A wide product portfolio includes the Oulton Switched Reluctance Drive, NECO DC & AC Motors, Electropower Gears, Precision Step Systems, DISCO & Supaflex Drives, EDC Traction Motors and Glentronic Phase Converters, The industry standard TR TASC Unit eddy current drive unit is described in this publication. The compact 4200 Controller. VTR TASC UNIT The TR TASC Unit is a frictionfree eddy current coupling which provides infinitely variable torque and speed and is driven by a standard squirrel cage motor which is directly connected to the mains, A simple controller, consisting of a single electronic circuit board, provides closed-loop speed control by comparing the feed-back signal from an inbuilt tachogenerator with the set-speed demand signal. The TR TASC Unit eddy current coupling is, in many respects, the most versatile drive and is available in various forms:- • Variable speed output. 1 Variable torque output. B Infinitely variable load (braking), • Constant output speed with variable input speed. The TASC eddy current coupling has been accepted as the industry standard and it is very doubtful any other drive system is as simple, robust, inexpensive and forgiving of abuse. Although the TR TASC Units described in this publication are mainly used as variable speed drives, units are available which provide the options listed above. CONSTRUCTION AND PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION A torque tube mounted on a hub incorporating a cooling fan, is driven by a motor at constant speed. A polewheel assembly fixed to the output shaft is free to rotate within the torque tube. A d.c. excitation coil, mounted within the polewheel assembly is supplied from the secondary of a rotary transformer mounted on the shaft. The triac output stage of the TR TASC Unit controller supplies the coil with variable voltage and current. A magnetic field is set up in the polewheel TORQUE TUBE MOTOR COIL POLEWHEEL ASSEMBLY ROTARY TRANSFORMER TACHOGENERATOR TYPICAL CONTROL CONFIGURATION SET-POINT CONTROLLER PRESSURE ERROR SENSING RM1002 (MANUAL) 340% TYPICAL TORQUE/SPEED CURVES FOR TASC UNITS UP TO 10.3RW, 2 POLE Starting Torques from 241% to 340% Starting Torques Available: (340% = 100TR2/1) (241% = 132TR2/3) 241% 100% = RATED CONSTANT TORQUE 100% CONTROLLED SPEED RANGE = 45:1 MOTOR SPEED RATED SPEED inducing a voltage, and causing eddy currents to flow in the torque tube. These eddy currents produce their own magnetic field within the torque tube which interacts with the main field and causes the polewheel to rotate in the same direction as the motor. Torque is a function of coil current. Closed-loop speed control is effected by comparing the signal from a tachogenerator driven by the output shaft, with a "set-speed" reference signal. Any error, or difference, between the two signals detected by the speed error sensing circuit, causes the triac output stage to adjust the coil current, and hence torque to maintain set speed. The TR TASC Unit is a heteropolar type which produces higher starting and running torques than earlier homopolar types. Starting torques can be as high as 340% of rated torque as the TR TASC Unit eddy current drive allows the pull-out torque of the driving motor to be utilised during starting. The design of the TR range includes a patented rotary transformer that allows current to reach the main coil, which rotates with the heteropolar polewheel, without the use of brushes and slip-rings, which need regular maintenance. As with previous units, the TR model does NOT include a centrebearing which tends to overheat in service and have a short life. Speed range at constant torque is up to 45:1 and regulation, with built in closed-loop control, is better than 1%. Soft- starting is standard as the motor starts "off-load" and acceleration and deceleration rates are adjustable. TR TASC UNIT FEATURES & BENEFITS : The TR TASC Unit eddy current drive is an extremely versatile constant torque drive which provides outstanding infinitely variable control of torque and speed, Together with its associated compact controller, it combines low prime cost with zero maintenance, reduced energy consumption, negligible RFI and mains harmonics. TR TASC UNIT CONTROLLER The TR TASC Unit speed controller is a single, compact printed circuit card, only 100mm x 160mm which is suitable for the whole range of TR TASC Units irrespective of power rating. It is available suitable for panel or rack mounting, and all customer adjustable controls are factory preset, only requiring fine tuning adjustments if necessary on site. The control circuit is opto-isolated from the mains supply and the controller will accept all common input control signals. TR TASC UNIT FEATURES D High starting torque. (E3-RHS viewed from output shaft, E6-undernsath, E9-LBS). The first two or three numbers indicate the shaft centre-height or frame size, foilowed by the letters TR (transformer, rotary}. The next number gives the number of poles of the motor and, therefore, indicates motor speed: 2 indicates 2-pole (3000 R.P.M. nominal), 4 indicates 4-pole (1500 R.P.M. nominal) etc. The final number indicates the particular model. They generally ascend as the motor power increases. Controller Designation 4200 is the standard panel mounting speed controller for 220/240V supplies. 4200/R is the standard rack mounting speed controller for 220/240V supplies. 4100 is the 110V supply version of the 4200. 4100/R is the 110V supply version of the 4200/R. VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE SYSTEM SELECTION GUIDE Rated Speed The rated speed of a TASC Unit is Its maximum speed at rated load and torque. A small speed difference between motor speed and TASC Unit rated speed exists because, like the squirrel cage motor, the TASC Unit is an induction machine and needs this "slip-speed" to achieve full torque. The data given here is for drives on 50Hz supplies. A similar table is available for 60Hz drives. Bated Torque The rated constant torque of a TASC Unit is set at a level which fully loads its drive motor. It is achieveable over the speed range and, for continuous operation, it must not be exceeded. However, higher torques can be achieved for short-term use such as starting, accelerating and overcoming shock loads. Starting Torques The starting torque stated is that achieved with the TASC Unit at ambient temperature. Values up to 340% of rated torque are achieveable as the motor pull-out torque can be utilised for starting, With the drive at its normal operating temperature, the starting torque is reduced slightly, Maximum Continuous Stall Torque This is the maximum level of stall torque in an ambient temperature of 35"C. If this level of torque is Increased, the Unit will exceed the thermal limit where short-term use only is possible. If this level is above the rated torque, then the rated torque is stated as the limit to avoid overheating the drive motor. Speed Range The thermal speed range stated will not cause overheating of the TASC Unit when it Is operated continuously at rated torque at the stated minimum speed. If the thermal limit of a TASC Unit is greater than the rated torque, the minimum speed is given as zero. The thermal speed range can be increased by decreasing load torque, operating in a lower ambient temperature or increasing the flow of cooling air.
