Invitation
Dear colleagues and friends,
It is our great honor to invite you to the 20th World Congress of the International Federation of
Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies (IFOS), which will be held from June 1 to 5, 2013 at the
COEX Convention and Exhibition Center in Seoul, Korea.
Under the active guide of the IFOS Program Advisory Committee, the comprehensive scientific program
will follow the successful blueprint used in past IFOS World Congresses, while incorporating innovative
new elements to provide a lively and compelling educational experience.
For those seeking to expand their knowledge of the field and learn about the most up-to-date
advancements and discoveries, the IFOS Seoul 2013 cannot be missed. The Congress will also include
special social and tour programs which will give you and your family a chance to experience our unique
Asian culture and explore the beautiful and historic city of Seoul in addition to other parts of Korea.
Finally, a world-class exhibition will take place in COEX’s premier facilities where exhibitors from around
the world will be able to display their new ENT products and services for all IFOS delegates. With
tremendous support from the Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
(KORL) and the Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngologic Clinician (KOSOC), the organizing
committee promises to deliver a dynamic and unmatched experience for all participants.
It is our sincerest hope that, as in past Congresses, IFOS Seoul 2013 will bring all of us together to
share in the common goal of advancing and developing the field of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck
Surgery.
Sincerely yours,
Chong Sun Kim

Welcome Messages
Dear friends,
It is with great pleasure that I write to you, on behalf of the International Federation of OtoRhino-Laryngological Societies (IFOS), about the upcoming 20th World Congress which will be
held from June 1 to 5, 2013 in Seoul, Korea.
There have been many recent exciting developments in the science of otorhinolaryngology and
in patient care which we plan to examine and discuss at this crucial meeting. At our previous
congresses, ENT professionals around the globe have enjoyed a stimulating scientific and
social program. At this congress, we will take a critical look at new and existing clinical
treatments.
The scientific program is designed to meet the aim of the 20th IFOS World Congress which is
“Innovation and Integration in ORL-HNS”; it will consist of special and keynote lectures, round
table and panel discussions, symposia, instructional courses and free paper sessions such as
oral, e-poster and video presentations.
This 20th congress in the series should yet again prove to be an important milestone for clinical
scientists and practicing health care workers from all disciplines of otorhinolaryngology.
Together, we will further the management and treatment of patients and advance the field of
otorhinolaryngology.
I really look forward to welcoming you to historic Seoul and to a very successful congress.
Paulo Pontes
President, IFOS
Greetings!
Back in 2009 in Sao Paulo, the International Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies
(IFOS) General Assembly chose Seoul and the Korean Society of ORL-HNS to organize the
World Congress in 2013. Their preparations have shown that this was an excellent decision.
The organizing committee, under the presidency of Chong Sun Kim, has already done a
tremendous job preparing every detail of the biggest ORL event.
Over 300 sessions covering nearly every aspect of ORL-HNS have been planned, with
participation from over 1,000 international faculty members.
The World Congress is also a great chance to meet colleagues from every corner of the world,
to share clinical experiences and developments and to enjoy the unique culture, cuisine and
atmosphere of Korea.
It is a pleasure for me as General Secretary of IFOS to invite all of you to come to Seoul and
participate in the world’s largest ORL event to increase its scientific and social value.
I hope to see you all in Seoul.
Milan Profant
General Secretary, IFOS

Half Day Programs
Half Day Tours include : Bus Transportation, English Speaking Guide, Admission Fees / Minimum Persons : 10
HT-1 Royal Relics Morning Tour [ Gyeongbokgung, National Folk Museum, Jogyesa ]
This history-themed tour takes participants first to Gyeongbokgung (Palace), the grandest and
most comprehensive of the five palaces of the Joseon Dynasty. First constructed in 1394 and
reconstructed in 1867, the name Gyeongbokgung translates in English as “Palace Greatly
Blessed by Heaven”. Participants will also have a chance to visit the National Folk Museum
inside of the palace and will then visit Jogyesa (Temple), home to the administrative
headquarters of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
HT-2 World Cultural Heritage Tour I [ Changdeokgung, Jongmyo Shrine, Insadong ]
Changdeokgung (Palace) is one of the "Five Grand Palaces" built by the kings of the Joseon
Dynasty. Changdeokgung, which literally means "Palace of Prospering Virtue", was the most
favored palace of many princes of the Joseon Dynasty and retained many elements dating from
the Three Kingdoms of Korea period that were not incorporated in the more contemporary
Gyeongbokgung. Jongmyo Shrine was built by Lee Seong Gye, the first king and founding
father of the Joseon Dynasty. It was a primary place of worship for kings throughout the Joseon
Dynasty and is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site for its well-preserved
ancient customs such as memorial services and traditional music.
HT-3 Art & Culture Tour [ Namsangol Hanok Village, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art ]
Once you enter Namsangol Hanok Village, you will see five restored traditional Korean houses
belonging to members of various social classes, ranking from peasants to the king. The
furniture in each house is situated to help guests understand the daily life of the past and
visitors can try some traditional games on the ground. Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art,
exhibits traditional and modern works of art by Korean and international artists. The museum
itself is just as fascinating as the works of art on display, since its three buildings were designed
by the internationally renowned architects, Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel and Rem Koolhaas.
HT-4 Cultural Experience Tour I [ Experience a Traditional Tea Ceremony, Try on Hanbok (Traditional Korean
Costume) & Manners Lesson, Folk Drawing on a Woodblock Print, Buchimgae Cooking (Korean Pancake) ]
For a long time in Korea, tea has been used to provide not just refreshment but also to dispel
muddled thoughts and induce self-discipline for those that were studying or meditating.
Participants will learn the etiquette of drinking tea through a traditional tea ceremony wearing
Hanbok (Traditional Korean Costume). Folk paintings are comprised of "functional" pictures
widely used by commoners during the late Joseon Dynasty to decorate their homes or to
express their wishes for a long, happy life.

result, the town’s concept was expanded to include all forms of cultural art.
FT-2 Old Historical Tour [ Gyeongbokgung, National Folk Museum, Jogyesa, Icheon Ceramics Village ]
Icheon Ceramics Village produces traditional Korean ceramics which are of high quality. The
village became the center of traditional pottery during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) for about
500 years due to the easily obtainable materials in the areas. Icheon Ceramics Village was also
the center of Joseon Baekja ceramics. Presently, about 80 pottery factories are congregated at

process, and purchase them directly. It is worthwhile to see the crafts of these potters known as
Living Cultural Treasures of Korea for creating the highest quality handicrafts.

contains a rich heritage of sights and remains from that period. The city spends a great deal of

About Seoul
Visitors to Seoul are often struck by the city’s incredibly diverse atmosphere and multi-faceted profile.
Evidence of Korea’s fabled economic development and technological initiative abounds, yet Seoul’s illustrious
history, dating back to the founding of the Joseon Dynasty in 1392, has hardly been ignored. Grand imperial
palaces and serene temples have been meticulously preserved amongst the towering skyscrapers and busy
urban sprawl that have come to be associated with modern Seoul. Recently, the city has been making a solid
push to re-establish its natural beauty and environmentally friendly side. In addition to the lush forests and
mountains which encircle Seoul, successful projects to landscape and restore the Cheongyecheon (Stream)
and Hangang (River) banks have provided a wonderful refuge from the pressures of urban life.
