7006 University of Massachusetts, Integrated Design Building, Amherst, MA Schematic Design - Lighting Design Narrative Overview The lighting for the Integrated Design Building will provide an appealing visual experience using energy-efficient and cost-effective luminaires and controls. The lighting system will use high efficacy, long life, high color rendering linear fluorescent, compact fluorescent and LEDs. The design will endeavor to minimize the variety of lamp types to simplify long-term maintainability. All luminaires will be high-quality, specification-grade equipment by reputable manufacturers and CE/UL/IP-listed for the application. Luminaires will be specified and located for ease of maintainability. LONDON GLASGOW NEW YORK NEW HAVEN SAN FRANCISCO BANGKOK SYDNEY 195 Church Street, 10th Floor New Haven CT 06510 T +1 (203) 777 1400 F +1 (203) 773 1902 newhaven@atelierten.com atelierten.com Typical fluorescent ballasts will be high-efficiency, electronic program-start with normal ballast factor. High and reduced light output ballasts will be used as necessary to provide appropriate lighting with minimal energy load. Dimming ballasts will be specified in spaces with daylightresponsive controls and in rooms with programmable multiscene control systems. Dimming ballasts will be specified to dim to 10% light output or less and will be fully compatible with the dimming control equipment. Daylighted spaces will have daylight-responsive dimming controls to tune the lighting to save energy by reducing electric lighting output in proportion to the available daylight illuminance. In accordance with energy code requirements, all spaces will have some type of occupancy or vacancy sensing controls to automatically turn off lighting in unoccupied areas. Common Review, Conference and Multi-purpose rooms will also have programmable lighting controls to enable the lighting to be operated in pre-set “scenes” to meet requirements for various situations such as video presentations as well as normal conditions. The the following sections describe the lighting design approaches for each of the major space types. Common/Review The lighting for the Commons/Review will be integrated with the architecture layout to provide satisfactory illuminance levels with an emphasis on visual comfort and glare control. General lighting provided by LED downlights coupled with LED wall washers integrated with skylights to illuminate architectural vertical features, operated with daylight-responsive dimming controls. Additional ceiling mounted adjustable LED accents on corridor side to provide satisfactory illuminance levels. The lighting within this area have dimming ballasts and capabilities for further adjustability and control. Library General lighting provided by ceiling-recessed LED or linear fluorescent luminaires coupled with LED wall washers to highlight the focal wall. Local wall switch with occupancy sensor control system will enable the electric lighting to be automatically turned off when the space is vacant. Study tables lighted with table mounted/integrated task lighting with individual personal control and occupancy sensors. Exhibit General lighting provided by ceiling-recessed LED or linear fluorescent luminaires coupled with accent lighting provided by LED luminaires to enhance architectural features. Luminaires controlled automatically by timeclock. Cafe General lighting provided by suspended decorative luminaire coupled with accent lighting provided by LED luminaires to enhance architectural features. Luminaires controlled automatically by timeclock. Procopio General lighting provided by ceiling-recessed LED or linear fluorescent luminaires with adjustable LED accentlights The lighting within this area have dimming ballasts and capabilities for further adjustability and control. Localized wall mounted lighting controls should be provided at room entries as well as at the teaching wall. The control system will enable the electric lighting to respond to occupancy patterns. Classroom General lighting provided by suspended LED or linear fluorescent luminaires with LED wall washers The lighting within this area have dimming ballasts and capabilities for further adjustability and control. Localized wall mounted lighting controls should be provided at room entries as well as at the teaching wall. The control system will enable the electric lighting to respond to occupancy patterns. Green Lab General lighting provided by suspended LED or linear fluorescent luminaires with LED wall washers The lighting within this area have dimming ballasts and capabilities for further adjustability and control. Localized wall mounted lighting controls should be provided at room entries as well as at the teaching wall. The control system will enable the electric lighting to respond to occupancy patterns. 25 April 2014 2/5 Schematic Design Lighting Design Guide Criteria Matrix 195 Church Street, Suite 10C Project: University of Massachusetts, Integrated Design Building, Amherst, MA Architect: Leers Weinzapfel | Boston, MA New Haven, CT 06510 (203) 777 - 1400 General Notes and Instructions: 1. This document reflects Atelier Ten's current understanding of the spaces lighting design guidance. 2. Programmatic, task, or architectural changes will affect the validity of this document and so it is accurate only insofar as the current space programming and design. 3. Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) recommended illuminances, in units of footcandles [fc], are used where applicable. 4. Illuminance targets are used as a reference in design. These values may represent an average, minimum, or values for specific critical points. 5.
