THE WARATAH WEEKLY
God never blinks
Foundation Headmaster Dr Stuart Quarmby
I have removed my editorial from the front page this week and, instead, share with you the winning
speech from the recent Public Speaking competition held at Wollondilly. In the same week when it was
reported that the Scouts have removed reference to “Australia” in this Country for fear of offending
someone’s sensitivies, it is a timely reminder of who we are and what we stand for. The winner was
Tara Boyd from Year 6 and here is her speech –
G’Day
I’m not sure how many of you have travelled overseas, I have travelled a lot for my age. I have
represented my country twice, and I can tell you right now that putting on my Australian tracksuit
makes me proud, not only because of my achievements but what I am representing my country,
Australia.
Australia is a sunburnt country, the largest island in the world, red dirt, golden beaches, the Great
Barrier Reef, the Daintree rainforest, Uluru, vegemite, Aeroplane jelly and so much more.
It also means mateship, trust, empathy, sharing a laugh, sharing a tear.
Australia is known for our use of slang. I guess we are lazy that way, but for me personally, I find it
funny and I also don’t think we should change it; it’s who we are and what we are known for. We are
also known for “shrimp on the barbeque” or, as we like to call it, prawns on the Barbie.
CRIKEY! Did you see that big red ‘roo over there? Of course, that is another thing Australia is known
for, our animals. We are home to some of the deadliest animals in the world. Australia has nine out of
ten of the deadliest snakes in the world. We also have the funnel web spider, blue ringed octopus, and
the box jelly fish, but that is just to name a few.
Australia is also lucky to have some rare animals like the koala, cockatoo, emu, platypus, kangaroo
and the wombat. The emu and kangaroo are on the Australian coat of arms. Did you know that
Australia is the only country that eats the animals featured on their coat of arms?
Around the world Australia is known as the lucky country. When I arrive home from travelling I look
out the window and I see the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge and I then realise why the Diggers
fought so hard to defend this great country I am proud to call home.
This is My Island Home.
I come from a land down under.
I am a true blue Aussie and I am proud to say it.
FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK
Secondary Student Class Changes – Grace, Faith and Hope
Parents are reminded that class memberships change from year to year. These changes are
based on a student’s academic performance and on pastoral care issues.
Please note that a student’s ongoing placement in the Grace class (eg Year 7 into 8) isn’t guaranteed.
It is based on a student’s academic performance and the academic results of new students who are
enrolled at the College.
In 2016 Year 7, placement in the Grace class is based on academic performance. The Faith and
Hope classes will be of mixed ability and based on pastoral care factors. Students will remain in their
group for most lessons, except for Creative Arts and Mandatory Technology.
Year 8 Classes are based on Academic performance for English, Mathematics and Science. English
and Mathematics will be designated as 1, 2 and 3. In other words, a student in 8 English_1 won’t
necessarily be in 8 Maths_1 and vica-versa. Science and all other subjects, except Creative Arts and
Mandatory Technology, will be based on Grace, Faith and Hope. Grace membership will be based on
Science results, Faith and Hope will be mixed ability.
Years 9 and 10 students will be allocated to English, Mathematics and Science on their academic
performance. English and Mathematics will be designated as 1, 2 and 3. Science and all other
subjects, except the Electives, will be based on Grace, Faith and Hope. Grace membership will be
based on Science results, Faith and Hope will be mixed ability.
Awards
Parents please be aware that to meet the deadlines for reports, assemblies and presentation nights,
the cut - off date date for awards for Primary students was Monday, 16 November. For Secondary
students it was Monday, 23 November. This means that students can still receive a Merit card for
Academic Effort and Achievement, College Contribution, Sport and Service after this date, however
they may not appear on your child’s Semester 2 College Report and they will not count in
the tally to higher awards. We thank you for your understanding in this matter.

PASTORAL MATTERS
Preparation for 2016
To ensure that students are best prepared for the transition back to College in 2016 all
students and parents are advised to ensure that all aspects of College uniform are purchased
during the break and are in line with our guidelines in all areas:
Reminders:

Students will return in full Summer Uniform.

Students should return with appropriate hair cuts and without hair that has been altered in colour
as per our guidelines.

Skirt length of Girls K-10 and 11-12 may need to be checked prior to return to ensure that it is
below the knee for both variations of the skirt.

A small number of students have had to be spoken to about the type of school shoe that is
acceptable at the College. Black jogger style shoes or skate black flat shoes with clear soles are
not acceptable. Shoes need to be Black, polishable, leather, flat heeled, lace-up school shoes.
This translates to what most be would say is a standard school shoe. Please ask for clarification if
unsure prior to purchase.

Sport shoes need to be predominantly white joggers (running shoes), appropriate for physical
activity in PDHPE and Sport. Students have been spoken to about plain white canvas or skater
type shoes, these are not appropriate.

Please check the condition of your child’s College hat during the break as it may need to be
replaced if it is in poor condition.

For boys a plain black leather belt is necessary and must be worn daily.

Holiday periods are also a time where students can make poor decisions about piercings. The
College has very clear guidelines, students are encouraged to make decisions that ensure that
they remain compliant in this area.

