Over the last week we’ve seen floods and golf-ball sized
hailstones – quite a change from the promised hosepipe ban,
but we hope it didn't stop you getting into the House. The
House suffered a little with flooding, but the water was soon
cleared away.
The Olympics will soon be with us and the arrival of the Olympic
torch in Loughborough is imminent on 3 July. Our member of
staff, Cherie Tinenti, is thrilled to be carrying the torch.

The Torch is set to arrive in Loughborough on the A6004 Ling Road
and Epinal Way where it will be carried along to University Road and
into the grounds of Loughborough University where it will snake its way
around the campus.

The Torch will leave the University onto the A512 Ashby Road where it
will make its way into Loughborough Town Centre via Market Street,
Market Place, The Rushes and Baxter Gate before joining the A60
Nottingham Road where it will be driven to Hoton.
11.20
The Torch will arrive on Prestwold Lane in Hoton and travel through the
village centre before joining the A60 Rempstone Road where it will be
driven to Wymeswold for the final leg of its Charnwood journey.

GARDENS @ JSH
The gardens of JSH are attracting lots of positive
comments and giving pleasure to local residents
and visitors to the House.
Keen gardener and volunteer at JSH, David
Beaumont, has provided plants, shrubs and small
trees from his own garden and the garden of the
Chair of the JSH Social Painting Group, Marion
Hull, who is very interested in flowers and garden
design. They both hope that the garden will
continue to flourish
They would also like to thank the local nurseryman who donated some annual
bedding plants which have enhanced the area.
CANCER SELF-HELP GROUP
This month meetings will be held on Monday, 2nd, 9th, 23rd and 30th. On the
2nd Shamanism will be the topic for discussion with Venita, and Patrick
Kingsley will hopefully confirm for the 23rd.
MELA (10 JUNE 2012)
JSH and VAC Chief Executive, Neil
Lambert, as part of the
Loughborough Mela committee was

Loughborough and Charnwood
Borough Council, Human Rights and Equalities Charnwood, Voluntary Action
Charnwood, Charnwood Arts and local community groups and individuals.
This year the event was attended by an estimated 6,000 people.

‘Partnerships for Employment’ award from the RNIB. The award was
presented to Bobby by Rosemary Conley on behalf of the organisation and
was to recognise our ‘outstanding contribution to the employment of people
with disabilities’.
LOUGHBOROUGH IN BLOOM
Love Loughborough is supporting ‘Loughborough in Bloom 2012’ and has
supplied extra hanging baskets to businesses around the town centre to bring
a bit of colour. At JSH we have benefitted from an extra basket by the front
door.
We are excited to be entered into ‘Business in Bloom’ and our frontage will be
judged on Monday, 9 July.
The Charnwood Gardening Project Allotment based at Epinal Way is entered
in East Midlands in Bloom (judging date Wednesday, 11th July) and the RHS
Britain in Bloom (judging date Friday, 3rd August).
We are also delighted that the Loughborough in Bloom team have opted to
hold their celebratory lunch in the Café @ JSH following the LIB judging
session on both Wednesday, 11 July and Friday, 3 August. Please note that
this does mean that seating in the Café on these dates will be limited.

GARDENING CLUB
Members of the JSH Gardening Club recently enjoyed a
morning at the beautiful Consall Hall Landscape Gardens,
near Cheadle. They are the result of one man's inspiration
over 50 years. In the afternoon we visited the National
Memorial Arboretum near Alrewas, a truly special, inspiring
and peaceful place.
The club will now have a summer break, but meet again in the autumn, on
Thursday September 13th; we look forward to greeting old and new
members. Further information from David (Chairman) on 01509 215605.

HOLIDAY DESK NEWS
I trust the group staying at the ever-popular Potters Leisure Resort this week
are having a great time. I shall be very surprised if they are not and will
provide a full report in the next edition. I shall shortly be compiling the 2013
programme (can it be that time of year again?!) So if you have any requests
or suggestions do let me know.
Till then there are still SEVEN holidays to choose from this year's list.

JSH SOCIAL DRAWING AND PAINTING GROUP
The group are pleased to announce that Lois Child has taken over as
Treasurer of the group this year.
Norman’s soldier painting, as reported in the April JSH Newsletter, is now
permanently in the museum at the National Arboretum at Alrewas.
Judith’s latest painting of Lady in Blue Sari is on the website of Patching’s Art
Gallery.
Barrie Tebbatt was on our waiting
list and eventually joined us over 5
years ago, since then his daughter
Claire Roberts has become a
member. They are both talented
artists and tutor Carol encourages
their very different techniques.
Barrie is currently working on his
10th Venice scene – four of which
are shown below.

