VOLUNTEERS TOGETHER EVENT On Thursday, 7 June 2012 an afternoon tea was held at JSH to recognise the fantastic work and support given by our volunteers at JSH and at Shepshed Volunteer Centre. Joanne Clarke, our new Volunteering Coordinator, opened the event with an informative speech praising the wonderful work undertaken by our volunteers in a vast and diverse range of tasks. The tasks range from transport, gardening, social and fundraising, befriending, catering, admin and reception, trustees and support for many of the activities which take place daily in JSH. Nicky Morgan, MP, also spoke about the importance of volunteering and took great pleasure in handing out the name badges to JSH volunteers. She said, ‘I am very aware that those who volunteer are often unsung heroes – from serving delicious food to knitting items to be sold in the John Storer House shop to driving minibuses or running line dancing classes there are so many people locally who benefit from the great work done by our volunteers. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who does volunteer and who ensures we have such a thriving community spirit in Loughborough and Shepshed. And also to say thank you to Joanne and Angie and everyone else who supports the volunteers.’ Jill Vincent, Trustee of JSH added, ‘This year our volunteers have stayed with us in a very loyal way in a very difficult re-structuring time so the event was to thank them for their on-going support’. It is planned to hold twice yearly events to continue to thank our volunteers during which new volunteers will be given their badges. SHORTBREAD GOLD MEDAL BISCUITS Everyone's a winner with these easy millionaire shortbread gold medal biscuits. Butter fudge makes a great cheat's caramel. For the base: • 120g/4oz plain flour • 50g/1oz caster sugar • 120g/4oz butter • 50g/1oz semolina For the topping: • • • 24 pieces butter fudge sweets 75g/2oz dark chocolate gold lustre Preheat the oven to 160C/310F/Gas 2 and lightly grease a baking sheet. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Place all the ingredients for the base into a food processor and blend together. Lightly flour a smooth surface, then remove the dough and knead lightly until smooth. Leave to rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. On a lightly-floured surface roll out the dough to a thickness of about 5mm/¼in. Cut out 12 x 6cm/2in rounds and place on the baking sheet. Prick twice with a fork. If you want to string your gold medals, use a drinking straw to make a hole in each biscuit. Bake for approximately 30-40 minutes until golden-brown and firm. Set aside to cool. Once the biscuits have cooled. Soften two pieces of fudge (this can be done by massaging the fudge by hand or warming it in 10 second bursts in a microwave), knead into a ball and roll or pat into a circle the same size as the biscuits. Press onto the surface of the shortbread and leave to set on a tray for 30 minutes. Repeat for the remaining biscuits. Break the chocolate into small pieces and place in a bowl over a pan of gently simmering water (do not let the bowl touch the water). Melt the chocolate, stirring infrequently, until smooth. Leave to cool slightly. Pour the chocolate over the biscuits until they are completely covered. Set aside until the chocolate has set, then brush the chocolate with the gold lustre. In court the lawyer was questioning Farmer Joe, "Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine?" Farmer Joe said, "Well I'll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favourite mule Bessie into the....". "I didn't ask for any details," the lawyer interrupted, "just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!" Farmer Joe said, "I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road...." The lawyer interrupted again, “Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now after the accident he is trying to sue my client and I believe he is a fraud." By this time the Judge was fairly interested in Farmer Joe's answer and said to the lawyer, "I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favourite mule Bessie." Joe thanked the Judge and proceeded, "Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favourite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge truck ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was hurting real bad and didn't want to move. However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes. Then the Patrolman came across the road with his gun in his hand and looked at me. He said, "Your mule was in such bad shape I had to shoot her. How are you feeling?" LETTER TO THE EDITOR ‘I feel compelled to say how absolutely beautiful our gardens are looking on the front and side of John Storer House. All thanks to David Beaumont, a great volunteer, who obviously has a lot of expertise in gardening. Volunteers like David are hard to find and the connection with the House is more extraordinary. David is a great friend of Marion Hull, whose Aunt, Harriet Brooks (remembered on the plaque in the foyer), made a substantial donation to the House many years ago. Part of that donation had to be used for the garden and so it is fitting that all these years later the garden is remembered by someone close to her family. Volunteering is a great way to support the House and again many thanks to David for all his hard work.’ Vivienne Holmes – Volunteer @ JSH Thank you to everyone who has helped us to compile the Newsletter. We welcome your contributions particularly from our JSH Activities; just leave recipes, poems etc. at Reception. Inclusion of articles etc will depend on space available.