Girls currently in Year 10 need to make sure that they have the Senior Girls’ Socks when they
return from the holidays. These are the ones with the black stripe and are available from the
College Office or from Mr Toland.
Mufti Day Term 4
It has become a tradition at the College that on the last day of Term 4 we allow students to dress in
Mufti and for students in Years 5-9 to attend Wollondilly Leisure Centre for part of the day. We do this
as part of an SRC initiative to support the charities that have been identified by the SRC.
This year WAC students are supporting Books for Africa. This is an initiative aimed at assisting to
resource African school libraries with books. In many African schools libraries exist but the shelves are
empty, this makes learning even more difficult than some of the already obvious challenges that exist in
African education. The books will be collected and shipped to Africa specifically targeting very poor slum
areas near the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. The books will help provide learning resources that can
empower the students in these schools and develop essential literacy skills to provide an opportunity for
these students to learn, fulfil their potential and have greater life opportunities.
How can WAC students support this initiative? There are two ways:
1.
Bring a book in from home that is used but in good condition and donate it to the cause.
2.
Make a $2.00 coin donation to assist with the transport of the books to Africa.
The books and money will be collected on Wednesday, 2; Thursday, 3 and Friday, 4 December.
Our Term 3 Mufti Day supported Samaritan’s Purse and raised $920.00. The Christmas boxes that we
packed have been sent to Cambodia and will be providing very poor children with gifts that they
otherwise would not have had.
It would be great if all students could make a generous donation both of a book and a gold coin so that
we could really support the children of Africa.
Dress Standards for Mufti Day
 The normal College expectations apply to hair and jewellery.
 Students must wear enclosed shoes – no thongs or sandals
 Singlet tops or tops showing exposed mid riffs are also excluded
 Clothing worn should not have slogans with inappropriate language or messages.
 Shorts - leg length should be at least to mid – thigh.
One piece swimming costumes must be worn whilst at Wollondilly Leisure Centre.
Students have been warned that if they don’t comply with these rules, they may be sent home or
withdrawn from the day’s activities.
Senior Chapel
On Monday, 30 November all of Years 9-12 will be involved in Senior Chapel for the Term. The focus
of the Chapel is on Self-Respect and what the Bible says about this topic. Students will meet for
Chapel during the Pastoral Period and will move into the Auditorium in their Roll Call House Groups
for Years 9-10 and Christian Studies classes for Year 12. A big thank you to Mr Favretti who will be
delivering the talk as well as the student leaders who will be involved in organising and running the
Chapel.
Peer Support Training
A reminder to the Year 9 students involved in Peer Support Training that it will take place from
8.10 am - 2.30 pm on Thursday, 26 November and Friday, 27 November in the Flynn Amphitheatre.
Please meet Mr Toland and Mr Cassidy there for each session. At the conclusion of the training the
12 leaders from boys and girls will be appointed with the others who received the training on
stand-by to deliver the program in 2016.

PRIMARY PICK UP ARRANGEMENTS
From time to time, there are changes in the pick up arrangements. If the normal pick up
arrangements change, please either write in the diaries or ring the Office for the message to
be passed on. It is important that we know your children are safe. This will also help to avoid
conversations with staff regarding the children's movements.

asked to supply their own lollies. This activity will occur in Week 9 during normal timetabled German lessons. A nut free/gluten free/dairy free option is also available. Concerned parents can check the ingredients list on the following link:

SPEECH AFTERNOON
Last week we held the finals of the Primary Public Speaking afternoon. Twelve students from
Stages 2 and 3 presented a prepared speech on Australia is… It was a wonderful afternoon
celebrating the uniqueness of Australia. Speech topics range from unique animals of
Australia, to capital cities, and of course vegemite.
The adjudicators were very impressed by the standard of the speeches and it was a difficult decision to
decide who would take 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
While the judges were making a final decision the audience were entertained by Mikinley Millen,
singing Do You hear What I Hear, which she sang very well.
After an in depth discussion the decision was made and the results were as follows, 3rd place, Kelsie
McKinley, 2nd place Jack Carroll and 1st place the winner for this year was Tara Boyd.
I would like to congratulate all the students who presented a speech, as all speeches were very
interesting and your achievements are commended as you made the finals of the Public Speaking
afternoon.
Well done.

WORKING BEE REPORT
We had a great day on Saturday at our Term 4 Working Bee. The weather was perfect for
working in the gardens and even though the main job was to revamp the K-2 playground
equipment garden,
other gardens were tidied up as well but the main focus was to clear out all the Lamandras
and Grevilleas and replace them with new plants similar to other areas of our College.
It was a great day with lots achieved. Mrs Saint John had some book covering done as well.
A big thanks to the Wollondilly Anglican Community Church who provided a scrumptious morning tea
and the P&F hospitality team who provided the BBQ lunch. There was more than enough to eat at
both morning tea and lunch.

But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. You will be with
child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus”. Luke 1:30,31
We should have looked at this one a bit earlier in the year, considering the duration of an average
pregnancy. But, except for a few serious pedants, it seems to work better at this time of year. Before
the trees, the presents, the parties, the tinsel, the food and the credit card debt, there was a promise
to a young virgin that she would be the mother of God's Son, who would be the Saviour the whole
world needs. Good news indeed.

PRAYER POINTS
Thank God

That we live in the “Lucky” Country – perhaps Blessed Country.

For the freedom that our Diggers fought so hard to preserve.

For our kids here.
Ask God

For wisdom in protecting our precious Flora and Fauna.

That we never lose the things that make us uniquely Australian, like G’Day.

To continue to watch over our land and to help with the healing in France.

To root out the vile cowards who commit dastardly acts on innocent people and
use His name as a cover for their pleasure in atrocity.
Psalm 127:1 Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain.
Excellence, Endurance, Eternity.
