numbers registering for History lecture modules (5 ects modules). However, if a particular module attracts more students than the lecture hall holds, a lottery system may be put in place for visiting students. Module Registration (Online for Lecture modules (5ects) See below for Seminars and Colloquia) a. You do not need to get approval from the History department for lecture modules (5 ects) that you want to do. Do note, however, that you DO need approval from History if you want to do a Seminar or Colloquium. (see below) b. There is no "audit" type registration in NUI Galway. If you register for a module, we have to return a mark for you. If you do not want to be assessed for a module (you just want to sit in and don't intend to use it in fulfilment of your year abroad obligations), ask the lecturer for permission. Module Assessment: For visiting students, all History modules are continuous assessment. Assessment for Lecture modules consists of a mid-term essay/coursework and a final extended essay. Lecturers will inform you of their marking scheme. Note that Seminars & Colloquia have a different marking scheme and different weighting to the other modules. Module Descriptions: Module Descriptions are available on the NUI Galway History web page. Go to the Visiting Students Information page at http://www.nuigalway.ie/history/. There is a link to the descriptions on this page. History Department Contacts: Róisín Healy: Erasmus & N. (8:30am – 4:30pm) VISITING STUDENTS APPLICATION TO TAKE SEMINARS & COLLOQUIA What is a Seminar or Colloquium? Seminars (final year) and Colloquia (2nd year) carry double weighting (10 ECTS). They are small group teaching modules and have a mandatory attendance requirement. Students are expected to participate orally during classes, prepare presentations and write an extended research essay for assessment. Final year Seminars and 2nd year Colloquia are not to be chosen lightly and they are not recommended for students who are not majoring in History in their home universities. Applying for a Seminar or Colloquium There are a maximum of three places for visiting students on each Seminar and Colloquium. To obtain a place on a Seminar or Colloquium: Speak to or e-mail the module convenor (lecturer) about the colloquium or seminar beforehand to ascertain whether the module will suit you and whether there are any areas of concern. If the module convenor gives you a place on the colloquium or seminar, s/he will inform Helena Condon and Maura Walsh, who will add you to the list and will complete your registration.
