FM labels can be provided for all sizes between those listed above and some larger sizes. Options Electric Release (Electric Thermolatch or Wall Mounted Electric Rigging Release) - No UL listing, unless they use an MCABE link. - In order to carry the FM label, each vent must be energized separately. This means that if the units are to be energized by smoke detectors, each vent must have its own smoke detector and each detector must be located at the vent it is to activate. For panel control each unit must be individually energized and controlled uniquely. Motorized Fire Vents and Motorized Acoustical Fire Vents - No UL listing - FM label would not be affected with the addition of motorized operation for regular FM approved Fire Vents and Acoustical Fire Vents. Domed Fire Vents - No UL listing. - No FM approval. UL & FM.doc PROPRIETARY Bilco information for Authorized Personnel Only. Both Underwriters Laboratory Inc. (UL) and Factory Manual Research Corporation (FM) are independent, non-profit organizations that test products to be sure that they meet certain standards. Once tested and approved (or listed) the manufacturing procedures and processes must not be changed and must be periodically checked to assure compliance. UL and FM certification is not required by law; however, customers often look for this certification before they buy. Requirements and Test Procedures 1. Bilco submits drawings and calculations for FM engineering review. 2. Tests A. Melt Fusible Link. B. Manual operation using inside and outside manual pull release cables without disturbing the fusible link. C. Cycles – Unit operated 60 cycles to evaluate reliability and service life. D. After opening, hold open arms checked for positive hold open in 90 degrees full open position. E. Simulated wind uplift – Covers must withstand 30-psf (1.435KN/m2) uplift for one minute and remain closed. F. Simulated horizontal wind load – Covers must open and remain open when subjected to 45-mph (72Km/hr) wind load (5 psf (0.240KN/m2) horizontal load). G. Simulated snow load – Covers must open and lock when subjected to 10-psf (0.479KN/m2) exterior loading on cover. H. Live load – Covers must structurally support a 40-psf (1.915KN/m2) live load. I. Units will be clearly labeled with manufacturer’s name and address, model name, FM approved symbol, the words “Factory Mutual Approved” and the words “Snow Rated 10psf”. J. 3. Each vent shall also be clearly marked “Operate Immediately Following Installation” Manufacturer’s responsibility is to build according to submitted drawings. Manufacturer must notify FM of any changes and get permission for those changes. 4. Inspections – FM will conduct periodic inspections to assure that units are being manufactured as originally approved. Note: UL inspects 4 times a year; FM inspects once per year.
