תשרי לשנה טובה תכתבו From the Desk of the Rav OPTIMISM IN JUDGMENT Rosh Hashannah, the "Day of Judgment”, has arrived! We all recognize the fact that we have a great task and responsibility, during the coming days of the Aseret Yemei Teshuva - The Days of Repentance - to do our best in reconnecting to our source. Yet we must do it with happiness and optimism. The Midrash notes that when the nations of the world are judged, they wear black. But the Jewish nation, when they stand in judgment before the Creator, they wear white, as a sign of faith and confidence that our Heavenly Father, in his abundant mercy, will bless us with a good year. As we turn to the Almighty in prayer, it is important to be mindful of a few things. First, Hashem desires our prayers. Even if we feel inadequate - or perhaps especially because of that feeling- the Merciful one wants to hear our voices. Second, Let us pray for the welfare of our people. Communal prayer is more than just getting together for the service. It is to be concerned for the other, and to Daven for their needs, as we Daven for our own. During our prayers, all of us should have in mind the security of our brothers and sisters in Eretz Yisrael, and we should beseech Hashem to grant ample wisdom to its leaders. And last but not least; we should all celebrate our values and tradition with pride and confidence. The blast of the Shofar is an act of coronation for the King of all Kings. Let us be grateful for the privilege of being part of this ceremony. Miriam, the children and I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Kehillah a Shana Tova. May we all merit a year of physical and spiritual blessing and growth. On a Scriptural level only the first day has a Yom Tov status. Consequently one should not cook or prepare food until after dark on Monday October 14. <<>> Our rabbis tell us that it is better to say few Selichot with Kavanah (mindset) than many without. Thus on Erev Rosh Hashannah we will not be saying all of the Selichot printed but rather the ones listed below. The list is known as Minhag Telz -the ones that are said in the Telz Yeshiva. The purpose is not to save time but rather to have a better chance to be mindful of what we are asking from Hashem. May The Almighty grant all a year of health happiness and meaning. The word " "נִצ ִ ִָּ֤ביםmeans "to stand". The lesson to be learned from this Paresha is that there are times in life when we have to stand firm and times when we have to go or act. Different situations confront us in life. How we handle them makes all the difference in defining what kind of a person we are and how we portray ourselves to others. When there is a matter of principle involved, we should have enough fortitude to stand up for what we believe even if it means we will be standing alone. When something has to be done and no one takes the initiative, we should have the strength to get up and go and do it ourselves and serve as an example for others. Pareshat Nitzavim is read every year before Rosh Hashannah. Tosofot at the end of Megillah (31b) tells us that the reason is to separate the Tochacha that we read in last week’s Paresha from the New Year. There may be another reason. As we approach the New Year we are told "... א ֶַּ֨תם "נִצ ִ ִָּ֤בים הַּיֹום, “you are standing today”, (Devarim 29:9). If we stand firm today with our beliefs, when we are about to start a new year, then we will be able to say we stand before Hashem, as His people, united in desirable actions, mitzvot, prayer, and kavanah, so that we "may enter the covenant of the Lord, your G-d, and His oath, which the Lord, your G-d, is making with you this day", (Devarim 29:11). May our Kehillah be zocheh to celebrate the Yamim Noraim as “ish echad b’lev echad”, (“as one individual dedicated to the same purpose”), so that our tefilot are heard by Hashem and we are all granted his loving mercy and inscribed in the Book of Life. Members and guests are reminded that according to Halacha, talking is forbidden during the following times: Between Baruch Sheamar and the conclusion of Chazarat Hashatz; During the recitation of Kaddish, both by mourners, and/or, by the Shaliach Tzibur; On Rosh Hashannah between reciting the Berachot for the Shofar, (page 436, Art Scroll), until the conclusion of the Shofar blasts at the end of Musaf, (page 585, Art Scroll). Those interested in engaging in conversations during these times are asked to please step outside the Main Sanctuary, so that those who wish to stand before Hashem in prayer can do so. !כתִ יבָה ו ַחֲ תִ ימָ ה טֹובָה Book Discussion We are pleased to announce that Rabbi Milevsky will be leading a discussion on this interesting and controversial book: Ally: My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide by Michael B.