VOLUNTEERS TOGETHER EVENT
On Thursday, 7 June 2012 an afternoon tea was held at JSH to recognise the
fantastic work and support given by our volunteers at JSH and at Shepshed
Volunteer Centre.
Joanne Clarke, our new Volunteering Coordinator, opened the event with an
informative speech praising the wonderful work undertaken by our volunteers
in a vast and diverse range of tasks. The tasks range from transport,
gardening, social and fundraising, befriending, catering, admin and reception,
trustees and support for many of the activities which take place daily in JSH.
Nicky Morgan, MP, also spoke about the importance of volunteering and took
great pleasure in handing out the name badges to JSH volunteers. She said,
‘I am very aware that those who volunteer are often unsung heroes – from
serving delicious food to knitting items to be sold in the John Storer House
shop to driving minibuses or running line dancing classes there are so many
people locally who benefit from the great work done by our volunteers. I
wanted to say thank you to everyone who does volunteer and who ensures
we have such a thriving community spirit in Loughborough and Shepshed.
And also to say thank you to Joanne and Angie and everyone else who
supports the volunteers.’
Jill Vincent, Trustee of JSH added, ‘This year our volunteers have stayed with
us in a very loyal way in a very difficult re-structuring time so the event was to
thank them for their on-going support’.
It is planned to hold twice yearly events to continue to thank our volunteers
during which new volunteers will be given their badges.
SHORTBREAD GOLD MEDAL BISCUITS
Everyone's a winner with these easy
millionaire shortbread gold medal biscuits.
Butter fudge makes a great cheat's caramel.
For the base:
• 120g/4oz plain flour
• 50g/1oz caster sugar
• 120g/4oz butter
• 50g/1oz semolina
For the topping:
•
•
•
24 pieces butter fudge sweets
75g/2oz dark chocolate
gold lustre
Preheat the oven to 160C/310F/Gas 2 and lightly grease a baking sheet.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Place all the ingredients for the base into a food processor and
blend together. Lightly flour a smooth surface, then remove the dough
and knead lightly until smooth. Leave to rest in the fridge for 30
minutes.
On a lightly-floured surface roll out the dough to a thickness of about
5mm/¼in. Cut out 12 x 6cm/2in rounds and place on the baking sheet. Prick
twice with a fork. If you want to string your gold medals, use a drinking straw
to make a hole in each biscuit.
Bake for approximately 30-40 minutes until golden-brown and
firm. Set aside to cool.
Once the biscuits have cooled. Soften two pieces of fudge (this can
be done by massaging the fudge by hand or warming it in 10 second bursts in
a microwave), knead into a ball and roll or pat into a circle the same size as
the biscuits. Press onto the surface of the shortbread and leave to set on a
tray for 30 minutes. Repeat for the remaining biscuits.
Break the chocolate into small pieces and place in a bowl over a
pan of gently simmering water (do not let the bowl touch the water).
Melt the chocolate, stirring infrequently, until smooth. Leave to cool
slightly. Pour the chocolate over the biscuits until they are completely
covered. Set aside until the chocolate has set, then brush the chocolate
with the gold lustre.

AMERICAN JOKE
Farmer Joe was hit by a truck and decided his injuries from the accident were
serious enough to take the company to court. In court the lawyer was questioning
Farmer Joe, "Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine?"
Farmer Joe said, "Well I'll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favourite
mule Bessie into the....". "I didn't ask for any details," the lawyer interrupted, "just
answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!"
Farmer Joe said, "I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the
road...." The lawyer interrupted again, “Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that,
at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that
he was just fine. Now after the accident he is trying to sue my client and I believe
he is a fraud." By this time the Judge was fairly interested in Farmer Joe's answer
and said to the lawyer, "I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favourite mule
Bessie."
Joe thanked the Judge and proceeded, "Well as I was saying, I had just loaded
Bessie, my favourite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway
when this huge truck ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side.
I was hurting real bad and didn't want to move. However, I could hear ole Bessie
moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly
after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie
moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, he took out
his gun and shot her between the eyes.
Then the Patrolman came across the road with his gun in his hand and looked at
me. He said, "Your mule was in such bad shape I had to shoot her. How are you
feeling?"
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
‘I feel compelled to say how absolutely beautiful our gardens are looking on the
front and side of John Storer House. All thanks to David Beaumont, a great
volunteer, who obviously has a lot of expertise in gardening. Volunteers like David
are hard to find and the connection with the House is more extraordinary.
David is a great friend of Marion Hull, whose Aunt, Harriet Brooks (remembered on
the plaque in the foyer), made a substantial donation to the House many years ago.
Part of that donation had to be used for the garden and so it is fitting that all these
years later the garden is remembered by someone close to her family.
Volunteering is a great way to support the House and again many thanks to David
for all his hard work.’

Thank you to everyone who has helped us to compile the Newsletter.
