Electrical Engineering
Electrical engineers deal with the behaviors of electric charges, electric and
magnetic phenomena, and things energized by electricity. Some of the fields they
work in are robotics, computer hardware, nanotechnology, communications, and
energy and power distribution.
Degree Program
Research
The Bachelor of Science in Electrical
Engineering is the baseline degree
that permits a graduate to practice the
profession of Electrical Engineering. The
bachelor of science program is designed
to be completed in four years, including
three semesters of cooperative education
interspersed.
Faculty, students, and staff are actively involved
in exciting research leading to the discovery
of new instruments and systems. Some of
the research in the Electrical Engineering
Department includes focus on power systems,
medical imaging, robotics, alternative energy
sources, and more.
Students will take courses like data structure,
integrated circuit design, microelectronics
design and fabrication, pattern recognition
and machine intelligence, communication
system design, and more.
Engineering Living Learning
Community
A Master of Engineering in Electrical
Engineering is also offered. The program
can be completed in one year (3 semesters).
Cooperative Education
Through Speed School’s required
Cooperative Education Program, engineering
students combine classroom knowledge
with technical work experience in business.
They work full time under an engineering
supervisor for three alternating semesters the equivalent of one year. Students discover
the demands of the engineering profession,
as well as their interest and abilities, early in
their academic program. Also, their co-op
earnings can help defray college expenses.
Almost one-third of Speed graduates
accept employment offers from their co-op
employers.
Students who participate in the Engineering
Living Learning Community (LLC) all live
in Community Park, a suite-style resident
hall. The community helps students explore
an engineering career through courses,
programming, services, and connections to
campus and community resources.
Students must apply for the LLC and a limited
number of spots are available. For more
information visit louisville.edu/housing.
